colored pencil look (PSP9)
How to make a sketch looking icon without using the horrible colored pencil effect. So basically we are going from
to 
1. start off with your base all nice and cropped, resized, and sharpened. I have a picture of Anna Pavlova from comaneci-salto.com.
2. then we are going to duplicate that layer, desaturate it, and leave the settings at Normal 100% opacity
3. next, duplicate the DESATURATED layer. I don't know if there is something similar to this in PS, but for PSP9 (and probably 8) go to Effects > Edge Effects > Find All. Set this layer to Hard Light and lower the opacity so some of the layer behind it shows through. I set the opacity on this icon to 72%. So now we have this:
4. to finish it off, drag the base layer to the top (the colored one), and set the layer to Color at 100% opacity. You should now have this:
yay. Now you can add whatever brushes/text/borders you want. I know this isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but it's something different =P
