Last chance to save a man's life

Troy Davis was convicted of murdering a Georgia police officer in 1991. Nearly two decades later, Davis remains on death row — even though the case against him has fallen apart.

The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony which contained inconsistencies even at the time of the trial. Since then, all but two of the state's non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony.

Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced by police into testifying or signing statements against Troy Davis.

One of the two witnesses who has not recanted his testimony is Sylvester "Red" Coles — the principle alternative suspect, according to the defense, against whom there is new evidence implicating him as the gunman. Nine individuals have signed affidavits implicating Sylvester Coles.

Georgia's State Board of Pardons and Paroles has recently rejected Troy Davis' clemency petition. Troy continues to face execution on Wednesday Sept. 21 at 7 pm EDT (midnight Weds night UK time). Please take action before this time.

We cannot let an innocent man die.

Please take these two simple actions - asking the Parole Board to reconsider (they can change their mind at any time), and asking that Chatham County (Savannah) District Attorney Larry Chisolm step in and withdraw the death warrant.

Take action here
http://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/siteapps/advocacy/ActionItem.aspx?c=6oJCLQPAJiJUG&b=6645049&aid=516533&msource=W1109EADP04D&tr=y&auid=9522344
and here
http://action.amnesty.org.uk/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=1194&ea.campaign.id=12137&utm_source=social&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=deathpenalty&utm_content=newtroyactionfb

We can't let them kill an innocent man. This really is Troy's last chance.

Thank you for your support.

UPDATE: THE PAROLE BOARD ARE BLOCKING AMNESTY'S EMAILS, BUT YOU CAN STILL TAKE ACTION
Please forward the email below to the Parole Board at

Clemency_Information@pap.state.ga.us
and
Webmaster@pap.state.ga.us

Feel free to personalise the text or change the title of the email. We must keep the pressure on the Board, and let them know that the world is watching. Executing Troy would be an outrageous travesty against justice.
----------

Please grant Troy Davis clemency

State Board
Pardons and Paroles webmaster
2 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive
SE Suite 458
East Tower
30334-4909 Atlanta
USA
GEORGIA

Dear Clemency Board members,

I call on the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles to take all steps necessary to ensure that Troy Anthony Davis is not executed.

You have voted to deny him clemency despite the fact that significant doubts continue to plague his conviction. You must reconsider and reverse this decision immediately.

Seven of the nine witnesses have changed their story and no physical evidence links Davis to the crime. No one should be executed, especially when there are so many doubts about guilt.

This case has generated widespread attention because so many people in Georgia and throughout the world are disturbed by the thought of a man being executed when so
much doubt about his guilt remains unresolved.

Nothing can undermine public faith in a criminal justice system faster than an execution when there are still serious doubts about guilt.

Georgia cannot afford to make such a mistake, and I urge you to do everything in your power to prevent this injustice from taking place.

Yours sincerely,

[YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS/EMAIL]

Georgian shot down escaping people; the wounded were shot through the head. Only a few people survived. Russian soldiers helped us to get out of it.
Now my mother and I are going to Mozdok region, which is in Ossetia. We don’t know anything about my brother.
Hello

I don't think this is against any of the rules, but if it is, I sincerely apologize.

My name is Erin and I'm a 29 year old woman suffering from two painful and at times, life-threatening neurological disorders. I am currently ineligible for receive Medicaid benefits in my state because I'm not pregnant and have no children. I have applied for SSI/SSDI, but was denied. I am in the appeals process with an attorney who seems confident the initial decision will get over-turned, he just doesn't know how long it's going to take.

I will need to have a total of 2-4 surgeries to correct my disorders and my neurosurgeon has advised the first one needs to happen as soon as possible. However, because my life isn't in danger at this exact moment in time, they will not do the surgery without a deposit, ranging from 1500-5000 US dollars. I spent a lot of time thinking how to address this issue, because my family doesn't have the resources to help me out. My best friend has promised to find the money one way or another, but I have a really hard time accepting charity.

I've started this kind of crazy idea, called Project Download. There's a community for it, with the incredibly unoriginal name of projectdownload. There are several posts there, giving information about my conditions, why I've started this project and most importantly, an entry where multiple people have commented to assure the masses this isn't a scam or an attempt to infect everyone's computer with a virus.

Being part of Project Download quite literally only involves one or two minutes of your day. I'm asking you to at least come check the community out, read through the posts, get an idea of who I am and what I'm doing. There are links available to prove this is all very real and very serious.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and if you choose to, for deciding to become part of Project Download

Warm wishes to you all,
Erin

In my world history class we're learning about Africa:

http://www.invisiblechildren.com/

I feel its neccesary to do something about it. I feel horrible buying designer purses when people are starving and having to put up with war as a daily thing. On the website you can watch a video these college boys made(the whole site is actually run by a group of college kids) and it shows drawings 10 year olds are doing where they are showing their family members being shot by army men in their own country.

To help you can buy a bracelet. They're only 20 dollars cash money. I bought the Red one for Emmy Maybe you'll feel good about it.

Also, If you're wondering how this relates to fashion. I consider Africa a really inspiring continent. Not just in the way they dress, but their overall attitude. :)

Lawrence Rossin, Refugees International Executive Director Kenneth Bacon, and Public and International Law and Policy Group senior attorney Amjad Atallah. Since Sunday, when they arrived in Khartoum, Governor Richardson and the delegation have visited Darfur and participated in a variety of meetings with government officials, rebel leaders, humanitarian officials, AU commanders and UN officials.

The promises from President Bashir in this agreement are encouraging. They include commitments to:

A 60-day ceasefire with an international peace summit to be held before March 15, 2007.

Sudan's cooperation to work with the African Union and United Nations on the deployment of a hybrid peacekeeping force in Darfur.

Ensuring "zero tolerance" policies for gender-based violence in Darfur.

Free access for humanitarian aid workers and journalists.

Click here to read the full joint statement and the press release.

Your concerns for the people of Darfur were voiced directly to President Bashir by Governor Richardson and Ambassador Rossin. We believe that today's agreement offers a promising step forward to end this four-year nightmare for the people of Darfur. By no means, however, has the genocide ended.

We call urgently upon Sudan, the United Nations, the African Union, and the Bush Administration to make these promises become a reality for the long-suffering people of Darfur.

We must demand that the international community take advantage of this dramatic progress. Your help in this effort will be vital in the months ahead.

Thank you for your contribution to these new developments.

Best regards,

David Rubenstein
Save Darfur Coalition

The Save Darfur Coalition is an alliance of over 175 faith-based, advocacy and humanitarian organizations whose mission is to raise public awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur and to mobilize a unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of more than two million people in the Darfur region. I was furious when I learend (before) that the UN finally agreed to deploy troops, but then weren't able to because the president of Sudan (Omar al-Bashir) wouldn't agree to it. Anyways, just wanted to let you guys know. Oh, and if you haven't already- join STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur), it's a really good way to get together and organize ways to help Darfur. Also, subscribe to the mailing list @ http://www.savedarfur.org. And the IRC mailing list (internation refugee committee @ http://www.theirc.org/

And one more thing- there's a really good book (and documentary) out about Darfur called: Darfur Diaries: Stories of Survival by Jen Marlowe, Aisha Bain, Adam Shapiro, and Paul Rusesabagina. The same people who wrote the book made the documentary called Darfur Diaries: Message From Home.

-Jamie
P.S- I forgot to add that this "cease-fire" doesn't mean that the genocide is over, we still must work to ensure that the organizations (AU, UN, international community) to follow what they've promised and to stop the genocide AND help repair the IDP's, villages, education, children, rape victims, malnourished persons, etc. Apparently there's also problems with the "rebels" refusing to cooperate (I'm guessing the SPLA/SLA/DLA, etc.) http://www.onelocalnews.com/akronfarmreport/ViewArticle.aspx?id=42852&source=2</div>

Smith
recounted to me how dangerous this particular journey felt.

"Upon leaving Peshawar, we had arranged for a Pakistani Army escort into
the Khyber District because I wanted to get some footage of the Tirah
valley, where Bin Laden is said to have gone after fleeing Tora Bora.
But the guards at the border wouldn't let me in. 'Too dangerous,' they
said, 'even with military escort. The insurgents are walking around with
rocket launchers now.'"

Much of the dramatic rise in fighting inside Afghanistan can be traced
back to the Pakistani territories where the Taliban tribal 'cousins'
live, and the question of what to do about them has put Musharraf in a
tough position. The Americans and their coalition partners want him to
crack down and seal the border. But Musharraf, an unelected military
ruler, derives some of his political support from religious parties who
are strong in these territories and who are sympathetic to the Taliban,
if not Al Qaeda.

Smith, who found another means for reporting inside the tribal areas,
demonstrates how difficult the situation is and the reason for the big
huddle in the White House. With a sanctuary in Pakistan, the Taliban and
Al Qaeda are not only returning to Afghanistan but appear to be moving
well beyond. Several recent Al Qaeda plots abroad have been linked to
the tribal areas, and authorities in London are also investigating
possible connections in the plot to down 10 transatlantic airliners.
Ancient culture

You all are constantly crying on Great, peaceful Muslim culture - especially on the Iranian one. You are the same constantly repeating that it was that great and ancient, that these people must be allowed anything....
Well, was not the Italian culture great too? for centuries the very Italian masters determined the trends of both music and other arts, painting, sculpture and so on. Saying nothing on the Christian religious life of Europe.
So that culture was great without any doubts.
A lot of Italians took part in emigration to the USA. No wonder they formed close tight societies in Bronx and other spots of American Cities. A lot of them were combatants from the poorest Italian district - Sicily. They had certain traditions, they were close related and hence soon they got «regulating» the American business life. Their had formed MAFIA, Cosa Nostra.
Would you like to live that time and to obey them? State bodies spent dozens years fighting with their influence. Nobody was even one word recalling the great Italian Culture as well as ancient folk rural tradition (Sicily was the rural area - to remind you a hint) - just as you are doing now with Iran.
And THEY were part of European culture too! So how would you regard their methods?

The Euronews sercice claims its self as the main European news resource. I wonder if its true - for its awfully biased if not just liar. I watched it in Moscow. When they were suddenly mentioned any Russian events - I knew it was false. Then recently they had been caught «by hand» - on editing video reports on Lebanon crises in order to enforce Israel army savageness. They had apologized, then about one week the news got more or less appropriate. That lasted about one week. Then everything was back again.
If this is the main European news service then no wonder the Hezbollah is not regarded by you as the terrorist organization. Look, and what about the German Nazies - how would you consider them? They were quite political party, they won highly democratic elections, by the way. You, the Europeans, are repeating now the mistake of Chamberlain. I suppose he considered him self highly wise and well-foreseeing, providing the Great Britain with long-term peace whiled signing the Munich Treaty in the 1938.
The German leader of that time strongly reminded Mahmud Achmadilijan, the Iranian one... He was son of highly cultured nation too. His name started with H, there were t and l in the middle and it finished r. Try to guess!
That treaty brought a lot of peaceful events to Europe. No, I’m not wishing you to trace the same scenario - I’m just pointing at the similar features. He was the eminent anti-Semite too. So go on - it’s all up to you after all!

Hello. My name is Melanie. I have a friend in Uganda who's in prison because he wasn't able to afford the hospital bills for his recently deceased sister Gladys, who died of AIDS and left a small child behind. He owes $350, which includes the hospital bills and court fees. He endures beatings in prison and only eats once a day, sometimes with stones in his food. Uganda prisons can be very harsh and they have been cited as violating human rights.

I started a Myspage page which I'm going to be updating more over the next few days. Here's the link: http://groups.myspace.com/savestephen

If any of you can help, here's the donation link. I would appreciate any help we can get. No amount is too small.

Thank you!

x-posted

-Good evening, sirs. May I enter?
- Oh, come in, sit among us by the fireplacre
-Oh, what a nice change over the frosty windy night outside!
May you move your armchair aside for a bit, please?
Oh, thanks, so could i sit down?
Oh, that would be just great to get a bit of Porto to warm me up after this storm outside.
- Your porto is just excellent one! Oh, it’is from the Tajo valley, is it? It must be rather expensive one then...
Not very, you say? And how much?150 pounds only? ... My monthly salary... but it’s nice indeed...

The important comment for somuhow.... people

That’s just my fantasy on some stranger entering your circle. Actually I wonder if you’d offer him any Porto - especially if it were limited.
Yours is such a «highbrows»’ society, so authentic because of your own self-confidence and well-being... And self-charmed by all those inflated words about Changes, alternatives, human rights and so on...
I got understanding suiside-bombers’ of low level - those of the executors - motives now....
Go on casting the spells, may be that would help....The comments for somewhout lout peeople: Porto is a kind of Portuguese wine, which was highly appreciated by British landlords and other aritoctrats. I supposed it to be known by any developed person.
My post was just the example of a kind of RPG reflecting the general attitude of the most of those European pathetic speakers. I have already learnd that they woud do nothing to proove their resomant words.
If the Porto were limited and they had ever experienced this limit befor - I doubt they would offer a bit of this expencive wine to the stranger. Certgainly they may offer some, sure, but the cheasper and more usual one.

here is Innovative way of Conflict solving.
If a pattern of any conflict is regarded it would typically consist of A and B - Conflict subjects, competing over C - conflict object. That may be either some resource (including the territory resource) or Ideology. The latter is both subject and object of a conflict. In its turn it affects the subjects behavior, deepening the conflict.
Earlier only military pressure on either A or B was regarded as the only way of conflict solving. However by now any more-or-less large-scale conflicts got impossible and too dangerous. The main modern enemy - terrorism has neither territory, nor regular army. And then we all are accepting the Human Rights Convention statements, aren’t we?
So, it’s time to regard the Innovative way of conflict solving. If neither A nor B can be eliminated, how their attitude towards D could be changed? Their position changing would mean the conflict solving too, would it not? This position changing could be achieved trough wider public enlightenment program. Simultaneously it would limit liberal individualism flowering which cause the main problem currently. It’s obvious that all the wishes of a person can’t be met. The problem is to teach one autoregulate them.
Other ways of conflict solving, such as meeting one of the objects’ needs with the help of any International Humanitarian Aid Organization could temporarily mitigate the conflict, but without changes in Conflict subjects psychology through propaganda and education it would not solve it finally. Later it could repeat.,
/lg-cut>
I woud appreciate your reasonable critics on it.

'Democracy' Never Meant What People Think It Means

'Democracy' as such is invariably traced to the Greeks, specifically to classical Athens. Typically it is translated as 'rule' or 'leadership of the people,' with the root 'demos' being rendered as "people" and the second root 'kratos' being rendered as 'rule' or leadership.'

In fact, while 'demos' came to mean 'the people,' it originally referred (as in Homer) to those who collectively controlled a territorial unit, specifically, to the aristocratic warband that surrounded a Mycenean king or chieftain. In other words, 'demos' refers not to the people as a whole, but to the army. Which of course, is fitting, because the voting citizenry of the Athenian democracy consisted solely of the men of the army, the propertied men who could afford the full panoply of the hoplite infantryman.

As for 'kratos,' the rendering 'rule' or 'leadership' softens its actual meaning, which is 'power' or 'force' (specifically, force of arms).

In a literal sense, therefore, 'democracy' ultimately means 'the (coercive) power of the army.'

Not much has changed, really.

----------

Well now you know, and knowing is half the battle (thanks, G.I. Laeth)!

I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I have a friend in Uganda who is in a government prison b/c he was not able to pay for his deceased sister's hospital bills. She died of AIDS. He has been barely making enough money to pay the rent and school fees and is now left in charge of his dead sister's child. Is there any way I can raise the money to help him pay the bill? He needs $350 and I need to know how I can raise this money as I don't have that kind of money to send at this point. Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Probably x-posted
