First Icon Tutorial!
I was bored so I thought I'd try my hand at making a tute. It's not a particularly difficult or amazingly difficult icon to make but it was fun none the less. This was done in PS7 but can be translated to PSP quite easily imagine.
Here's what we end up with:

First off, if I have in anyway gotten the credits wrong for any brushes or anything, let me know and I'll change. Secondly this icon is up for grabs to use (if anyone likes it)all ya have to do is credit either
tygerfeet or
onyx_icons and comment at the end of the tute.
1. Select the image you want to use (I'm using the unbelievably sexy Gerry Butler for mine...image taken from www.gerardbutler.net)

2. Next we do the obvious crop and resize dealy to get something like this

3. Filter>Sharpen (just once in my case but sometimes it takes twice)Duplicate the layer and set the blend mode to Overlay at 100% opacity

4. Next, create a new layer and select the paintbucket tool. Using a dark blue hue (I used #141549 for mine) flood the layer and set the blend mode to exclusion at 50% opacity

5. Create another new layer and using a gradient by
crumblingwalls drag the gradient tool from the bottom left corner to the top right. Set the blend mode to multiply at 100%

6.Create another new layer and using a pale beige tone such as F7F2DB (you could use another pale complimentary colour if you like)use a grid like backgroudnd (I've lost the credit for this one...sorry)

7. Zoom in and using the eraser, remove the section of the brush that gets painted over your focal point (Gerry)

8.Create another new layer and find a grungey/smokey/rough looking brush (again, the credit for this one has been misplaced as I wasnt very organized with my credit notes for this batch of downloads...I found it at
100x100_brushes so if anyone knows whos it is, let me know and I'll fix the credits)

9. Again, zoom in and erase whatever has shown up over the focal point and the right side of the icon

10. At this point, you can add text if you like but I went for a textless look and instead I took a simple thin border also made by
crumblingwalls and used it in a new layer. I then erased most of it, leaving only two little bits in the right hand corners to frame sublty. Keep the blend mode at normal but tone the opacity down to 75% so it has some of the smokey look that is on the left hand side of the icon.
11.Merge your layers and voila! Your ready to save your simple yet (somewhat) cool looking icon!

Once again I must pimp my icon journal
onyx_icons its being revamped at the moment but come weekend I should have it back up so if you'd like to check it out, please feel free!
