Not quite off topic, but problem with PS and can no longer make icons cos of it!!

I am going nuts here. Can anyone tell me why my brushes for Photoshop 6 are freezing????? There I was, merrily making icons etc and using the brushes no problem at all...next day, I load up PS6, make an icon and click on the paintbrush icon. Brushes come up. Click then on the little arrow at the top to change them...and nada. Nothing. Button is down so I definately clicked it, but nothing happens. I went into my brush folder, deleted a stack of brushes that I no longer use nor like, figuring maybe I had too many. Nothing. Why o why is this happening?? I can't even use the eraser cos I can't get my brushes up!! Please please someone help me. I really didn't have a lot of brushes to begin with. So I can't imagine it being because of brush overload. Could it be because my brushes are in folders inside the Brush folder????
