3D Effect

beetle_breath requested a tutorial on making a 3D looking image.

Program: Photoshop 7
Translatable: Probably
Difficulty: Fairly Simple (I hope)

Okay. So I first grabbed the picture I wanted to use. In this case, I used this adorable picture of Kim Jonghyun.

I desaturated the image. You can do this by going to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. This will make your picture black and white. This isn’t they way I normally like to make pictures black and white. As you can see, the image doesn’t really look that good. But, for this tutorial, this will be fine.

Okay. Now I duplicated the image twice. You can do this by right clicking on your picture in the Layers palette. This is what your Layers palette looks like:

So now I have by base and 2 copies of it. Now you are going to make 2 color fill layers. Click on your second base copy. Go to Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color. A window will pop up. Click OK. Now another window will come up. You want to put #00ffff for the cyan color. This is what it’ll look like:

Then click ok. Now, set this layer to Lighten. You can do this by going to the drop down bar on the Layers palette. Now, click on your third (top) base layer. Repeat the steps from above to get another fill layer. This time you’ll want to use #ff0000 for the red color. Set this layer to Multiply.

This is what your Layers palette should look like:

Okay. Now you are going to link the blue layer to the second base copy. To do this, simply click on the empty box next to the eye. Make sure to click the second base copy first. Then link them together. Do this for the red layer and the third base copy as well. This is what two linked images looks like:

Okay. Now that you have your images linked, go to Layer>Merge Linked. Do this for both base copies and color layers. After you do that, this is what your Layers palette will look like:

And your actual picture will look like this:

Now, you want to set the red layer to Lighten and the blue layer to Multiply. After doing this, your image will basically look like the desaturated image:

Okay. Now all you have to do is move the red layer a little bit to the right and the blue image a little bit to the left, or until you get what you want. This is what you will get:

Now. I didn’t really like how it looked. So I duplicated the black and white base a set it to Multiply. I kept it at 100% but I thought it was way to dark. My stupid photoshop sucks and makes lines all over my picture when I try to lower the opacity of a Multiply layer. So I duplicated the Mulitply layer and set it to Screen 42%. You can just lower the opacity of your Mulitply layer.

Next I added a Brightness/Contrast layer, just to spruce things up. I set mine to -8 and 20.

This is what I ended up with:

And that’s pretty much it. You can keep your picture in color if you want. This is what it would look like:

So, I’m not really good at explaining things. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to ask! And I’d love to see what you come up with!

Please direct all questions and comments to my lj post here so that I can see them!
