recoloring textures?

Is there a way to recolor textures in Photoshop? Like these kinds of textures? I see so many really neat-looking ones, but none of them are really in color combinations I'd use. I've tried using gradients and color fills set at Hue or Color, but Hue just makes them glaringly bright and obnoxious and Color makes it so dull you can barely tell any color is there. Is there a different setting I could try that would work nicely?
