Newbie To The Community With A Question

I have a question. I have been sitting here reading through the memories on transparency but they don't really seem to be answering my question. I use paint shop pro 9 (was the only avalible free trial).

Every time that I try to save something with a transparent background (recently I have been trying to learn to make blinkies), I usually save images from PSP 9 as jpegs, the background doesn't save transparent. Whenever I reopen the image the background is pure white. Why does it save white?!

While reading the tutorials I saw someone mention that you have to change the palette transparency. I not sure exactly what that means BUT under "view" and then "docking options" I found something about transparency and everything is set fine for transparency. It is set that so if it's transparent it shows up a faint grey color. So as I continue to read the tutorials I am finding out that transparency only save right as .gif well I am trying that and I am still not getting my image background when I open it to show me that it is transparent by being a faint grey instead of pure white.

I guess I am just not understanding the tutorials or something. But if you have patience could someone please help me to understand how to make backgrounds transparent for blinkie use, as well as how to save them so that when they are re-opened the background is transparent and not white?

I am not new to making graphics or anything but I've always have a problem with doing transparency.

Thank you so much in advanced. I am very happy that my friend told me about this community, I can tell already that it is going to be a great help to improve my graphics making.
