Tutorial: Smoke effect

Hey guys! So I got asked by dark_angel869 how I did the smoking technique that i used in this icon:

so i obliged at made a tutorial for it last night. This is my first so be nice! ^_^ also, if i missed a step or something does not pan out right, lemme know and i'll fix it! It is a fairly easy technique I came up with but i tried to be as detailed as possible for any beginners out there. I use Photoshop 7.0 and ImageReady 7.0, but it should be translatible (i hope). ^^;; Today we will be making this icon:

Smoking tutorial

Okay, so we are starting with this icon...well i guess you can call it a base. i just made it real quick.

1. Add a new layer and switch to the pencil tool, make sure the color is set to white, and draw a tendril like this:

2. Then I went to filter>>blur>>gaussian blur and set it to 3.8 pixels (you can use this to your own discretion. my tendril now looks like this:

3. Create a new later and use the pencil tool, still at white, and draw another tendril over it in a different direction like this:

4. Then gaussian blur it to the same settings (ctrl+F). Repeat step 3 one more time (you can do it as many times as you want, but i usually only need three. Also, if you need to, click on the eye next to old layers to make that tendril disappear for a time so you can make the tendrils easier.)
This is what we have so far:

5. Now go into ImageReady (file>>jump to>>Adobe ImageReady 7.0 [shift+ctrl+m]) and duplicate the image three times. To make this easier, I have added in what each frame would look like by scrn shots for each one. so click on the link to see each frame:

First Frame
(>_< PB sucks. text says: "declick the eyes for these two layers")

Second Frame
(blue text: "click the second tendril")
(green text: "declick the first tendril")

Third Frame
(red text: "click the third tendril")
(yellow text: "declick the second tendril")

6. make the seconds for each frame set to 0.2 seconds each

7. Okay, now go back to the first frame and click on the tween button and set it to Next Frame, 5 frames to add, all layers, and all parameters checked.

8. Repeat that step to frame two (it will be at the end of all the new frames.

9. on frame three, we want to loop the image. so click on the tween button and keep all of the settings the same EXCEPT it should say "First Frame" instead of Next Frame.

10. Hit play. if this has turned out the way you like it, then save it at a good optimized .gif setting that doesn't make it too grainy and enjoy! I added text and a border (we love borders, ne?) and here is my finished product:

She also asked about this icon:

This can be made with the same technique, only for each layer you make of smoke, make it go up into the corner and make it wider and "curlier" to get that smokey effect. ^^;; i'm too lazy to make another tut for that so that will have to do. it is not too hard, trust me! It just takes imagination :-)

^_^ i hope this helped some of you! if someone wants this icon, please comment and cred! ^_^ i hope i did okay for my first tutorial! thanks guys!
