Photoshop Help

Kind of a weird question but using photoshop, is there a way to save something as a template? Example: I make at a few graphics communities and I offer icons. I would like to know if there is a way that I can save an icon, exit PS and come back later and edit it with different text, colors..etc etc or do I have to start all over again? I hope this makes sense :/
