purple coloring
This was done in PSP9 but can easily be translated to other versions of PSP, PS, and most likely gimp.
We are going from this:
to this:
Okay first with your base. It probably works best if most of the icon is a picture is of a face (not a lot of background stuff).

1. desaturate the base (adjust > hue and saturation > hue/saturation/lightness > set saturation to -100) and lighten it a bit, but not so much that it's washed out. It'll look something like this:

2. create a new layer (layers > new raster layer) set to Exclusion at 100%. Flood fill with a medium-dark blue (I used #0a1e60)

3. create another new layer set to Color at 64%. Flood fill with a light tanish brown color (#d6cebe)

4. create another new layer (this is the last one, I swear) set to burn at 100%. Flood fill with a VERY LIGHT purple color (#dcb2ee)

and now you're done. I tried to make it really basic so beginners could use it as well. Play around with the color shades and opacities to your liking. Hopefully it was useful to someone...
