it'll only take a moment, so stop your graoning & moaning. ;)

i'm kidding about the class thing. i'm probably younger than a lot of you~~~ ;x
first tutorial. i hope it helps, somewhat.

but~~~

STEP ONE: the base!

it's mizuki~! <333

take the initial picture and crop it to 100x100 pixels. or whatever dimesnion you want. just get it to whatever your making. the base right now looks kind of bland, right? it does to me, at least, so we get to the fun part and touch it up with all these snazzy things! with that said and done,

DUPLICATE

the base layer and head onto step TWO.

...

STEP TWO: the fill

sharpen it, if needed. if it looks fine on its own, don't. if it's too sharpened, you can always go to EDIT>FADE SHARPEN, or CTRL+SHFT+F. and now set it to OVERLAY. you can adjust its opacity, but we can do that later.

...

STEP THREE: the effects

now! we do more. go to; IMAGE>ADJUSTMENT>HUE/SATURATION. i set the saturation at about -49. adjust it until you are satisfied with the colour; not to grey but not too much colour. and then, we go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENT>CHANNEL MIXER and click on monochrome. you can adjust the RGB if you want.

this is what i did:

R: +70
G: -14
B: +14

...

STEP FOUR: the colours

this is basically finished, without all the text and all.
set a new layer and fill it with a beigey colour. i chose D6CAAE.
set it to COLOR, and adjust the opacity if needed. i made mine to 41%

after apply the monochrome & different saturation level, you can adjust the overlay opacity better. this is what i did, at least. ;x

...

STEP FIVE: extras!

add text and brushes as you will. experiment with their qualities (i.e. between different layers, their fills, etc.) all i did was make a white rectangle and a black line, with the help from different brushes. flipped it 180º and added a brush at the bottom corner, by INSOMNIAC BRUSHES.

and...

END LESSON.
you can go home now.
