Tutorial: Scan me

Today, we're going to be making this icon;

This tutorial is translated for psp and animation shop.

We'll be using this image of Ville Valo as the base;

Step 1: Crop and resize

Now the base is 100x100. woot! :)

Hmm, the image is kinda fuzzy now isn't it? Sharpen it.

Step 2: Duplicate and erase
Duplicate your base, and erase your background with the background eraser.

We want to make it a clean erase so switch to the regular eraser and get rid of the stray spots.

Step 3: Preparing for the scan

We'll be using this picture as the image that scans;

Step 3a: Getting it to fit.
Since the scan's going to be on the side of the base, we're going to need to make it so we have most of te picture in that spot. Crop the image so it's in a rectangular shape and have the HEIGHT 100;

Now, place this image as a new layer in the base with the erased background. Have the base on top of this new layer;

Good, now it fits.

Step 3b: Cutting the image up.
This is easier when you have the ruler and guide option on. So if you dont have it enabled, do so now. It should look something like this;

We're going to cut up our second image into 10 peices. With the crop tool, make a rectangle the size of the top rectangle. Crop it and place it into the base that DOES NOT have the erased background;

Go back to your newly cropped image, Undo the crop (Ctrl + Z) and move the cropping box to the next rectangle. Repeat this until you have all 10 of the peices peiced together on your base image;

Group the peices together;

Now copy and paste the base with the erased background as a new layer on the icon. Make sure it's on top of the group layer and NOT in the group.

Step 4: Borders and junk.
The icon looks kinda weird without a border, so lets add that.
Create a new layer and name it border. We'll be using this brush i made as the border.

Fix the opacity and the icon should look like this now;

Add your text and all that other good stuff you want.

Step 5: Let's get to the scanning.
Open up your animation shop if it's not already open. We don't want the completed picture to be shown yet so click on the eye ball for the layer named "group".

Your icon'll look like this;

Copy the merged picture and paste it as a new animation.

Unclick the eye and from layer 3down, click on the eye so they're not visible. The most imporant numbers right now is 25, 75, 100, and 50. That's the numbers we're going to be changing the opacity to.

On the first layter of the group (raster 2), move the opacity to 25, copy merged and paste as the second frame in your new animation. Go back to the image in psp and move the opacity to 75, paste as the 3rd layer in the animation and return to psp. In psp, move the opacity to 100 and the layer underneath it (Raster 3) to opacity 25 after you unclick the eye. copy paste into the animation. Go back to psp change the opacity for Raster 2 to 50 and move Raster 3 to 75. In PSP. Change Raster 3 too 100 Opacity and click on the eye for Raster 2.

Your first 4 frames should look like this;

Continue doing that until you've x'd out all of the layers inside the group. You should have about 22 frames. I only have 19 because the base without the background covers up the bottom of the image that scans, so I don't really need to change the opacity on the things you can't see.

In animation shop, select all the frames and change the duration so it doesn't scan that fast.

Woo, and that's it, we made a scanning icon.

Finished product;
