New Tutorial - PS7

In this tutorial we'll be making this icon:

using PS7. The tutorial is fairly image-intensive, but it's pretty straightforward. :) x-posted to wolenczaklabs

Okay, first we start with a screencap of the lovely Jonathan Brandis as Lucas Wolenczak. The cap is from the episode "Second Chances", and I have no idea where I got it from.

First, crop the pic so you have a 100x100 square. I use the 'crop' tool, but whatever works is fine. We get something like this:

It's a little dark, but we can fix that. Duplicate the layer, and set it to 'screen' at 100% opacity. Go back down to the bottom layer and desaturate it:

Go back up to the screened layer and go to filters -> blur -> gaussian blur, with the setting at .8 or so.

Now duplicate the screened layer, and set it to 'soft light' at 100% opacity. Go to filters -> texture -> grain, set the intensity and contrast to low numbers - 6 or 7 works, and where it says 'grain type', choose 'horizontal'.

Make a new layer above that soft light layer, and fill it with a dark blue. Yes, it's the ever-popular exclusion layer! Set it to 'exclusion' at 61% opacity.

We end up with this:

Make a new layer, and fill it with a tannish color. Set it to 'hue' at 43% opacity.

New layer! Fill it with black, set to 'color' at 16% opacity.

New layer, and now take a textury brush - the ones I use on this icon are from annikavonholdt.com - and apply it to the icon in a light color from the icon itself. Erase all the bits that cover the lovely ensign's face. Set to 'lighten' at 100% opacity.

Another new layer, and another brush. This one in a darker color from the icon. Leave the settings at normal and 100%. Again, erase anything covering his face.

One more new brush layer, and one more brush. Use a light color, normal settings, and once again erase what's covering his face.

Now for text! I used a lyric from the song "Headstrong": This is not where I belong. The font is Addict, size 7, set to 'strong', in black. Go to 'blend options'.

Choose 'drop shadow.' Set the blend mode to 'linear dodge', color white (or cream), opacity 75%, with distance, spread, and size all set at 1.

Next, choose 'outer glow' and leave the settings as they are.

And there you have it. Ensign Lucas Wolenczak, a la The Ring, or something.
