So does Claude. I love him best when he breaks free of trappings like the (Disney) story and becomes real. A man walking in the park, enjoying the wind in his hair. Pulling his scarf tighter around his neck, even though the wool is scratchy against his skin. He loves that scarf, because it was a gift.

Yes, I HAVE been busy. With work. With travel. But also with these two ;-)

“Are you afraid of me?” Frollo’s air came as a gust of hot air against her face. His eyes were hooded as he searched her face.

Esmeralda searched for an appropriate answer. She looked at Frollo’s face, mapping the tired lines that ran across his features, telltale signs of age and living a harsh, unkind life. She focused on his mouth, bracketed as it was by those deep lines. A face that all in all, looked as if it collected frowns for a hobby. The stubble on his chin made him look even older, unkempt. And yet there was something magnetic about his appearance, even as disheveled as he was.

“No.” The answer surprised her too, but there it was. “I’m not. ” Frollo swayed a little, looking as if he was drunk on her bold reply.

He licked his dry lips. Searched her face again. Finally his eyes landed on her mouth.

“I am.” He whispered. He exhaled against her skin again, and Esmeralda shivered.

“I’m terrified of what I’ll allow myself to be when I am near you…”

It was as unlikely a friendship as one would find, between the scientist who dabbled in the occult and the grim, straight-laced High Judge of Paris.

Yet, When Ja'far ibn Umar ibn Battuta, all of eighteen years old, pulled a frightened for his life sixteen year old Claude Frollo de Tirechappe into a dank alleyway in Constantinople, to protect him from the horde of thiefs in eager pursuit, differences were overcome, and a bond for life was forged.

From there on, it was a short step to invite himself and his new found "brother-in-all-but-blood" into the soft perfumed laps of the harem of Sultan Muhammed ibn Muhammed. Needless to say, they both learned a lot in those months.

And now, wizened, and a lot older ( one more than the other, such was the cruel price one payed for having power) , Claude Frollo found himself one more in the company of his old friend. Ja'far. Trickster. Astronomer. Scientist. Him and that wretched bird of his. ( "I will have you cooked in dates and olive oil, if you don't stop that infernal shrieking right now!")

And thus they spent their days in the sultanate of Aggrabah. Where Frollo was well aware of how Ja'far was secretly courting the Sultan's daughter. Of how, when she entertained herself with that tiger, ( "I gave her that beast!"), Ja'far's yellow eyes would follow her every move. And where he also noticed how Princess Jasmine played his friend. Fool.

His friend had laughed at his warnings. "One of these days, 'sadeek', not soon, but still, you will meet a woman, proud and strong. And from that point on?" Here Frollo had scoffed in reply, but his friend moved on, unfazed. "The rest of the world will seize to matter."

And he winked at Princess Jasmine. And Jasmine smiled, turned and swiveled her hips, just so.
