VLC for mac is making me pull out my hair

I recently updated VLC to version 2.0.5. Since then, I'm unable to screencap DVDs. I followed this tutorial, but I can't get any screen caps.

Specifically what happens is, I'll set everything up to screen cap; load the disc (without menus, inputting specific titles/chapters), hit play and then...absolutely friggin nothing happens. Wait no, what does happen is the stupid program freezes on me.

I've even attempted to re-download older versions (after uninstalling, of course) but VLC just keeps freezing/crashing on me.

Rats...it appears to be the disc itself. Any idea why that would happen? Or maybe recs for a better screencap program? I'm running OS 10.6
