01. I started with a white background, then added this texture.

You do not need to do anything to this texture, just leave it at the normal setting.

02. Now, start with your base. Instead of removing all of the background space behind them, simply use the smudge tool (shown here) to smudge the background to fill in the rest of the icon space. Make sure you go to the tool bar at the top of Photoshop, and change the strength level to 25%.

It should look something like this,

It is okay with you smudge a bit of the heads, it helps them blend into the background.

03. Now that your background is all filled in, set the image to Soft Light at 100%, then duplicate it and set it to Soft Light at 40%.

04. Now, add a selective colour layer, with these settings:
Red
Cyan: -30
Yellow: +22

Yellow
Cyan: -7
Yellow: +7

Neutrals
Yellow: -11

Use your judgement on this. Depending on the image you used it could turn out to look a lot different than mine did. Basically, in this step adjust the colouring to your preference/style, or to best match your icon.

05. Now add this texture by jonahday to give it a more red-ish light.
and set it to Soft Light at 88%

06. Then add this texture by thisbrightcity to brighten up Ryan and Marissa.
and set it to Soft Light at 31%

07. At this point, the icon is just a little too red for my liking, so instead of removing the previous textures, add a color fill layer with white (#FFFFFF). You can either to go Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid color, or you can hit CTRL + SHIFT + N to add a new transparent layer, then use the paint bucket tool (shown on the left) and fill the transparent layer with white, either one works. Then, set the new white layer to Soft Light at 53%.

Now, we are basically done, however if you'd like to add a text texture, continue on to the last step.
08. This step is optional, but I added this texture by ?
and screened it above their heads.

And viola! You're finished.

Tutorial #04 | Britney Spears
*Its not the same exact icon I made, but its very similar.

01. Start with this texture by selinna as a background. Do not do anything to it.

02. Then add your base. In my opinion, its easiest to pick a background with a solid color, however since we will be "erasing" the background for this tutorial, it doesn't really matter that much. So, start with your base and crop it to your liking. Since I wanted her to not take up the entire icon, I cropped the icon beyond the image size.

example:

03. This is a important and lengthy step, so make sure you follow the instructions carefully.
Now, add a layer mask to remove the white background. The masking tool (shown here), simply "erases" the space around the image without ruining/changing anything about the actual image. When you click on the masking tool, a white box will appear next to your image in your layers tab, before you do anything to your image make sure that white box is selected, or else this will not work.

Then, go to the tool bar at the top of Photoshop, and make sure the opacity of the actual brush is set to some value LESS THAN 40%. About 40 is good, but no less than that. I also recommend using a soft circular brush to remove the background, no larger than 30 px.

Now, before you begin "erasing", make sure on the tool bar that your foreground color is black, and that your background color is white (shown here).

Now you may begin "erasing" the background. If you mess up and accidently remove part of your image, no worries, just click the double-headed arrow next to your color palette, and it will change your foreground color to white, and background color to black. Then you can go over the area of your image that you accidently erase, and it will appear again.

Take your time on this step, the more effort your put in to it, the better your results will be.

It should turn out, something like this,

04. Alright, now duplicate your image twice, set the first duplicated image to Soft Light at 100%, and the second duplicated image to Soft Light at 36% to lighten her up, and bring out the natural color of the image.

05. Add this texture, by daintydeers to brighten up the image a little more, and give a light pink tint.
and set it to Soft Light at 100%

06. Then add this texture by thisbrightcity
and set ito to Color Burn at 25%.

06. Now, add this texture by ??
and set it to Color Burn at 27%

07. Then I created a new transparent layer (CTRL + SHIFT + N), and filled it with black. (#000000). Then, I used a soft white brush to make white circular shape in the middle of the black fill layer.

like this,

You can use this one if you'd like, otherwise this is a really simple texture to make. Then I set the black and white texture to Screen at 20% to lighten the image a little more.

And now you're done! Like I said, this isn't the exact icon I made, but it is very similar to the one I did make previously. If you want to use that icon, please make sure you credit me.
