Problems pasting textures

So I recently switched from CS to CS3 (using Windows), and just noticed a problem I hadn't bumped into with CS. When I was ready to apply a texture, I tried to do as I always do - new layer, paste texture, fiddle with opacity and whatnot. But for some reason the texture would not paste; I also tried removing the new layer and just pasting it straight on the background, but no avail. It was only the second time I used CS3, so I haven't changed any settings or whatnot.

Have I accidentally messed up some settings or do things work completely differently in CS3 or what? *cries*
