Just recently, I began making black and white icons. I'm quite proud of some of my results, but I'm pretty sure there is a lot of room for improvement. What do you think?

The first one is my second icon ever made almost two years ago, it's been awhile.
On the second all I did was color it. But i'm wondering does it look awkward? It was pretty wide before i resized it.
The third. Ehh? I'm not that fond of it.
And the fourth I was just kinda expermienting.
Thoughts?

So... recently I started experimenting with textures and I would like some opinions on the results. All of them had been entered in icontests so to some extend I already had feedback on how they were received, but I'd like a bit more detail about how I could improve.

And there's a last icon I want feedback on... it got me eliminated to both my and the Mod's surprise (as she told me when she gave me my comments) and out of the 6 comments there's only one (outright) useful one (about not being neat enough with blending and the image being under contrasted)... the rest simply "complain" about the colouring (dull, pale, needs more colour) and one even said it look unfinished but not why it seemed like it.
So I'm not sure where I should go with that or how much faith to put into the comments since I thought the colouring was good the way it was. Anyway, it was a blending challenge and this is what I entered:

When I started making these I wanted them to look dark and gritty to, you know, match the mood of the show. At first I was really pleased, but now I'm worried that they're looking less gritty cool, and more gritty/dark and ugly.

What do you guys think?

Apparently there is a bit of nasty Malware Virus spreading through the social networking sites...including LiveJournal (of course). It targets communities, generating a mod-ish looking post informing the membership that the community is being closed, and then deletes all the community's entries. The post includes a couple of links which, when clicked, will infect the clickee, compromising their personal info as well as their f-list. Good times! [NOT!]

If this is not allowed, could someone please point me in the direction of a community that helps icon makers with problems when they are fairly new to it.

So I made this icon,

and was so happy that I had figured out how to do it, that was until I uploaded it and was watching it. I think I can see what is wrong with it and was wondering if someone knew why it did that. The seperate pictures dont look like that.
