My First Icon Tutorial!
Pretty crappy, at least compared to the other's I've seen here, but here's how I made this icon:

I use Photoshop 5, so this should work easily for other programs.
Here's what I decided to use, a picture of Mike Dirnt of Green Day, I cropped it to get this:

Not quite 100x100, by I like to add the effects first.
I duped the background twice, sharpened both, and boosted the contrast up by 25, then merged to get this:

A lot brigher and clearer to me.
Then I made new layers, in this order (i don't remember who's gradients or brushes these are, but every one I have, their maker is linked to in my user look up):
1.
Screen 75%
2.
Color Burn 75%
3.
Luminosity 50%
4. thought it could use a little texture so
Saturation 86%
Now, content with the look, I resized it to 100 x 100. Getting this:

add text and brushes as you see fit, I used a floral drawing type brush in black, in a new layer, flipping the image horizontally to get it on the right side instead of the left and flipping back, setting the layer to color burn 50%, getting this:

fot text, I decided on a line from one of my fave songs, "Existentialism On Prom Nigh: by Straylight Run, "Sing like you think no one's listening". I rotated the image to type on the side. 90 degrees. Basic Times New Roman font, in white, 17 pt. I used the like tool to darw a line between the the lines of words, the rotated back to put the "listening" on the top. I rendered the thext layers, then merged then down onto one layer. Set that on screen, 75%. Flattened, and ta da!
