House of Kerry established in 2016 offers timeless exquisite silk scarves, designed by print artist, designer, Christine de Vries in her studio at the foothills of mountains and on the shores of a Lough Guitane Muckross Co. Kerry, Ireland. The scarves are printed in limited runs at a small family run state of the art facility near Lake Como, Italy. Since its inception, House of Kerry has paid homage to nature and the planet by the careful use of resources and by working only with ethical suppliers. In addition, attention to detail in the hand rolled hems of the scarves makes them coveted heirloom pieces which can be passed on to the next generation.

“In her latest scarf collection “Nature, encore!” Christine using hand drawn gouache, watercolours and ink paintings and mixed media again pays homage to nature to produce an eclectic collection of prints. She draws her inspiration from the magic of the wilderness and places she has visited in the past. “Nature, encore!” celebrates the joy nature brings in its effortless ability to perform –nature is the greatest show on earth! Christine expresses it in the details – be it the magic of a cactus in bloom, Grand Canyon, the beautiful stature of a “wild” horse at Rossbeigh, the wondrous butterflies of Igazu falls, the epic journey of swallows or the crackling pieces of a glacier, Patagonia. The “Nine White Deer” scarf pays homage to the story of St. Gobnait, a healer and the patron saint of beekeeping. The native red deer of Killarney inspired the artwork of the scarf. The Skellig Sanctuary scarf is inspired by Sceilig Mhichíl 6th Century monastic site and home to the endangered puffins who take refuge there. During the many lockdowns over the past couple of years nature has been our sanctuary. Let’s keep connecting with nature and minding it!

Scarves are a great way to elevate your basic wardrobe and pops of colour are great mood boosters.

House of Kerry will show its collections at Showcase Ireland, online platform and RDS Dublin, on February 27th 2022.”

House of Kerry’s new printed and woven collections by artist/designer Christine O’de Vries “We Share the Same Sky” are inspired by current events and the idea of the sky as the planet’s heirloom with us having a shared responsibility to look after it. We live and work in different towns, cities and fields, we have different dreams but we share the same sky. In an attempt to look at the bigger picture, Christine has included fabrics celebrating the work of mostly women hand weavers from different parts of the globe. Fabrics chosen not only for their beauty and heirloom qualities but because the crops were grown organically or little use of chemicals are required and also because social goals and good working conditions are supported. A report from the UN on Rural’s Womens’ Day 2020 shows that women and particularly in rural areas throughout the world have been most affected by the Covid 19 pandemic and and this also underpins the collection.

https://www.un.org/en/observances/rural-women-day

The cut and style of the pieces are a gentle nod to the 1940’s and the liberating fashion style of post World War II, inspired by Christine’s discovery of an old notebook, now a treasured heirloom, kept by her grandaunt Bridget O’Donoghue, a nurse in London during WW2. The notebook is a little bible in sustainability where she noted her salary and kept track of personal items from luxuries to essentials with a trend for swopping and lending items among her circle of friends, self care too was an important part of the day to day even in surreal times.

Scalloped edges make an appearance too a playful nod to Kerry’s blue flag beaches on the Wild Atlantic Way and which Bridget must have been looking forward to visit when back home. Rossbeigh, Derrynane, Banna, Ballinskelligs and Inch are some of our favourite haunts.

One piece in particular directly inspired by the notebook is the “Paddington to Killarney” trenchcoat named after a “train” ticket Bridget bought noting “My ticket from Paddington to to Killarney alone cost me £4.1.8”. The trenchcoat is a timeless piece in Irish linen hemp union, woven by Master Weavers in Irish Linen. The colors are in Breton blue and oyster and woven into the warp and weft is Christine’s hand drawn watercolor landscape painting design of “Cill Áirne”, (Killarney in Irish) and meaning “Church of the sloes”. It is in toile du jouy style from her original “Cill Áirne” scarf design. A timeless piece, the trenchcoat has wonderful scalloped hems including the front and back panel.

Christine’s vision is to create sophisticated, feminine and timeless pieces with understated style. The collection made to uplift and celebrate strong women includes a limited edition scarf collection and wearable art pieces made to order including 2 trench coats, two piece ensembles with flattering sculpted peplum detail, woolen beret and printed dresses with her own designs.

Grace Claro interviews Christine O’Donoghue de Vries, a former UCC Law graduate turned award winning sustainable artist designer and the woman behind House of Kerry

For this month’s issue, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Kerry based artist and award-winning designer Christine O’Donoghue de Vries. She is the creator of House of Kerry, a nature inspired and sustainability-focused Irish designer brand, located in scenic Muckross, Killarney, County Kerry. Christine is no stranger to UCC, having graduated with an honours degree in Law and French here in the university. Eventually practising as a barrister, she worked in a wide range of fields from asylum seekers to criminal law and general litigation.

However, after several years in the legal profession, Christine felt her passion for art and photography guiding her back to her native Kerry. She returned home, took several part time art courses to hone in on her skills, and in 2016 she established House of Kerry, officially launching at the Glucksman Art Gallery’s Craft and Design Fair. It is no surprise that during the preparations for the photoshoot Christine expressed her delight at our invitation to collaborate with Motley and the Glucksman, stating that the space has a special significance for her.

Art

As a sustainably certified farmer, Christine’s practice is inspired by the indigenous landscape of her native Kerry. She also spoke of the importance of art-historical points of reference in her design process, citing Georgia O’Keefe’s and Salvador Dalí’s as key figures.

Christine uses all her own artwork in her designs, namely her own fine art photographs. With the help of CAD technology, images of the land are rendered in a dreamily subtle haze, fused with blushes of watercolour paint and cursive inscriptions. She says her work begins as an artistic concept that is then injected with functionality and made into ‘wearable art.’

Sustainability

With an ethos of cherishing the environment, Christine’s process of creating the designs for her collections is slow, mindful and considered. All the fabrics she uses are either naturally derived like silk and cotton or upcycled vintage. Striving to avoid waste, she makes use of her off-cuts and leftover materials and upcycles them into bowties and woollen berets.

Furthermore, she re-purposes seemingly unconventional materials such as silage netting by using dyes and assorted embellishments such as Swarovski crystals. Once the design process is complete, Christine sends her finished prototypes to be brought to life by local tailors. She spoke of her unwillingness to outsource this crucial work to a factory abroad, as she was concerned for both the ethical and environmental issues that would arise.

Achievements

Since its genesis in 2016 House of Kerry has received numerous awards and nominations in Ireland. She was also a finalist in the RDS Craft Awards 2017 for her silk scarf the ‘Magic of the Skellig Ring’, which was also exhibited at the Dublin Horse Show 2017. Christine won the HI Style Fashion Designer of the Year Award in 2018 as well as Fashion Designer of the Year Award 2019 at the Rose of Tralee International Festival. She is registered with the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland.

House of Kerry fuses contemporary art and design with the awe-inspiring natural architecture of the land in order to create mesmerizing and wearable fashion. During my time working with Christine it was encouraging to see a person dedicate themselves to sustainability whilst creating an innately Irish visual aesthetic, making ‘fashionable art’ out of it. House of Kerry is putting sustainable conscience and indigenous natural heritage centre stage in contemporary Irish design.

A former barrister who returned home to County Kerry and pursued a new career as a sustainable artist and fashion designer has celebrated a year of award-winning success.

Christine O’Donoghue de Vries, a graduate of UCC School of Law and the King’s Inns, founded House of Kerry in 2016, drawing inspiration from her upbringing at Muckross in Killarney.

Last year ended with “an amazing experience” for Ms de Vries after she was named fashion designer of the year at the Rose of Tralee International Festival, she told Irish Legal News.

Over a decade before launching the House of Kerry brand, Ms de Vries practised as a barrister, starting off in criminal law and asylum law before moving onto employment law and general practice.

“Looking back, I suppose I wanted to help people in unjust circumstances and wanted to contribute positively to society,” she said.

But Ms de Vries eventually decided to leave the law after moving back to her native Kerry.

“I had always been very creative when I was younger and decided to develop this side,” she said. “That and the pull back home to the farm I grew up in, as well as starting a family, meant leaving the law behind.”

By the end of 2016, Ms de Vries had launched House of Kerry at The Glucksman in UCC.

Pieces designed by Christine O’Donoghue de Vries/House of Kerry modelled by Candice (Upfront Model Management).

Reflecting on how her upbringing has influenced her work, Ms de Vries said: “The old Irish farmhouse is a model of sustainability. The land is worked and food produced for the table and my grandmother was a maker – creating everything from the furniture to clothes.

“In a similar vein then, House of Kerry has a sustainable ethos, using only natural and upcycled fabrics and using spare cut-offs to produce headbands and bowties.”

Ms de Vries creates designs from her own artwork, “influenced by old world painters such as Van Gogh and contemporary artists like Georgia O’Keeffe” and inspired by the farmhouse in her family for generations, as well as the landscape of Kerry and wider Irish culture and heritage.

Working as an artist while also managing the House of Kerry business is “a challenge”, she admitted, but compared the experience to her time as a lawyer.

“It’s a lot like trying to find time to research a technical point in the law for a case on the horizon when you’ve been busy in court all week!

“I keep a journal and when ideas come I sketch and I keep adding to the concept from time to time. Then when I have some clear time I plough through a new creation.”

The effort appears to be paying off. Besides her award win last year, House of Kerry was recently selected by a panel of national and international judges for Design Ireland, which highlights the best Irish design and craft in association with the Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI).

As for other lawyers who are considering following in her shoes, Ms de Vries counselled: “A journey into the art world is a journey.

“You need to give yourself time to develop a style and then build a business as well. Taking part-time courses, as well as talking to creatives, would be worthwhile before leaving the law.”

I can’t believe that summer has escaped us yet again and the scramble for school crests and sizing uniforms is upon us! Reminiscing now on the highlights of my summer on the farm and my creating world….

There lives a little boy in House of Kerry who has a pet lamb. Throughout the summer the little boy fed his pet lamb milk and the lamb grew quite big! The lamb followed him everywhere.

The little boy worried about his lamb being alone especially when he returned to school. The little boy had a plan. The boy’s mam created beautiful scarves inspired by the Irish landscape and our heritage – one of them was a special scarf called “the Magic of the Skellig Ring”. It was made of silk and contained a watercolour painting of traditional striped fields hemmed in by hand built stone walls against the backdrop of the Atlantic coast and Blasket Islands. It shimmered in the light. The little boy knew the Skellig Ring well as he had often visited there with his parents and young sister.

The little boy heard that far away in Dublin, in the RDS, the magic scarf had been chosen for display and put in a glass case to protect its special qualities and so everyone from near and far away lands could see it. One day, the little boy took the magic scarf with all the colours of his landscape and whispered in the lamb’s ear “wear the Magic of the Skellig Ring” scarf, it has special powers and it will keep you safe always and when I am not there….” The lamb was delighted and the scarf blended back in with the colours and patterns of the landscape.
