jenwrites: The post-racial fairy tale of my youth :: See, I'm an incredibly awkward human being. I try to say something well-intentioned and supportive to a person of color who I know primarily through their writings against racism, and later find out that what I've said is near the top of a list of "Stupid things that white liberals say." And then when I next see them, I'm too embarrassed to say anything to them at all. Should I apologize? Will that make things worse? Will my apology come off as a white woman's tears? And why the hell do I feel compelled to say these things instead of just talking to them like human beings? It's like I've got just enough awareness to be annoying and not enough to be helpful.

Bodies & Books « Imagine Today :: I agree. Make yourself heard with your buying power but also, use your voice. Call out incidents like this, blog about it, talk about it, take it apart… become more aware of the biases that you may have personally absorbed from your culture so that you can better fight them because no one should be made to feel unworthy for looking like themselves.

Now that it's Monday everywhere, thanks to everyone for participating in IBARW 4!

As I always note, blogging against racism should not be contained to a week. The IBARW Delicious will intermittently gather links throughout the year, and we're still working out some kind of newsletter/linkspam collection.

I wanted to especially thank bowlerhat_girl, jinian, la_vie_noire, laurashapiro, outou, and sophinisba for their help in tagging and posting links; jinian and kate_nepveu for working on the semi-auto-posting script and Kate for managing it through the week; la_vie_noire, laurashapiro, and inkstone for help spreading the word; and la_vie_noire for Spanish-language help. The Difference Between What You Say and What You Are | The Angry Black Woman :: Bias, prejudice, wrong thinking can be the product of conscious thought or unconscious/unexamined thought. It seems to me that a large percentage of people who bust out with really ignorant statements often do so because they have not ever, ever truly thought them through to their logical conclusions. If they did, or if someone challenged them to, their thinking could change.Most activists realized this about people long ago. And thus many attempt to make a distinction between “You said something X-ist” and “You are a X-ist.”

International Blog Against Racism Week « Enter the Octopus :: As many of you know, I’m from the Deep South. I’ve seen racism up close and personal. We’ve got it here. Of course, it’s everywhere else, too, but let’s just leave it as the South has a longstanding racial wound that still hasn’t healed, and the days of institutionalized racism aren’t as far in the past here as they are in other places. I was born after the Civil Rights era, so I grew up in a fully integrated school system, worked alongside people of all different races and creeds and have lived in mixed neighborhoods all of my life. When you’re living in that kind of environment it’s easy to think that it’s always been that way. But it hasn’t, and things can be difficult here for all of us.

jonquil: She's not there, part N :: In this book (not naming it because I don't want to give it or its author advertising), "Seminole patchwork" is an abstract free-floating concept, divorced from the living Seminoles who created and continue to create it; a woman in California can create the technique ab initio by examining her mother's 1940s skirt and a few other photographs of textiles. No consultation with actual Seminoles is required or, apparently, considered. (Incidentally, none of the patterns I linked to under "beautiful stuff" above is included in the book; to the author, "Seminole piecing" means "zigzaggy stuff like my mother's skirt."She created all her designs with pencil and graph paper and, later, on a computer.) This is what cultural appropriation is all about: taking somebody else's hard work, filing their names and history and identities off it, and reselling it as your own.

misadventurelad: White investment in colorism :: Recently, I've seen and heard tell of people derailing discussions of progressive and educational discussions of racism by asserting that a) colorism is rampant within communities of color (specifically communities connected to South Asia and the African Diaspora) and that it is, in fact, evidence that we're all racist (and the logic is, then, that we ought to just continue on our merry and racist way, damaging some, but not others) b) that non-white persons have no place to speak on external racism until they've dealt with internal racism and c) colorism is an issue specific to communities of color, hence the reluctance to speak on it in public spaces and therefore, it is not an issue for white people.

Not for your entertainment: International Blog Against Racism Week :: Anywho, this does give me a great opportunity to write down some of the thoughts that I've been having lately relating to race. Specifically, being multiracial. I've always known that I wasn't White. But I've also always known that I wasn't Latin@, either. I was something other, something that could not fit neatly into either category. I was always assumed to be one or the other. I would be with White people, and they would assume I was Latin@, because I "looked Spanish" and when I'm around Latin@ people, it was assumed I was white because I was pale (read: I didn't look like a stereotypical Latin@ person).

Racism and genre fiction | Blog | Futurismic :: The important outcome of RaceFail for me – as for many others – was the uncomfortable but important realisation that, despite my best efforts to the contrary, I’m still racist sometimes. We tend to think of racism as an active verb, something that is by definition pursued deliberately, but that’s not necessarily the case. At very deep levels of our culture, we’re conditioned into a worldview that subconsciously reinforces the values of the past, even when we consciously embrace the ethics of the present. I guess you could say that – in what I hope and believe to be the majority of cases, at least within the genre fiction community – we’re racist by accident rather than design.

I hadn't seen nor been aware of the original Black in America and apparently it was a two-day broadcast so it's entirely possible I missed something really, really important in an earlier installment. What follows is my opinion on what I did see and if anyone saw the rest and would like to school me, please come and do so. (and they did! Rescued by the people native to the area, he later encounters the (in our own history) doomed English settlement of Roanoke and saves it from destruction. His appearance results in an "anomaly" that threatens space-time.

And I tend to wave it off, because really I don't see a point in talking about the emotional impact of participating in these discussions. No, that's a lie. I do talk about it. In safe spaces, behind closed doors with people I know I can trust. Because that's the only place it's (generally) acceptable to show weakness as an anti-racist POC. Otherwise the slurs and the misconceptions and the appropriation and the fucking fail will make you cry in front of people who have already made it clear that your feelings don't matter to them.

We visit my grandparents and extended family in India every few years - Mum goes more regularly then Sid and I go. I still think of myself as Indian, Australian has not ever come to mind first in terms of that. I like that it says I am 'Australian' in my passport for my nationality but every time I see it, it still jolts a little.This just makes me go back to trying to think what 'home' means to me. When I wrote postcards from India, if I mentioned home, it meant my grandmother's house because when I am in India, that is where I think of as my home - which might have been a bit confusing if reading the postcard.Home means different things when I am in India and Australia. When I am in India, I refer to home-in-Aus as 'in Perth' or 'in Australia'. I probably have but only rarely so [or maybe I just have a shit memory] referred to Perth as 'back home' when I am in India. It feels like some weird betrayal or something.

I’m such a fan that initially I only wanted the British versions of the books, so the first one I read was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I did this because I found it suspect that the publisher had changed the name for the US release to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, completely ignoring the alchemical history that the original title evoked. If they were going to change something like that, I reasoned, who knew what else they would change?

My mother is an adventurer like Indiana Jones who used to fangirl Cicho Buarque and Caetano Veloso as a pretty teen (I inherited her silver elbow-length Edie Sedgwick gloves): when she was just a teenager, she left her home continent to go to college far away. When she was there, she met a handsome white boy who wanted to go sit in fire towers in the US West like his hero Jack Kerouac (I still have some of his very old black turtlenecks and Park Service uniform shirts). They had an INS shotgun wedding. I was conceived on the honeymoon.

The protagonist of the book is a black teenager who wears her hair natural in a short kinky/coily afro. The cover photo shows a photograph of the protagonist...and she's white with long straight hair. AMAZING. By which I mean of course I want to vomit all over the place. The author is pissed off. The publisher is..claiming this is all part of a cunning plan.

You see it in the recent Avatar fail, but also in the way common and hidden knowledge plays out, in the way so many histories and stories are not lost, but deliberately destroyed or written out. You see it in how bits and pieces of culture are taken and assimilated, and how people using those pieces of culture do so with the assumption that they now know that entire culture. And when this lack of knowledge is combined with the belief in the right to know, we end up with people demanding explanations again and again, the repeated requests for academics to get into locked spaces so they can observe their subjects in the wild, the simultaneous asking for education even as the askers are hard at work denying all the answers they are given, with so many people wanting access without making ties to communities, without putting in any work.

Covers with cool but not stereotypical designs. Covers that demonstrate the diversity and richness that's already inside the text, or that reimagine white texts as more diverse, male-dominated texts as more feminist. This project should be centered on race, but I personally think we should pay attention to other issues with mass media representations as well, particularly the misrepresentations of beauty, weight, age, and gender-queerness, and that we shouldn't leave out reimaginings that are just plain fun.

Oh, there were a couple of comments about young black women being allowed to get laid, and in the later segment about gay liberation there were pictures, no spokesmen, of young gay black men, but most of the segment revolved around the film 100 Rifles, and how Jim Brown being allowed to act like a lover rather than a rapist with his white co-star was a bench mark.

Now and Rome: there were people of colour in the past, too! :: To say that a book is 'not racist' because it was written in the past and 'they didn't know any better' is to do history from the point of view of the oppressor to a really startling degree. Because, you know, who didn't know any better? White people who dehumanized black people, and profited from the dehumanization. The African slaves working on the sugar plantation which provides the basis for Jane's financial independence and therefore her successful/model marriage? They knew better.Getting people to think of racism solely as a diagnostic tool for ranking the goodness, rightness, and therefore authority/prestige, of white people, rather than as a system of violent oppression of people of colour: that must count as one of the biggest victories for the anti-civil-rights backlash.

The whole Gates debacle has convinced me that most white people are racists and don't know it. I'm a white person and I am more racist than I would like to think I am. "Racist" has become such a loaded word--it makes it very hard for people in the majority to admit to racism, sexism, classism or any of the other dirty little -isms that cause problems. Who wants to stand up and say, "I'm a homphobic, sexist, racist idiot?" It's not as bad as saying you eat babies, but its a lot worse than saying you don't recycle.

I mean…I love both my parents. And they both love me. But my relationships with them, and my relationships with the two different sides of my family are very different. My relationship with my mother is very different. And a big part of that relationship always comes back around to race.I don't want it that way; it certainly wasn't my choice to make it that way, but however it happened, much of the teenage battleground between me and my mother was fought on that field. Basically this is a proposal to cut import costs on books, which will probably lower the price of books and almost certainly knock some small presses out of business in Australia. Which would include the small Indigenous presses. I have written to the Government asking that they take the likely impact on small presses into account. Closing small Indigenous presses would mean fewer great books like Sally Morgan’s *My Place* (Fremantle Arts Press, 1987). It would mean losing great books to educate kids about Australia’s indigenous culture like *Aussie Toddlers Can* (Magabala, 2006).* It would mean losing a record of Australian experience, like Yami Lester’s autobiography (IAD Press, 1993). If not for books like *Yami* how would people know about the experiences of Western Desert people exposed to nuclear testing at Maralinga?

They would really like to play roles that do not involve terrorism. Us Middle Eastern people would like to see them play roles that do not involve terrorism. Why? The news is bad enough with portraying all Middle Eastern people as some bloc of terrorists, potential terrorists, and oppressed people what need saving by white people. I’ve no idea weather this is due to their being thrilled at the idea that they’ve identified another ethnicity or because some part of their lower brain pings at the mixture of physical traits so they feel the need to get clarity for their own peace of mind. Whatever the reason it’s never approached diplomatically. I’m not asked: I’m told. I’ve had people strike up conversations where they kept talking about what they thought was my country of origin, asking me to clarify some point about it that I as a native ought to know, I’ve had people ask me what said country they’ve assigned to me is like or how I managed adapt to living here (I’m British born and raised btw), I’ve had people ask what specific word would be in ‘my’ language, I’ve even on one occasion had someone approach me sprouting the language they had decided was my mothertongue (English is my first language just so you know).

oyceter: Wiscon 33: My Wiscon :: The women I grew up with—my mother, my grandmothers, my aunties—gave me many things, but they did not give me the tools to deal with issues of social justice. And although I love them dearly, the models they have to offer aren't very radical. I think it's pretty sad that it took me going to Wiscon, which is mostly white, to find other women of color whom I looked up to as role models, but that's what happened. And I'm grateful that even though the initial connections I made with people were online or at Wiscon, they have been moving offline and outside the con. I'm glad I've been able to talk with more people locally, to have discussions in email and on the phone and in person so I can work through things without having random white passerbys ogling at my mental processes.

He was a lawyer, a politician, an academic, and a staunch advocate of Māori advancement.During World War I, Āpirana Ngata was heavily involved in recruiting Māori volunteers for the New Zealand Army. That Pioneer Battalion though was pretty much limited to trench-digging and support roles. In the lead-up to World War II, he advocated for the formation of an all-Māori frontline unit. The Government finally agreed although they insisted on Pākehā in key roles, at least at first.

I don't want to be too distracted by attraction to treat people too differently in a non-sexual situation. If I notice someone as unusual and interesting because they are from a group I don't often see I don't want to keep them as an exotic pet in my mind if we are getting to know one another.So, should I be recruiting under-respresented groups into my sexual fantasies?

The belief seems to be that, in order to be truly politically correct, I must immediately go through my goblin books, rewriting the goblins as hygienically impaired, height challenged creatures with alternative dietary habits. (Actually, now I want to write a story about Veka demanding that the rest of the world describe her as a goblyn, but that’s a tangent.) The point is, people have waved their wands and cast reductio ad absurdium on the whole concept. We’ve turned it into a joke (perhaps because then it’s easier to ignore it, and we don’t have to actually do anything?)

It was supposedly in response to levels of child abuse found in some communities, but used a "one size fits all" approach, and implemented draconian measures such as income "quarantining", getting rid of the permit system in NE Arnhemland, and other bizarre actions that would not be accepted by any other segment of the Australian community without utter uproar and outrage.

sparkymonster: [IBARW] Identity and Being a Person of Color :: My identity is based on stories, food, shared experiences, and all the things that make up culture. It's also really *specific*. It's about being a black woman who lives in a city, but isn't "urban" in the sense of living in a city that is a center of black culture (i.e. Atlanta, D.C., NYC, Oakland, etc.). My identity isn't Southern, or Southern inflected. It's rooted in certain strains of intellectualism, and influenced by ideas of uplift and the talented tenth (with more problematizing of those ideas as I mature). It's about progressive politics, not Jack and Jill clubs. My identity is not influenced by the church, or by having a lot of church people in my life. It is also influenced by having a white non-American mother, and family who are accepting of all that means.

Cages, Vick, and Cherry " Vegans of Color :: The nail in the coffin for Vick was of course his abuse (murder/torture) of animals that Good people cuddled with, instead of the numerous animals that most of americans are cool with killing for pleasure (meat tasting so good and all). It was, of course, many of my fellow herbivores who went nuts with the racialized and brutal imagery.A 17 year old Black girl from the Bronx is going to jail. She did a horrible thing: baking a cat (yet again if only it had been a chicken). Everyone really dislikes her because Cherry also isn’t remorseful. Do I find it strange that a woman from Levittown would travel to the Bronx to watch a Black person (”monster”) sentenced to prison as if it were an event for celebration. Nope, it actually seems quite in character.

yasaman: And This Is Why I'm Just Going to Watch Little Mosque on the Prairie Now :: I am an Afghan-American woman who is keenly aware of my privileges here in the United States as a young, middle-class, educated woman who passes for white. My family left Afghanistan by the skin of their teeth, and there are not so many what-ifs and may-have-beens separating me from being a woman facing the possibility of being stoned to death. So a joke about what happens to Afghan women in the war-torn, still Taliban-influenced country of my people is so far from fucking funny, I can't even. That one little joke threw me out of the movie like I'd been catapulted out with extreme prejudice because my experiences and my knowledge and my ethnicity made it personal. I couldn't keep watching the movie because I'd just been reminded, glaringly, THIS MOVIE IS NOT FOR YOU. YOU MIGHT AS WELL NOT EXIST AS AN AUDIENCE MEMBER, BECAUSE WE TOTES DID NOT EVEN CONSIDER HOW THIS JOKE MIGHT FLY FOR AFGHANS OR MUSLIMS IN THE AUDIENCE, AND WE DO NOT CARE.

It's about being able to see our reality instead of the ugly lies that pass as the stereotype of the week. So yes, while it is a TV show, it isn't *just* a TV show. They say money is the root of all evil, and I suppose that's technically true. But racism is the toxin in the water flowing over those roots and unless and until we manage to purify the stream, evil has more than a toe hold in this world.

And I wonder why.If you grow up in Germany, it's unavoidable (as it should be) that sooner or later you hear about the Holocaust. I'm not sure how many years we spent in school learning about it, about our guilt even so we were born decades after the war. And it was the right thing to do because we should never forget about it and try everything we can that it won't happen again.But I digress. It seems that three decades before WW II and the Holocaust, people were killed in German South-West Africa (now Namibia). Enough people to call it a genocide.

lady_ganesh: Meet Usagi Yojimbo: It's International Blog Against Racism week! :: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans may remember long-eared ronin rabbit Minamoto Usagi from some episodes or issues, but Usagi Yojimbo, as Stan Sakai's flagship comic is titled, is a kickass canon in its own right. Based (extremely!) loosely on the life of famous swordsman and Book of Five Rings author Minamoto Musashi (Usagi is Japanese for rabbit), it's witty, dramatic, sharp and beautifully drawn and lettered. (Stan has lettered Groo the Wanderer for more years than I'd care to count.) There's almost nothing bad that can be said about this comic, seriously; the beautifully developed characters, the meticulously detailed setting, the amazing linework... I have thought for many years it's one of the best Western comics around, and-- perhaps even more remarkably-- the quality has remained consistent.

We need to remember that we are operating in a global community and that what we are saying may be misheard. But more importantly, I think, we need to remember that we may well be mishearing what we are reading. We need to be cautious of latching onto what seems to us to be racist language and accusing the writer of racist intent. We need to be cautious of making judgments about people whose culture and society are not our own. That's not to say we shouldn't ever challenge one another, but that we should make sure that we have taken the time and trouble to hear and understand first. We should, I think, adopt a hermeneutic of charity, not suspicion.

Even more unfortunate is that she has to hide everything that makes her herself from her mother to stave off the threat of hospitalization for mental illness. I hear tell that the last time Ms. Hopkinson came to Readercon, she ended up sharing her signing slot with Samuel R. Delany. This made it look like "here we will stick the black authors together because obviously they must have so much in common and have all the same fans". (I have been told, and believe, that this came about due to a combination of scheduling convenience and failure to predict the in-hindsight-quite-predictable problem; no malice, but carelessness can be just as bad.) Given this unhappy experience, I'm very glad she's agreed to come back, and as a freshly minted member of the programming committee, I'd like to suggest some panels designed around her and her work that are nuanced and thoughtful and have no semblance of tokenism or ghettoization, both because those panels are more interesting and to demonstrate that some clue has been acquired in the intervening years.

afterthree: International Blog Against Racism Week :: Justine Larbalestier has posted on her blog regarding the white-washed US cover of her book, Liar, which features a black female protagonist. She talks about how she fought against the cover, but ultimately lost the battle because authors have very little control over the covers of their books. Publishers pick a cover they think will sell, and right now the publishing and retail worlds believe books with faces on them sell better unless those faces are black ones. Larbalestier draws the connection between marketing dollars and black faces, saying "I have found few examples of books with a person of colour on the cover that have had the full weight of a publishing house behind them ... all we can say is that poorly publicised books with "black covers" don’t sell [which] is usually true of poorly publicised books with "white covers"." She then wonders if "the big publishing houses really only in the business of selling books to white people" and I can't help but agree with her.

How to participate:

Announce the week in your blog.

How Can You Help?

I need people to help compile links to posts. In 2007, there were four of us and about 500 posts; in 2008, there were about 250 posts. I have no idea what the volume for this year will be. Each person will basically take a day, put up a post in the ibarw comm, then tag links in the IBARW del.icio.us. If there aren't enough people to do one day/week, we'll rotate. We'll also keep track of requests to retag posts in case something is tagged wrong. Also, if you can read a language that isn't English, that would also be really useful for tagging non-English posts.

If you're not American by self-definition, I would really, really, really appreciate a post or posts from you, as the "international" part of IBARW is very important. Extra love and appreciation if you aren't from an English-speaking country/nationality. Posts in non-English languages are also very welcome!

I especially need volunteers for this this year; I'm a little short on mental health resources and won't be able to do much outreach.

I know the dates are squashed between a lot of summer conventions, which I apologize for. Please do let me know if they overlap with major holidays though!

The completely optional theme is global. I'd particularly love entries on race and racism from a global perspective, on post-colonialism, on the aftereffects of imperialism, on grassroots movements coming out of the Global South, and etc.

Entries in non-English languages are especially appreciated!

oyceter and I have been talking for a while about using ibarw for a weekly newsletter collecting posts about sf/f, fandom, and race. rydra_wong has graciously given us permission to replicate her RaceFail09/Great Cultural Appropriation Debate of DOOM 2009 in the IBARW delicious account, and jinian and kate_nepveu have begun testing a script that will autopost delicious bookmarks here.

What we still need:
Volunteers who will set a consistent newsletter gathering and tagging policy, and who will take responsibility for gathering and tagging relevant posts.

Diversity 2009

I'm posting this late in the conversation, for which I apologize.

Although mac_stone has stepped down from diversity2009, the project is still one that I would not associate IBARW with, for the following reasons (please follow the links back, because the people writing there have much more eloquent and better fleshed-out arguments than I do):

It is impossible to separate the community and the specific effort from the context and background from which it originated, and asking people to do so, particularly when they have had to put up with as many insults and condescension as Willow has, is dishonest and unfair and hurtful.

Looking at the origins of the project shows that it assumes other groups in SF/F have been doing nothing, particularly other anti-racist groups, since this started out in an argument about racism. This is particularly galling, given Willow's commitment to social justice both in her own blog (linked above) and in her leadership in projects such as (but not limited to) the POC in SF Carnival.

Most importantly: this is not an individual instance. This is part of a pattern*.

These links are taken largely from the feminist movement, because that's the one I know best, but this co-opting, this lack of outreach, this constant re-writing of the narrative to ignore POC activities in favor of those started by white people is not new, to this community of SF/F fandom or to more communities than I can count. And it is not right.

This is not to say that a project similar to this one is futile. But for one to succeed, it must come from people who can prove their commitment to social justice and from people willing to work with—bottom up, not top down—the very communities they want to help.

* eta: To clarify, I am specifically singling out my own failure to engage in outreach and IBARW's origin as a project largely unaware of other POC efforts.

POC in SF Carnival, IBARW3 edition

IBARW3 ran from August 4 through August 10 in 2008 and had a total of 236 tagged posts, 209 of which had content (i.e. were not just announcement-only posts). This is down from last year, which had around 500 some posts, but around the same level as IBARW1. On the other hand, the percentage of nonwhite people/POC posting is growing, from roughly 25% in IBARW1 to roughly 35% in IBARW2 to roughly 50% in IBARW3. The numbers are very loose, since the way we tag means one post can be by.multiracial.people, by.nonwhite.people and by.poc, or a combination thereof, depending on the preference of the individual poster.

Even though the numbers are imprecise and collected in less-than-rigorous circumstances, I run them because otherwise, perception skews things.

Up until now, I was a little disappointed that IBARW3 had substantially fewer posts; I know the effort I put in was less than the past two years, thanks to real-life chaos, and I was worried that lack of dedication from me affected the turn-out. I'm not sure if fewer posts are indicative of my own failure, of general burn-out, of the perception that IBARW isn't necessary, or a combination of the above and even more reasons. But I am glad to see the percentage of nonwhite people/POC posting going up every year.

In terms of numerically unsubstantiated trends, I saw fewer "this is the story of how I learned racism existed and how it made me feel," more posts that went deeper, and fewer posts examining whiteness. I don't think examining whiteness in and of itself is bad—in fact, it's often necessary—but it also shouldn't be the dominating subject. And setting the optional theme of "intersectionality" meant a plethora of awesome posts on the subject.

For IBARW4, I'd like to increase the number of non-English posts and increase the number of posts about non-US countries, with a particular focus on non-"Western" countries. This was my goal for IBARW3 as well, though not a successful one. There's also a noticeable lack of posts by Latin@s, as there was in the past two years; I need to do more outreach.

The following links are my favorites from this year, and as such, are a little idiosyncratic. I went less for generalized posts on racism and discourse on racism and more for posts that really looked into specific problems or issues. This is not to make a value judgment on generalized posts on racism or posts on discourse on racism, since I find both extremely helpful and useful, but more of an attempt to differentiate this carnival edition from last year's, which had more of the general posts.

Intersectionality

Intersectionality was this year's optional theme because many of us are not easily carved into parts, and so, racism affects our other oppressions and vice versa. Wikipedia has a definition and history of the term, along with a longer explanation.

(in)visibilities: race and trans* - issues and situations trans people of various races must deal with

Black feminisms and queer/trans politics/alliness - I'm not sure how to summarize this because it covers so many topics and issues, but that's precisely why I like it

Fatness and Uplift: Not a Post about Push-Up Bras - because being black interacts with fatphobia and because the fat-acceptance movement should not be all white

Feminism: All of Us? - why feminism needs to incorporate intersectionality

The All Black Issue of Vogue - women of color in the fashion industry don't sell? Especially black women? I hope the fashion industry is taking notes on this, because god knows we could see ourselves more in the media.

Why, NOW, Why? - in which we go back a little to see why "intersectionality" was coined, and why it's still necessary

Violence Against First Nations Women in Canada - as the poster says, talk about it. Pay attention. Notice whose stories are being told and whose stories aren't.

Renee Montoya is a heroine - and she should have been in the movie.

How Not to Hit on Me - I feel this speaks for itself ;)

Women of Color and Beauty Carnival - this isn't part of IBARW, but it debuted during IBARW and has so much excellent stuff in it that I want to drive more people there.

IBARW, Jewishness, and Intersectionality - last year, many people posted about anti-Semitism and its relationship to racism and IBARW; I was glad to see more discussion come out this year. There aren't that many comments to this post yet, but I hope there'll be more.

You can't order justice for one
Where you stand with intersectionality is really about what you're looking for- are you looking for social justice for all of us? Or are you just looking for someone to pull their foot off your neck, without worrying about whose necks you may be standing on yourself?

Internationality

Last year I noted that I didn't want "international" to mean "everything but the US" but couldn't think of a better term. This year, I still can't think of a better term, although this section is now specifically to highlight the critique of IBARW as "International Blog Against Racism Week." logovo1 is right; the English-centricity of IBARW should not be the norm.

My food is not exotic because it's different from your food, it's just my food. And it's not ethnic because that doesn't mean what you think it means. I have enough trouble trying to work out how to incorporate the old food superstitions into my life as it is: I don't need to feel like some sort of foreign novelty whilst I'm doing it. So do me a favour and mind your language.

Proud to be White?
As I noted in a post awhile back, uncovering the history of racial oppression and privilege is an asymmetrical process that has an asymmetrical effect in the present depending upon one’s standpoint.These sorts of exercises, if followed to the logical conclusion, would have us believe that if we are “proud to be white” just as people of color are “proud to be black” or “proud to be Latina,” then we will all have moved away from racism and toward racial harmony. I don’t agree.

Last year, I forgot to link to 50books_poc, a community dedicated to reading 50 books by POC in a year, although each individual who takes up the challenge has her/his own way. This year, Skin Coloured, a site dedicated to photographing "skin" tone products on non-white people, started up.

Also, this year, IBARW ran through August 6, the day the US dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Hiroshima, Japan, August 6, 1945 has information on how nuclear testing disproportionately affects nonwhite people/POC.

Hi all!

Any suggestions, brainstorming, or critique for IBARW4 is extremely welcome! I particularly want to focus on the "international" aspect of IBARW next year and encourage posting on more non-US and/or non-Western countries and in non-English languages.

Technical critique is also very helpful; how does del.icio.us work for people? Is there another format we should consider?
