Tutorial (light textures etc)

Assumes that you know how to use layers in PSP7. :)

We're going to make this icon:

I ask that you don't try and make an exact duplicate, but I would like to see whatever you do come up with. :)

Okay, we'll start with this picture of Chris Eccleston as Doctor Who (said picture comes from here):)

And now we resize it and sharpen it twice (go to effects, then sharpen -but I'm assuming you knew that).

Now to get it down to 100x100...I do this by just going to 'new' and making a new 100x100 image which is just plain white, then pasting the image into that, positioning it as I like. I know there's a better way, but I don't know it. ;) Anyway, I got this-

Leaving a white bit on the right, just because I do that for some reason. Anyway, now to brighten it up a bit- merge layers, then go to duplicate, then go to layer properties, and select Screen. Leave it at about 100. Then, merge the layers and sharpen. :)

Okay, now paste on a texture. Well, I call it a texture-really it's just a bit I cropped from a stock image. :)

Set it to darken, 100-

Then erase some bits, so you can see his face-

Okay, now we get another picture. This one, to be exact. :)

Move it to the right place (wherever that is) and set it to Lighten, 68

And now erase all the awkward blobs on the side, and stick on some text. It's News Gothic MT, for those who want to know-

And now erase the rest of the blobs, which I ought to have done before but didn't, so hopefully you'll ignore that- ;)

And now the rest of the text-

And now one of my favourite textures- this one, made by me from a stock image a while ago-

Add that as a new layer, and position it wherever you like-

And now, set it to Lighten, 100.

Erase the little bit that goes over the text, and maybe then set the eraser to a low opacity and erase over the star, as well, just so it doesn't stand out as much-

Okay! Now merge the layers, and duplicate again. This time set the properties to Screen, 64-

Now do exactly the same thing, except this time setting it to Soft Light, 100...and you've done it! Well done. ;)

(p.s.-Don't forget to tune in next Saturday for the Dalek episode. ;) )
