problems with stroke in psp8

I've tried using stroke width in psp8. Something is going wrong: I'm either not understanding what it's used for or I'm messing it up.

Everytime I try to use it it's making my text splotchy, so much so that the text cannot even be read.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
