Transparency & Saving

Searched through the memories a bit but didn't see exactly what I needed. Simple question, how do I save an icon w/ transparency w/out my edges being very sharp? I tried saving as a .gif and the edges are always ragged. I tried doing 'save for web' but it came up with a wierd white border around it(although it was transparent otherwise). (using PS CS btw)
