Opacity and Fill

I searched through the memories and couldn't really find anything to help me, but I was wondering what is the difference between the opacity thing and the fill thing? I was making an icon once and messed with both of them and both seemed to give the same effect. Obviously there must be a difference otherwise only one would be needed. So, I was just wondering what the difference was. Thank you very much.
