a tutorial
Warnings: Sorry for my bad english! There might be some errors, I apologize in advance! Also, you may think this is easy as hell because I'm just a beginner with a lot of time to waste (both for making icons and for making the tutorial), but I hope you find this quite useful anyway ^-^
I'm using Photoshop CS3,but I guess the utilities are the same for other programs.

How to get from this
to this
in few easy steps :)
Program: Photoshop CS3
PSD: if desired
Difficulty: easy-average
1) Crop the chosen image in a 100x100 px square, of course XD
(NOTE: it’s better if there’s a white background behind the subject of the image, but you can easily -and patiently- erase or paint it white once it’s cropped.)

2) Find a texture with one of those spiral notebooks and the square aligning [or how the hell they’re called : / ], eventually crop it to 100x100 px, and rotate it where you want the spiral to be.
(NOTE: I also modified the contrast of the spiral part using the Burn tool a couple of times, but it’s not fundamental if you like how it already looks like.)

3) Paste it in your image and put it under the background layer, eventually unlocking the latter.
4) After you’ve selected the main image layer, use the magic wand to select the white background and press the Canc button to clear it. You should get this:

5) Find a dark and decorated texture, put it between the two layers and set it on Difference 100%. I chose this one:
=>
=>
(NOTE: I think you can see that the dotted line is on the other side: I wasn’t satisfied with the way it looked because the flowery decoration was mostly hidden by the person, so I flipped the layer going to Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal.)
6) Find a dark texture with colored and light parts, like this one I chose, and put it above all the layers, setting it on Screen 100% (again, I rotated it to show the lighter part on the body).
=>
7) Flatten the image and you’re done! If you think it looks a bit empty you can add more elements, text, whatever. Here is a variation:

I simply made a new layer, wrote his last name and duplicated the layer to make it a bit more bold (I’m using the tablet, btw, so your hand should be even more firm with a mouse ^^).
