Doctor Who fic: The stars are going out

Title: The stars are going out
Characters: Clara Oswald and Rose Tyler
Rating: G
Words: 740
Summary: Missing scene from The Name of the Doctor
Author's Note: Thank you very much to betawho for beta-ing

Clara walked between the desks of her students. She'd had to confiscate Leela's spitball-shooting pen and Tegan's paper plane, but Harry had begun to concentrate on his own work rather than steal glances at Martha's, and Susan had stopped looking out the window. Everything seemed to be going smoothly in class, so why did she feel so unnerved?

Almost in answer, the world shook. When Clara looked around her, all the students had gone. Somehow knowing what was about to happen, she closed her eyes and fell to her knees, making that point of contact with the ground her anchor, and hoped it would be enough to stop her being swept away along with everything else. She could hear the howls of time tear apart what had been her little peaceful enclave in that place. When she opened her eyes, nothing of the classroom remained. It was all black and empty, like the sky of Trenzalore when the stars had started to go out.
And then Clara remembered where she really was.

Clara didn't know whether mere minutes had passed since she had jumped into the Doctor's timeline, or an eternity. When she tried to think about it, the cacophony of her thousands of other lives overwhelmed her, leaving her no other option but to forget. Already, she barely remembered her students, but she did miss them. She wished she wasn't so alone.

"Hi, any idea where we are?"

Clara looked up to see who had spoken: a blonde girl about the same age as her, in a blue leather jacket. The two of them were the only things in the darkness.

"Who are you?" Clara breathed out.

"Who are you?” she replied, frowning.

And Clara gave her the only answer that she knew in that moment.

"My name is Clara Oswald. I'm here to save the Doctor... to stop the stars from going out."

The girl stifled a gasp, clearly taken aback.

"The Doctor? Where is he?"

"He's all around us, I entered his timeline. And I...” The words stuck in Clara’s throat as there came a sudden rush of memories. At first it was a relief, like the pleasant cold shock when as a child she would run into the water at the beach at Blackpool. But more kept piling on that were beyond her comprehension; waves were crashing over her, pulling her under, and she’d waded too deep...

"Clara, what is it?”

“I'm... everywhere, in every moment, all at once. I don’t know where I begin or end, I don’t..."

The girl’s eyes widened for an instant before she contained herself, biting her lip. She knelt and steadied Clara's trembling hands with her own.

"Listen to me. I know it's hard, with parts of you scattered throughout time and space, but you can't forget who you are right here and now."

Such was the conviction in her voice and the warmth of her hands that Clara felt a surge of courage, drowning out the chaos in her mind by repeating: I'm Clara Oswald. I have to save the Doctor. I'm Clara Oswald... But after a few seconds, she stopped with a shudder.

"Every time I try to hold on to something, I lose it," Clara explained. "It's like trying to swim upstream."

"Then hold on to me, and I'll bring you to the shore," came the reply, with a smile like sunshine.

"Who..?"

"My name is Rose. And together we'll get out of this, Clara."

Rose pulled Clara to her feet and lead her away. "I’ll take you to where I materialized, it's bound to be near the entrance. That way, when the Doctor comes back for you, and he will, he'll find you at once."

"And you?"

"I'll leave the same way I came. I've hit the right universe, now I just need the right timeline. The stars are going out, and I'm trying to stop it too."

Clara felt the temporal currents start pulling at her. Same as when I entered, she suddenly remembered, the memory growing stronger. Now all she had to do was let herself be carried along.

"Thank you, Rose. I don't know if I'll remember you." She felt like crying.

"Just remember who you are, Clara Oswald. Good luck."

"And you."

The two travellers shared a last, lingering look of mutual respect, for all the strange paths they had walked alone, before they disappeared to destinations only they would ever know.

Currently emotionally compromised by Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

After the first two episodes being fairly PG, episode 3 featured weightier concepts. Before now Jonathan’s magic has been a lark and it would have been easy for that to continue with him on the battlefield, but instead the show has done a good job of portraying his experiences in the war as suitably upsetting.

Arabella was wonderful yet again, kind and clever, and I could cry just thinking about her. And Jonathan. And Lady Pole. And Stephen. Oh, gosh, Stephen. What the Gentleman showed him was so sad, the best scene of the series, it made me cry a lot.

It was very easy to be fond of Norrell in the first couple of episodes with his love of books, excitement over Strange and the sympathy his social anxiety and sense of duty inspired. But here you see his fearfulness drive him to really selfish, bordering on malicious, deeds.
The sense of dread increases. This show is going to destroy me.

Doctor Who, Dark Water, my first impressions

Hmm, I admit, I hoped from the start that Missy would be the Master. I thought that maybe she’d be a different Time Lord villain because I actually believed Moffat (I know, I know) when I read him say that he wasn’t interested in bringing the Master back, but the Master was my first choice. So in that regard I’m glad, but the way that Moffat brushed past any trans considerations in his characterisation of Missy is pretty shitty. Oh, the Master has a woman’s body for the first time now so obvs she’s going to change her name to Missy, identify as a Time Lady and snog the Doctor, what other way is it supposed to work? Urgh. Let’s see how it goes.

I was right about the Time Lord technology being used to upload the dead, but I’m still having trouble understanding how the W3 operation actually works. The Cybermen are physically real, and have bodies. So is Danny Pink in a virtual reality while his body is being cyberised? But how does W3 obtain those bodies? And why the need for the uploaded consciousness in a virtual reality if Cybermen run on the physical form, brains with emotional inhibitors? IDGI

I thought the episode was good, the circumstances with Clara, Danny and the Doctor made for good drama. And I’m glad the finale is about the Master and the Cybermen rather than the Valeyard and a Trial like I theorised, it’s more original. Again, let’s see where it goes from here, if it will make sense and won’t be offensive.

One thing ocurrs to me: Clara didn't recognise Missy, so I presume the girl from the shop wasn't Missy herself but one of her minions? Or is it going to be something else entirely, and "I chose you well" is a red herring?

Also, it looks like the "Clara Oswald" never existed bit in the trailer is from next week. I still have no idea what's going on there.

And lastly, there's a great potential for creepiness if the Cybermen who come from people that died in S8 tell him how he died as they bear down on him, asking him why he didn't stop it from happening. That's the sort of thing the Master would do to the Doctor.

Speculation and Meta about the exploration of the Doctor's identity in S8

The Twelfth Doctor's identity, or: "Who frowned me this face?"
The first episode of S8 was run through with the Doctor's identity crisis, with parallels being drawn between him and the villain of the week as several questions were pondered. Can he be the same person after he's completely renewed himself? But what if his memory fails him? And why is he wearing another man's face?

This sort of thing is expected of a new Doctor's first episode, but it's interesting how this theme has continued throughout the first five with the Doctor being presented with further mirrors of himself, telling him and us who he is, and isn't:

* Into the Dalek: The Doctor defines himself as the antithesis of the Daleks, but is hit with a nasty truth as Rusty takes its cue from him to become a Dalek-hating machine. Nevertheless, Clara identifies him as someone trying to be a good man.
* Robot of Sherwood: Here the Doctor's mirror is Robin Hood, more legend than man, abandons high society and becomes a rogue to help others.
* Listen: Like Danny Pink, a once scared child who learned to live with his fear, subconsciously inspired by the soldier without a weapon of Clara's stories.
* Time Heist: Here his mirror is himself! The Architect, by his own description, is overbearing, manipulative and likes to think he's very clever. Could this episode be the nexus point in Twelve's character, where instead he'll start telling others who he is rather than others telling him?

Because it has been so drawn out, there's a a good chance this piecing together of the Doctor's character is leading into the finale somehow. And here's my own speculation:
We've already seen how dead people can be uploaded to a computer reality in Silence in the Library, and I think Missy's "Heaven" is actually the Matrix on Gallifrey (it also acted as a virtual reality in The Deadly Assasin).
The Time Lords are trying to get the Doctor to find them, beaming a message across the Universe of their location, calling it the Promised Land to attract him. According to the ending of The Day of the Doctor, Gallifrey is indeed the eternal home he's searching for, although I think, perhaps optimistically due to how falsely that rung, that ironically it won't provide him with the warm welcome he might have been hoping for.
The Time Lords did not give him extra regenerations because they loved him, but purely for practical reasons as he's their only chance of re-entering the Universe. So the reason he's wearing Caecilius' face is the reminder that he's merely on borrowed time and his comeuppance will come, as it did for Caecilius' descendant Frobisher.
The way Missy speaks to people who have died in the Doctor's presence makes me think she's gathering evidence for another Trial against him. Which could bring the Doctor up against the mirror of the Valeyard. Moffat has expressed reluctance to bring back the Master, so the Valeyard could be the alternative Time Lord enemy for his era. The Valeyard was supposed to come out from between the Doctor's Twelfth and Thirteenth incarnations, but details might be vague enough for it to be made to work with Moffat's re-jigging of the incarnation numbers.

The role of Clara, or: "Why do you need three mirrors?"
Interesting pairing, the Doctor with the identity crisis and the companion who was introduced as a personification of the show. What I mean by this:

* Victorian Clara's birthday was November 23. She died at the age of 26. Doctor Who, whose first episode aired on that date, was cancelled after that amount of years.
* Victorian Clara entertained kids as a nanny and adults as a barmaid, she was adored by all and the whole family mourned her loss.
* Oswin Oswald represented another duality vital to the show: humans and monsters.
* After the demise of the previous versions of Clara we were introduced to (where she bids us to remember her and for the Doctor to keep running), the 21st century one gets to thrive.

Along with her presence throughout the Doctor's timeline, it's almost as if Clara has been groomed to be the star witness if there is to be a Trial. As we've seen this series, and was mentioned in Time Heist, Clara has had a lot of practise making excuses for him, and she's been the main authority of who the Doctor is every episode this series. But will she provide a case for the Defense or the Prosecution? That depends on how relationship with the Doctor goes this series. As has been hinted by the production team, things might get tumultuous.

Feel free to share your thoughts, your own theories and/or mock me.

Series 5-7: all the timelines, plot holes, and ways to fill some of them

I’ve attempted to make sense of the plot of Series 5-7 of Doctor Who (up to and including The Time of the Doctor). I’ll have to heavily summarise this in order to put it in infographic form, but here’s the full version of my write-up in case anyone’s interested. I’ve pointed out all the timeline changes as long as they pertain to the series arc (unlike the re-writing of Kazran Sardick ), the plot holes, and my attempts to paper over some of them.

I warn you, it’s pretty long. Here we go:

TIMELINE 1
* Amy’s parents erased by Crack, she lives with her Aunt.
* The Doctor crashes TARDIS in her back garden, seals the Crack, but not before Prisoner Zero escapes.
* Amelia waits all night out in the garden for the Doctor, and wouldn’t meet him again until twelve years later, but she dreams of the TARDIS coming back for her in the morning as a child (bleed from T7).
* Her Aunt sends her to psychiatrists because of her insistence in the Doctor’s existence.
* Madam Kovarian’s sect of the Papal Mainframe have a plot to blow up the TARDIS before the Doctor can get to the fields of Trenzalore. Other species know that the TARDIS will explode and think it will be the Doctor’s doing, so they plan to shut him in the Pandorica before he does so.
* The Cracks have also eaten the ducks of the duck pond, the Cyberking and the Daleks that invaded Earth.
* Amy and Rory see future versions of themselves wave back at them in Wales in 2020.

Headscratcher: How does Amy exist if her parents got eaten by the Crack?
Possible answer: What gets eaten by the Crack ceases to exist from that point onwards and it’s people’s memories of their existence up to that point that get erased. Physical imprints of their existence remain, including children. Could also apply to T2 for the photograph left behind of Rory and the existence of River Song, and for T5 for all the events where the Doctor saved the world and, again, the existence of River Song.

T1->T2 Rory gets eaten by crack

TIMELINE 2
* Same as T1 but Rory doesn’t exist. Only future Amy exists to wave back at her past self in Wales in 2020.
* However, echoes of him remain: photographs and memories at the back of Amy’s mind that are enough for Rory’s consciousness to fully re-awaken in the body of a plastic Auton created by the Anti-Doctor League that trap the Doctor in the Pandorica.

Headscratcher: How does River Song exist if Rory is a plastic Auton and ceased to exist in human form before River was conceived? (see answer in T1)

Headscratcher: If the Doctor is known to be present at the fields of Trenzalore, why is River Song imprisoned for supposedly killing him earlier in his timeline?

Headscratcher: If the plot to have the Doctor killed at Lake Silencio is in place, why explode the TARDIS and the Universe before that happens in the Doctor’s timeline?
Possible answer: Stopping the Doctor from reaching Trenzalore by exploding the TARDIS was Plan A, Lake Silencio was Plan B. Or, maybe without the events of The Big Bang Amy might have changed her mind about marrying Rory, so River Song, whom they need for Lake Silencio, wouldn’t have been conceived.

Speculation: Only the Silence know about the Fields of Trenzalore and the phrase “Silence will Fall” is misinterpreted by other races as referring to the destruction of the Universe by the TARDIS exploding. It’s only after the reboot of the Universe that the association of the phrase ‘Silence will Fall’ with Trenzalore and the asking of the question become known.

T2->T3 TARDIS explodes. Universe begins to collapse

TIMELINE 3
* No more stars. Earth is the last living place in the cosmos, with the exploding TARDIS acting as its Sun.
* Amelia remembers stars (the crack in her bedroom is still responsible for the absence of her parents and the echoes of things lost)
* The Doctor doesn’t crash in her garden but she meets him, Amy and Rory that survive from T2 in the Museum.
* The collapse of the Universe has affected parts of Earth’s history, as seen in the Museum exhibits. Soon, even the inhabitants of Earth begin to wink out like the stars did, this happens to the Amelia from this timeline.

T3->T2->T1 The Doctor pilots the Pandorica into the exploding TARDIS inducing a reboot of the Universe. As the Doctor travels back through his timeline, Amy can sometimes hear him.

T1->T4 The Doctor finds Amelia in the garden and takes her back inside and tells her the story of an old, new, borrowed blue box as she sleeps.

T4->T5 The Doctor walks into the Crack which seals behind him, and he’s deleted from the Universe except from Amy’s memories. The reboot of the Universe is then complete.

TIMELINE 5
* Amy’s parents exist (as do the ducks in the duck pond!), while the Doctor never did, and with no Crack Prisoner Zero never invaded Amy’s home.
Speculation: Amy’s memories of the timeline where her parents had been eaten by the Crack and the Doctor crashed in her garden persist. She wakes up surprised to see her parents, because in her dreams she had been parent-less.
* Throughout her childhood she tells stories of the Doctor, and her parents send her to psychiatrists.

Headscratcher: Without the existence of the Doctor and the TARDIS, how does River Song exist? And why hasn’t the Universe gone to Hell like in Turn Left? (see answer in T1)

T5->T6 Amy remembers her travels with the Doctor

TIMELINE 6
* Once Amy remembers the Doctor thanks to the trigger from T4, not merely her meeting with him as a child, but the time she travelled with him in the TARDIS, he’s brought back into the Universe, along with everyone’s memories of the events he was involved in as far as the writers want to reference in future episodes.
* Rory, having been a time traveller, also remembers events from deleted timelines, such as Prisoner Zero terrorizing Leadworth (T1) and spending 2000 years as a plastic Roman (T3).

Series 6
* Until The Wedding of River Song, the entirety of Series 6 takes place in T6. There’s a lot of time travel here, but it’s closed loops within one timeline.
* Amy gets pregnant on her wedding night in the TARDIS.
* Amy witnesses the future Doctor’s death at Lake Silencio in 2012 at the hands of someone in a space suit in The Impossible Astronaut.
* They travel to 1969, where Amy is kidnapped by the Silence in ‘The Day of the Moon’ and replaced with a Ganger. Her real self is taken to Demon’s Run, where she unconsciously remotely controls her Ganger self that’s travelling with Rory and the Doctor.
* The Doctor uncovers the Ganger just as Amy is about to give birth in Demon’s Run. He and Rory go to Demon’s Run to get her and baby Melody who, having been conceived on the TARDIS, is a sort of Time Lord. They fail to rescue Melody, but find out she grows up to be River Song (the origin of the name being the translation of Melody Pond into the language of the Forest, where there is no word for ‘pond’ as all the water in the Forest is in the river, in Lorna Bucket’s prayer leaf).
* Melody is taken by Madame Kovarian’s people to 1960s America where she’s trapped in a space suit and conditioned to kill the Doctor (and the Silence settle on Earth long before that in order to manipulate humans to achieve the level of technology needed in order to invent said space suit by then).
* Little Melody manages to break free of the space suit in 1969 (messing up Madame Kovarian’s plan to bring Melody up to kill the Doctor freely in 2011) and manages to reach Leadworth, England by beginning of the 90s in order to grow up alongside Amy and Rory as their friend Mels.
* Amy and Rory have waited for the Doctor to return to them in Leadworth after the events of ‘A Good Man Goes to War’ and make a crop circle to call him to Earth. Mels barges her way into the TARDIS with them, and they crashland in Nazi Germany.
* Mels gets shot and regenerates into the form familiar as River Song. She poisons the Doctor. She learns about the name she will use and the future she will have with the Doctor and is able to understand the TARDIS, and trusting the word of her parents that the Doctor is worth saving, gives up all her regenerations in order to save his life.
* River is weakened after her sacrifice, so the Doctor takes her to a hospital in the 51st century. He leaves her a brand new copy of the TARDIS diary she will use in her life as River Song. She decides to study archeology.
* The Doctor leaves Amy and Rory with a new home and car in Upper Leadworth in The God Complex.
* Madame Kovarian and co. find River in the 51st century and drag her back to Lake Silencio in 2011 in a space suit that controls her to ensure she kills the Doctor.

Headscratcher: Why bother to influence Earth history to invent a spacesuit rather than bring their own and why does the Doctor’s assassin need to be a Time Lord?
Possible answer: The agent being a Time Lord and the technology employed belonging to the time period rather than a future one help to make it a fixed point in time.

* The Doctor calls Amy (pre-Demon’s Run), Rory and River to Lake Silencio in 2011 to witness his death (and Canton to see his body), although in truth it’s actually a robot replica inside of which he’s hidden, which can also fake the appearance of regenerating.

T6->T6B River in the space suit manages to stop herself shooting the Doctor

TIMELINE 6B
* The unravelling of a fixed point in time causes all of history to converge in that single moment.
* Amy is leader of the group fighting against the Silence. She remembers the other timeline save for some things like Rory’s face! Here Rory works for her.
* Amy remembers Rory and lets Madame Kovarian die for what she did to Melody.
* When The Doctor and River touch each other they are transported back to that moment in Lake Silencio in T6. The Doctor, still inside a robot replica, marries River Song and shows her how she wouldn’t be killing him if she pulls the trigger.

T6B->T6 River in the space suit shoots the Doctor, fullfilling the fixed point in time, time continues as normal

TIMELINE 6
* The River that witnesses it all, unlike pre-Demon’s Run Amy and Rory, knows that the Doctor isn’t really dead, but just pretends otherwise.
* The River in the space suit is sent to Stormcage prison for killing the Doctor.

Headscratcher: The Doctor allows River to be imprisoned for something she didn’t do, and for which she would have been unjustly charged anyway since it was the space suit that made her do it and there were no witnesses except her parents and her future self. He breaks her out of prison all the time, he could have broke her out permanently rather than keep dropping her back in again now that he knows the truth. Perhaps it’s River’s choice to remain in prison because she’d do anything that might help keep the Doctor safe, but it’d be nice for that to be explicit, since it’s a huge deal!
Headscratcher: How long did River spend in prison anyway? Lots of time, based on the amount of filled pages in her diary we see in ‘The Impossible Astronaut’, where she’s still imprisoned, and during which practically the entirety of their relationship happened if it’s true that they are meeting each other in reverse order and therefore that kiss in The Day of the Moon is one of the last from River’s point of view. I imagine this is not really the case, and that the Doctor (post-Lake Silencio) and River do meet each other a lot between the time she’s let out of prison and the Library, probably between The Angels Take Manhattan and The Snowmen from the Doctor’s point of view.

* On one of the occasions she breaks out of prison, she reveals to Amy and Rory (post-The God Complex, and who remember experiencing T6B) that the Doctor is still alive after all.
* BTW, Madame Kovarian should be alive in this timeline, and it’s not revealed what came of her.

Series 7A
* Still in T6, but the Doctor has used Silence technology to make sure all records of himself in the Universe are deleted (revealed in minisode in S7 boxset).
* Since there are now no records of River Song having killed anyone, she is freed from prison and becomes a Professor of Archeology.
* Meanwhile the Doctor has hooked back up with Amy and Rory. In the episode The Angels Take Manhattan, he takes them to present-day New York…

T6->T6C Weeping Angels take over Manhattan

TIMELINE 6C
* Weeping Angels have infested New York throughout it’s history, causing time distortions that make it difficult for the TARDIS to land there.
* A Weeping Angel in present-day New York sends Rory to the 1930s where he meets Professor River Song, who’s arrived there by vortex manipulator, which she uses as a homing beacon so that the Doctor and Amy can use the TARDIS to reach them.
* They encounter a Rory dying of old age, which suggests that a Weeping Angel in the 1930s will get him and send him even further back in time. The Weeping Angels have used the energy obtained from repeatedly sending people back in time to completely control the city, to the point where even the Statue of Liberty is a Weeping Angel.
* Rory and Amy throw themselves off a building to create a paradox by Rory dying before he’s supposed to in the current timeline.

T6C->T6 The paradox causes the Weeping Angel timeline to evaporate

TIMELINE 6
* Amy and Rory find themselves in present-day New York, alive, as well as the Doctor and River. But there’s still a lot of temporal scar tissue, so the TARDIS can never land there in the 1930s again.
* A remaining Weeping Angel sends Rory back to the 1930s. Amy allows herself to also be sent back by the Weeping Angel to be reunited with him. The couple are destined to live out their lives there, as their graves in present-day New York can attest. The Doctor can never visit them or interfere with that destiny because that would risk seriously damaging the fabric of spacetime because of that scar tissue (explanation taken from Steven Moffat in DWM).
* River can nevertheless use her vortex manipulator to visit them in the past, and hand over to Amy a copy of a book called ‘The Angel’s Kiss’ by Melody Malone, which contains all the events that took place in the episode and which had essentially guided them throughout it. Amy is to copy out that book (ontological paradox) and publish it.
* ‘The Angel’s Kiss’ contains an Epilogue which is a message from Amy to the Doctor. In the present day, the Doctor, who had torn that page out earlier without looking at it, recovers it and reads it. In her message Amy asks him to find Amelia waiting in the garden and tell her about the wonderful adventures they’d have if they ever met again. It is unclear whether this is something Amy has already experienced in T6, or whether she’s asking him to make a change to the current timeline. Just in case she is…

T6->T7 The Doctor travels to when Amelia waited all night in the garden and gives her hope that they’ll meet again and have all sorts of adventures.

TIMELINE 7
* Amelia carries the knowledge that she’ll meet the Doctor again with her until she does.
* A glimpse of this timeline bleeds into Amy’s dreams in T1.
Headscratcher: If T6 was a timeline without a Crack tormenting little Amelia’s life, then how does she end up waiting for the Doctor in the garden?
Possible answer: A different version of the events at the beginning of The Eleventh Hour took place in T6, where there is no Crack but the Doctor still crashed into Amelia’s shed. Or, Amelia’s memories of other timelines prompted her to wait for the Doctor in the garden one night whether the Doctor crashed into her shed or not, and the Doctor meets her then.

Series 7B
* Having encountered two versions of the same person, Oswin Oswald in the Dalek Asylum and Clara Oswin Oswald in Victorian England, both of whom died, the Doctor searches for and ends up finding Clara Oswald in present-day London.
* River died in the Library. Her body was buried in Trenzalore but her consciousness was digitised and kept in the Library’s hardrive, from which she can escape.
* The Great Intelligence gets pissed off at the Doctor and lures him to Trenzalore. This is the Doctor’s future final resting place, and the dying TARDIS is his tomb. It holds his whole timeline. His real name is the password to open it. River’s consciousness follows Clara into Trenzalore and with the G.I. about to kill Clara and the Paternoster Gang, she utters the Doctor’s name to open the TARDIS.

Headscratcher: According to Silence in the Library, there is only one reason the Doctor would tell anyone his name, and only one time he could. Yet Clara is able to read it in a book in the TARDIS and according to River she got him to reveal it to her by nagging him till he did. Okay.

T7->T7B The GI enters the Doctor’s timeline, scatters into many versions of himself that undo all of the Doctor’s victories and make it like he never existed

TIMELINE T7B
* Without the Doctor’s influence in their lives, the Paternoster Gang wouldn’t be friends, so Strax turns on Vastra and Jenny disappears.
* The stars go out as all the corners of the Universe the Doctor saved are destroyed

T7B->T7 Clara enters the Doctor’s timeline after the GI, scatters into many versions of herself to save the Doctor’s life and reverse the damage done by the GI

TIMELINE 7
* Mostly the many Claras that have appeared throughout his life go unnoticed by the Doctor, Oswin and Clara Oswald were the exceptions.
* The original GI got destroyed when entering the Doctor’s timeline and the same should have happened to the original Clara, but the Doctor saves her.

The Day of the Doctor
* Eleven and Ten are let into the Time War by the Moment just when the War Doctor was about to use it to destroy all of Gallifrey and the entire Dalek fleet that has surrounded the planet. They realise that instead they can freeze Gallifrey in time and transport it to a pocket Universe at the moment as the Daleks are about to fire, so the Daleks destroy themselves in the crossfire, while it appears that they got destroyed along with Gallifrey.
* Pulling off such a feat would require <strike>the Universe ceasing to obey any logic</strike> a lot of calculations, so all of the Doctors 13 incarnations (including Twelve and War) are enlisted.
Speculation: They, too, are allowed passage into the Time War by the Moment, and also forget these events, like Nine and Ten would.

Headscratcher: How does Nine have such realistic, intense, memories of destroying Gallifrey and the Daleks if supposedly he didn’t?
Possible answer: The Moment, able to access the Doctors thoughts, also gave him memories of an aborted timeline in which he did destroy Gallifrey and the Daleks.

Headscratcher: The depiction of the final day of the Time War as a Dalek invasion of a Gallifrey largely populated by children is completely inconsistent with previous descriptions of it. Quote from The End of Time Part 2: "Perhaps it’s time. This is only the furthest edge of the Time War. But at its heart, millions die every second, lost in bloodlust and insanity, with Time itself resurrecting them, to find new ways of dying over and over again. A travesty of life. Isn’t it better to end it at last?"

* Having done the deed, the Doctors go their separate ways. Gallifrey is somewhere in another Universe. Eleven meets someone who’s hinted to be a future version of himself who is retired and working as a curator at the National Gallery.

Headscratcher: Why isn’t the Doctor more surprised by the idea of meeting himself if he’s supposedly knows himself to be the last incarnation?

The Time of the Doctor
* The Doctor heads to Trenzalore, but before it’s the graveyard planet of ‘The Name of the Doctor’, and instead houses a town called Christmas. There’s one last remaining Crack. The Time Lords, in a different Universe, are using that Crack as a a tether and have let a truth field bleed through it to get the Doctor to speak his true name as a kind of password to confirm this is the right Universe so they can come through.
* Other species in the Universe want to destroy the planet rather than allow the possibility of it serving as a passage for the Time Lords. The Doctor knows that he can’t speak his name and allow the Time Lords passage while entire fleets await to go to war with them. So he decides to stay and defend Trenzalore from the invaders intent on destroying the planet, aided by the Papal Mainframa led by Tasha Lem. Because of War and 10.5, he’s already used up all his regenerations.

Headscratcher: If Eleven doesn’t have the capacity to regenerate, then why fake a regeneration lightshow at Lake Silencio? And more importantly, from where does he get the regeneration energy to heal River’s wrist in The Angels Take Manhattan?
Possible answer: Since he’s widely known as the Eleventh Doctor and the War Doctor is a secret, the regeneration lightshow made his death more convincing. And in TATM that was him giving years off his life to heal River (like Ten did in Rise of the Cybermen to recharge the TARDIS crystal) which he can only do thanks to the regeneration energy that River gave him in Let’s Kill Hitler in his system.

Headscratcher: But in Let’s Kill Hitler, when the Doctor is poisoned he tells hologram Amelia that maybe he should regenerate, but hologram Amelia tells him the poison has interrupted that ability. So there the Doctor thought he still had the capacity to regenerate and the TARDIS confirms that the capacity existed for it to be interrupted. Ehem.

* The Doctor fights for centuries and ages until his body can’t take it anymore.

Speculation: In other occasions the Doctor has lived centuries without aging, but warfare does age him, as happened with the War Doctor.

* Clara begs the Time Lords through the Crack to save the Doctor’s life.

Speculation: The Time Lords, aware of the stalemate, decide to give the Doctor more regenerations since he is their best chance of making it to this Universe, even if it means they have to seal the last Crack, since it won’t do them any good if he dies and Trenzalore is destroyed. They’re now banking on him finding another way.

T7->T8 The Doctor doesn’t die on Trenzalore, changing his future

TIMELINE 8
* The Doctor uses his regeneration energy to defeat the invading Daleks and save the Christmas town before turning into Twelve.

Headscratcher: If the Doctor doesn’t die on Trenzalore, that means the events of ‘The Name of the Doctor’ can’t happen, Clara can’t become The Impossible Girl and so he would never have met her. Paradox! It would also mean the Great Intelligence is still out there.
Possible answer: Either:
a) The fact that the Doctor has already experienced a timeline in which he meets Clara, and since time travellers don’t forget aborted timelines, means that Clara and the Doctor will still know each other the same as ever after the timeline change
b) This paradox will be addressed as something that needs to be fixed in Series 8.
c) The Doctor will be buried at Trenzalore one day, just not just yet. Although it would make no sense for the TARDIS interior to be the current one. And rather depressing that Trenzalore becomes a graveyard planet anyway even though Christmas town was saved in the end.

Headscratcher: So Madame Kovarian’s plan to stop the Doctor from rescuing the Time Lords through the Crack on Trenzalore involves causing the explosion that creates the Cracks in the first place? Okay.

Any questions, feedback or suggestions are welcome, as well as any offers of help to put this in graphic form.

The staff of TARDIS School

Welcome to TARDIS School: We put the 'Universe' in 'University'! The entrance may be single-file only, but the facility is extraordinarily roomy. A brief introduction to the staff and the subjects they teach:

Rose Tyler - Communications
In her lessons, Miss Tyler teaches both interpersonal skills and how to come up with a single powerful message and beam it across a variety of media. She is friendly and approachable, and students will often pour out their troubles to her. She once looked into the heart of the TARDIS temporarily acquiring god-like powers over time and space that enabled her to establish the Bad Wolf Project, a case-study for a year-long coursework for which it is impossible to cheat on because its nature and results are guaranteed to be unique to each individual student.

Clara Oswald - English
Miss Oswald is a teacher full of infectious curiosity and passion for her subject. She has the ability to describe in breathtaking detail the historical background of each book they study, almost as if she had been there herself. She knows both how to command good behaviour from her students as well as how to make lessons feel like playtime.

Martha Jones - Biology and Chemistry
A class full of impetuous students mixing chemicals can be a high-risk situation, but not so under Doctor Jones' competent watch. Alert at all times and cool in the face of fire, the students trust her implicitly. Her expertise in human and alien biology coupled with her wide-ranging experience makes for fascinating lessons.

Mickey Smith - IT
During lessons, Mr. Smith always speaks to each student individually to make sure none of them are feeling stuck and frustrated. He also encourages their initiative and creativity. His lessons are a relaxed affair, and he will occasionally allow himself to be reeled into conversations about football and car engines.

Romana - Physics
Ms. Romana traditionally begins the school year by breezily asking her nonplussed students to call her Fred, setting the tone for the bemusement they are about to experience throughout the year. Although capable of explaining her subject at a level they can understand, quite often a question from a student might cause her to brightly and earnestly launch into an explanation filled with incomprehensibly advanced jargon. She will good-naturedly backtrack when she realises their confusion, however.

The Doctor - TARDIS owner, janitor and itinerant substitute teacher
The Doctor is the man that owns and looks after the TARDIS and who established the school. He refuses the title of headmaster, claiming that it would be more accurate to call him the janitor. Whenever one of the teachers can't give class, he'll cheerfully fill in, even if it means being in more than one place at the same time. His lessons tend to be memorable experiences for the students, as he'll never follow the curriculum, but will enthusiastically expound on the subject at hand aided by impromptu school trips and mind-bending practical demonstrations.

Meta: Loss in Doctor Who

Discussion and critique of The Day of the Doctor:

From 2005, Doctor Who has been the story of a man who did something terrible and lost everything, and learns to recover thanks to the friends he makes and by never giving up and saving lives and bringing peace where he can. In the 50th anniversary episode that was changed to be the story of a man that never actually lost anything or did anything terrible, though wouldn't realise this until after a few years upon which he'd get everything he mourned back.

For Series Five of Doctor Who, Steven Moffat wrote a story that ended in a woman declaring to a room full of adults that she still believes in her childhood dreams, and being validated for it. It's a lovely, personal sentiment coming from a man who loved Doctor Who since childhood, had it taken from him for a while, and now revels more than anyone in it being back.

But that can't be the only story he tells, because not everybody's lives turn out as well as his. Some people lose things that can never come back, and those people need stories that give them hope more than anyone else.

In The Writer's Tale, Russell T Davies often speaks of people who are now dead. He's a gay man that witnessed the AIDS crisis, and lost many friends. His mother died of cancer. The Doctor's story of loss, of being a lone survivor, must have come from somewhere personal for him too. He wrote an inspiring story of a man recovering from that, stumbling into many pitfalls on the way, showing the viewer the mistakes to avoid in their own life, or to reassure them that it's natural to make mistakes, but it doesn't mean one should give up. It's inspiring. It's cathartic. It's true to life.

Saying that all that was for nothing, that the loss never really happened in the first place and would never be something the doctor would ever have to live with again, is not.

'Everybody lives' was magical because it was 'just this once'. It loses its meaning once everybody lives every time, and even the preceding times when you thought they hadn't.

So where does it end? Should the Doctor go back to Pompeii and make sure all its inhabitants are safely transported to a pocket universe so that to history it looks like they all died, when in fact they didn't? How disrespectful would that be to the real-life deaths of all those people?

I refer you once more to the paragraph about Russell T Davies and loss. Sometimes, the Doctor needs to make hard decisions, he needs to suffer loss, because that is what happens in real life. And in real-life there is no takesies-backsies. There is just your choices going forward.

Ah, but Doctor Who is escapism! Of course fiction should be a way to explore the things you wish would happen in real life!

Twilight and Harry Potter are both escapism too. However, in Harry Potter there is a cost, consequences and death, but thanks to hope and love a happy ending is possible. In Twilight there is no cost, things always turn out for the protagonists exactly as they wanted. It's cowardly storytelling, and this is what i believe Steven Moffat suffers from as well.

There is another issue entirely on the logic and lack of continuity of it all. We've been shown time and time again that Time Lord society is awful and the Doctor much prefers to break away from all that, so the idea that he's always been heading home, towards Gallifrey, is ridiculous. Also, at the end of the Time War it wasn't just Time Lords on Gallifrey vs. Daleks, it sprawled across time and space and involved third-party entities beyond one's imagination like the Skaro Degradations, the Nightmare Child, the Could've-been-King and his Army of Meanwhiles and Neverweres. So even if presumably in the last instant the entire battle had somehow conveniently converged around Gallifrey, and the stupid crossfire plan miraculously succeeds in destroying all the Daleks except the Emperor and the Void Ship, what about all those things? Knowing that the Doctor is heading towards a planet full of evil monstrosities and Time Lords willing to disintegrate the cosmos, his hopeful smile at the end is hard to swallow. But I wanted to concentrate on the issue of loss in storytelling.

Any thoughts welcome!

Review and meta over The Night of the Doctor

<lj-embed id="7" />
(doctorwho reaction post here)

My reactions:

*I just about died when I heard his voice. I had heard rumours about how there was going to be a minisode of McGann regenerating into John Hurt, but there's always rumours of Paul McGann, so I didn't dare believe. So this was a wonderful surprise.

*Happy Birthday Paul McGann!

*Seriously, apparently he's 54 today, although he looks a decade younger. He looks mighty fine here with the curly hair and everything.

*I'm really pleased that he got a significant amount to play, rather than just dropping dead so John Hurt could arise in his place. Dramatic scenes and lots of good lines too, including a roll call of his Big Finish companions before regeneration, so thanks Moffat :)

*Canon explanation for why all current regenerations have looked similar! It's the effect of the regeneration potion the Sisterhood of Karn gave him on his regeneration mechanism.

*I somehow know they are called the Sisterhood of Karn, although I have no idea what classic serial or maybe book they hail from. Fandom osmosis. EDIT: Just re-watched, the Sisterhood was named, but I knew it was then from before, the moment Karn was mentioned.

*What's with the low-rent titles?

*I like that it's a young John Hurt. Hurt!Doctor must have been through a lot. Reminds me that I do still feel excitement over John Hurt at times.

*I don't know what this does to my hopes of Hurt!Doctor being from an alternate timeline. Because that's the only way Rose's role makes any sense to me. I understand nothing and fear everything.

*Well, whatever happens, at least this watching this made me very happy and excited :D

*EDIT: Just re-watched. Further thoughts:

On one hand, it's a bummer that Eight isn't the Time War Doctor as I always imagined, on the other I can see why he wouldn't be. That he fought on the front lines of the Time War meant that there was always a moment where the Doctor decided to leave aside his usual principles and be a soldier instead. In this version of the story he actually regenerated into a form that would be a better warrior, implying that Eight didn't have the capacity to be that, since he wasn't born to be one. But then again, no soldier is.
Maybe it works to imagine that before the Time War, none of the Doctor's incarnations really had it in them to be a War Doctor. But every regeneration since he turned into Hurt, he has, with the golden lightshow as a reminder.

Four Doctor Who Wallpapers with Quotes

Here are links to four wallpapers I made with HD caps of Journey's End and The Unicorn and the Wasp. They each have a famous quote on it.

Agatha Christie

Doctor Who Fic: Agent of Destruction 2/2

Title: Agent of Destruction 2/2
Words: 700
Characters: The Daleks, The Doctor (unspecific incarnation)
Rating: PG-7 for dark themes
Spoilers: None
Summary: AU where the Daleks are good and the Doctor is bad
Author's note: Usually writing fic is to me an experience akin to getting root canal, but I found this one shockingly easy to write. I hope you enjoy reading at as much as I enjoyed writing it. It's pretty good! Concrit welcome, though. Part 1 here

The Doctor awaited them under the light of the aurora. He seemed oblivious to the surrounding snowy wastes, lying back on a deckchair wearing sunglasses, a new suit, and a big, bright grin on his new face.

"Aww, you made it!" he trilled.

"HALT!" Torth bellowed. "YOU ARE THE DOC-TOR. YOU ARE AN E-NE-MY OF THE DA-LEKS."

To Drad's disappointment, the Doctor looked unperturbed.

"Save it, the TARDIS and I are protected by a force field. I've learnt my lesson, you are a formidable foe, blah blah blah, now shut up and listen to my offer."

"You are an agent of destruction. We will not negotiate with you."

"Bit hypocritical, that, with your history? Don't you wish you could turn back time?" The Doctor's grin widened in the silence that followed. He didn't mean...? "Yep, I have pinpointed the exact moment Davros decided stunted and lacking in all emotion but hate would be a good look for the Daleks. It would be the easiest thing to intervene right there and then, save you from those centuries of bloodshed it took you to throw off your programming."

"YOU MEAN TO A-VERT OUR CRE-A-TION?"

"Noooooooooo, just use your current condition to shape the original blueprints to be more like you from the start. You understood that, right? It's so nice having time-travel talk with an intelligent species for a change. Of course, I'd need your cooperation."

"Without our warrior origins, we would be helpless against the likes of you."

"Like you stand a chance right now! I've already proved to you that there's not a single thing you can do to stop me. Think of all the lives that'll be saved this way, and then you'll be able to continue to nanny the Universe to your heart's content."

Drad spun around and started to head towards the ship. He had heard enough. Images of the Doctor's new appearance needed to be fed into the recognition software, and if they started monitoring his TARDIS now, they might capture valuable information about its dematerialisation into the Vortex that could allow them to track and even give it chase one day. But after a few metres, a great wave of bleakness washed over him. Torth had not followed.

"Dalek Torth. Return to the ship with me. He means to trick us."

"Hey, remember I'd be putting myself at your mercy."

"He will capture us, and make us do his bidding."

"It seems your friend will use any excuse to hold on to his Dalek weapon arsenal. I'll tell you something, the real strength is in never using any weapons."

"The Doctor has caused more death and destruction than we ever have!"

"Death and destruction? Hardly. Might swap a few things around, delay a life here, extend one there, but the net result is the same. I have a better sense of what I'm doing than you'll ever have, you know."

"Lies! Fifty billion lives in the Shartinae galaxy, gone!"

"You mean had their birth delayed for a billion years, so they'll survive the the supernova explosion scheduled to go off before then?" Drad stumbled, taken aback, and the Doctor ploughed on triumphantly: "Torth, I am no villain. That's just what you've been told by a bunch of Daleks who don't like being second-best at what they do. Ditch this clown, and we can save countless lives together."

Dalek Torth had remained completely immobile during this whole exchange.

"DALEK DRAD. MAY-BE WE SHOULD-"

"I'm sorry Dalek Torth, but you're not thinking straight..."

Daleks did not possess gun arms anymore, but they all still had the spheres on their shells that they needed to gather data about their surroundings, and which, at a pinch, could be ejected and used as explosive devices or, as Dalek Drad intended, to emit an electro-magnetic pulse that could temporarily stun any Dalek. However, Drad was rusty at the technique, and gave Torth time to charge and fire the emergency weapon it alone of the two Daleks was equipped with. Drad died as Torth's systems froze.

The Doctor pondered the futility of weapons, and his luck that the new imprint for the Dalek race would be based on pliable Torth rather than strong-willed Drad, as he wheeled the former into the TARDIS, leaving the carcass of the latter to rust in the ice.

Doctor Who Fic: Agent of Destruction 1/2

Title: Agent of Destruction 1/2
Words: 800
Characters: The Daleks
Rating: PG-7 for dark themes
Spoilers: None
Summary: AU where the Daleks are good and the Doctor is bad
Author's note: Usually writing fic is to me an experience akin to getting root canal, but I found this one shockingly easy to write. I hope you enjoy reading at as much as I enjoyed writing it. It's pretty good! Concrit welcome, though.

A flashing mauve alert. It was a message from the Shadow Proclamation, with two attached images. A before, and an after. Dalek Drad knew what had happened at once. He'd been having nightmares about it for weeks.

Strictly speaking, Daleks didn't need to sleep; it was part of their breeding as the most perfect instruments of war in the universe. But ever since they had gained independence from their creator Davros, and decided instead to apply their magnificent brainpower to monitor the cosmos and become its ultimate guardians, a one-hour nap every 19 hours had been encouraged. With the amount of information the Daleks needed to sift through, brief periods of suspended sensorial activity helped boost their neural functions during wakefulness considerably, and studies showed it made them happier too.

But recent reports had troubled Dalek Drad's rest. A planet was advertising itself as a host for an interstellar science fair, when recent records had deemed it as a host to nothing more complex than eukaryotes; half a galaxy had suddenly shrunk by 4% (become one billion years younger, in fact); the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy had been turned into a gateway to the Big Bang... All instances of time-travel gone wrong on a large scale, as well as a vast uptick in the usual small-scale stuff, and that could only mean one thing. An Oncoming Storm. He'd seen it before, he knew the signs. Soon, reports would start pouring in from all over of people disappearing to that dread sound of oscillating screeching and grinding. And now, as he feared, there was confirmation.

A cluster of stars no more than ten light-years away from the Dalek haven had been rearranged to form a symbol, angled to face them and easily visible at night by naked eye, never mind a Dalek's telescopic lens. It had happened while Dalek Drad had been sleeping. The symbol was a question mark, the Doctor's self-proclaimed calling sign.

One of the shifted stars was orbited by a Level 5 planet. Whether its population had survived the move or not remained to be seen. Dalek Drad suspected that they were fine; not because the Doctor cared about their lives, but because it would be a matter of pride for him to pull off the feat with the greatest amount of finesse possible. All he wanted to do was taunt the Daleks, tempt them to come and investigate, as of course they would do. What choice did they have?

Dalek Torth greeted Dalek Drad upon entrance to the stealth ship they'd be taking. Dalek Torth was possessed of an old-fashioned voicebox, and what he had surely meant as a warm welcome came out as an alarming grating shriek that almost overloaded Dalek Drad's already frayed nerves. On the other hand, it might prove useful if they indeed encountered the Doctor. If they could convince him for a split-second that he was coming up against the Daleks of old - remorseless exterminators - it might give them the needed advantage.

"THE DOC-TOR SUR-VIVED THE FALL AT THE ME-DU-SA CAS-CADE?" Torth asked as they set off.

"Of course he survived. He always survives," Drad replied bitterly.

"HE MUST HAVE RE-GE-NE-RA-TED."

"There have been no new sightings of his old faces, not even with our perfected recognition technology, so that would be likely, yes."

"THE DOC-TOR IS OUT THERE. AND WE DON'T KNOW WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE. OR WHERE HE WILL AP-PEAR NEXT."

"His malfunctioning timeship is mostly to blame for that. And he doesn't seem to care. He'll spread chaos wherever he lands. It's all he has left."

"IT'S A GOOD THING THERE ARE NO MORE TIME LORDS. I-MA-GINE HA-VING TO DEAL WITH MORE LIKE HIM."

"The Doctor was always unique amongst his race. The other Time Lords simply watched the universe, like us, vowing never to interfere. He started meddling with the fabric of space-time the first chance he got. They alone had the power to stop him."

"WE ALMOST GOT HIM ONCE AND FOR ALL LAST TIME. WE WILL HAVE A-NO-THER CHANCE."

"I'm just afraid that now that we've emerged as his current biggest threat, he'll try to wipe us all out, like he did with his own people."

The rest of the journey passed in near silence. First, they took photographs of the planet from their shielded ship. The Doctor had indeed managed to transport the planet without causing it or its inhabitants any harm. Next, they needed to land on the planet's surface to scan it inside and out for Time Lord technology. They chose a large desert area near the equator. It was with grim lack of surprise that they detected the presence of a dimensionally transcendental cubicle along the planet's magnetic north pole.

Continued in part 2
