Sharpening Question

Sharpening is my ultimate nemesis. I browsed through the memories and couldn't find anything that answered my question. I prefer my bases to be clear and sharp, without being overly sharp. I have recently found a love for icons that are from a wider perspective, but sharpening them is very tricky. *points to icon*
Does anyone have any good tips for sharpening? Why does "unsharp mask" hate me so much, and how do I properly use it? I use PS7.
