Will sell bodyparts for books.

For the random people out there reading this, I just felt like sharing that I book budget. That is to say, I very rarely go into a bookstore and just wander out with an impulse buy anymore. Those days are long gone. ~oh happy days of yore~

What brought this share-y thought on was that I recently re-did my wishlist for books/manga/graphic novels (after the original file corrupted. Oh how I cried.) and the total amount (at bookdepository prices) eventually came to $1,206.83. (Believe me, I had a little eye-bug-out moment myself)

That... that would get me overseas. That would get me some furniture. That would get me a little less in debt on my mortgage. But instead I budget around slowly whittling this pile of want down to something a little less eyebrow-rise worthy.

.......I just felt like sharing that. (I'm not sharing about the dvd list of want... it's just as scary.)

Side note: I have anew tumblr as my regular one is set up in my brain for no reblogs of lolita, superheroes, fanciful art, etc. http://guidedbywhimsy.tumblr.com/

The Legend of Korraisomgsogreatgawd!

Alright, so... The Legend of Korra.

I just started watching this through on Monday after deliberately holding off until the first season was over. Three episodes to go tonight and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Bouncing around in my seat with excited squeals actually. It seems to have been aimed at a slightly older audience then AtlA originally was, which is nice (I wonder if it’s from a learning curve company execs had discovering AtlA’s original fanbase age range...) and I adore Korra. She’s such a feisty, blast of fresh air.

Anyway, one character in particular among the new Team Avatar got me thinking. Asami. When I first saw her I got an itchy feeling that she had an unseen plan going on under the surface. To that end I can’t help but feel that the animators/writers had done everything they could to enhance that uncomfortable feeling. For example, Asami’s drawn in a way that the majority of animators use for vampy, scheming lady characters. Thinner eyes, dark/noticable makeup, confident attitude and elegantly proportioned. It’s a stereotype I’m used to seeing on the schemers and I can’t help but wonder if the style was done on purpose to play up to that. When I see how she’s drawn and, having been ingrained to therefore think she will act a certain way, every sideways glance becomes suspect. Was that innocent or was it a subtle hint of things to come?

By episode five I was sure she was scheming something and had made up my mind to watch her carefully. By episode nine I’ve gotten to see more of Asami and found to my pleasant surprise that she’s actually a really kick ass lady that escapes the stereotype that I thought might have plagued her. I really quite like her and want things to go well for her. But... I can’t help but wonder if the writers/animators are still hinting at coming bad things. I no longer worry she’s scheming now, but I do worry that she’ll be drawn into a scheme. Please don’t do this, I love how she is destroying stereotypes with how she is, I think I’ll cry if bad things happen. But then again, I sort've trust these people to do so in a way that will break my brain in a good way.

Sideways idea: Asami cosplay... hmmmm. That jacket is awfully cute.

Fannish gushing: Mako, you’re in the middle of a triangle that normally makes me cringe and back away... but I don't dislike how anyone involved is acting. Gah. Which makes me happy to really like Mako.

Oh god, three episodes to go tonight and then such a wait for season two! I have such a feeling that all my rambles here are going to be destroyed. Gah!

.

Superheroes Return To My Life

So this last month(s) have been spent trawling through information and fanfic/art for DC comics. Young Justice (tv) has a lot to answer for. (cassu_bean, you’re also partly to blame. Why you enable fans with love for superheroes? XD)

Wally, I am intrigued by your Flash-ness.

Roy, why yes, you are sexy and have a very different back story in comic-verse that makes me want to know you more.

Dick, yeah well, Nightwing/Robin has always been my favourite DC-er, no hiding that little fact. My old love for you is still going strong. Mwah.

But!.... seriously DC, five Robins? I was stuck on three, thinking Tim was the last one. Bruce, you are confirming my thoughts that you have more issues than the average bat.

I LEARN MY DC HISTORY FROM UNBIASED AND TECHNICALLY PERFECT PLACES.

<a href="http://JBadgr.deviantart.com/art/Comic-Robin-History-Part-I-139728138"
160¥ is all you need to go on the "squishiest subway ever" ride. I managed to have my bag squished in between two salarymen, so I could not move to a more viable position... if that had even been an option. My left hand was smooshed up to a guys butt, my left breast was acting as a buffer to another guy as we all swayed in time to the subway car and I was taking mental bets with myself as to whether or not I would get a black eye from being butted in the face by the back of another guys bald head.
'Twas an experience!

Japan - Day One.

First day in Japan today and the three travelling taureans have just got back to our hostel. We have just gotten back from eating out (ramen for a yummy full tummy) and then raiding the local supermarket and convinience store. Emma made the find of the day with tomato chocolate. D:
K, I thought you'd find it funny that the first place we're staying at is called 'K's House'. XD
Currently drinking 'chocolat milk tea' and have a honey sandwich saved for a fast breakfast.
Hoping to climb Mt. Fuji tommorrow. It poured down with rain earlier today and we can see Fuji-san from here, it's covered in snow. Brrrr! very, very cold.

This is really just a quick test to see how updates go when playing around with my new tablet. Weeeee!

Now the problem is I'm not too sure how to get some video or music files onto here ('here' being the tablet, not this post), which I would like to figure out before leaving tomorrow. :-) (oh look, the little keypad has a key for a smiley face!)

Urg, still need to pack. Pretty sure I have everything that I need, I just need to transfer them to my bag and plan it all out there rather than in my head.

Posted via LiveJournal app for Android.

This is the original entry I was going to put on my tumblr... but it really got too~ long. Still, I did want to have my little rage-vent somewhere, so I've just transplanted the majority of it over to here. ^_^v

AND ETERNITY by Piers Anthony

This book has not aged well and unfortunately there is a lot that offends me written within.
Firstly, I'm trying not to get into a rage about how the cover portrays the three key characters, but it's really hard. You can see it up there, two angelic blonde haired, beautiful white women are standing, covered in floor length white/cream draped dresses and holy, radiant beams of light illuminating them from behind. Both women are looking up/out/away from the reader with reverent looks upon their faces. Reading the book reveals these to be Jolie & Orlene, two relatively (but not completely) free from sin ghosts.

The other girl is dark haired and darker skinned, sitting on the ground slightly away from the other two, dressed in black, lacy, scant clothes staring straight out at the reader with a suggestive look, lips a deep red and one hand brought up to play with the necklace hanging around her neck. The book reveals her to be Vita, a 15year old ¼ black ¾ white (I’m a bit vague on this, I can’t remember the exact ethnicity break up of her parents since after the initial intro she’s only referred to as ‘black’) sexually abused runaway prostitute, addicted to drugs.

... okay, I did rage. Granted, this rage is more at the cover artist since I know that authors usually don’t end up getting a lot of say in those things. But at the same time, Piers Anthony has extensively stated in his notes that he likes having control over his works and has taken steps to make sure he remains in control of his creative works when that control has slipped, so I have a hard time believing he had no input into the cover whatsoever, even if it was only a ‘yeah that’s fine’ don’t care input.

If it was a comedy, poking fun at such stereotypes I wouldn’t cared so much, but it’s a serious portrayal of the characters. Just... rage.

Next, the juvenile idolisation of Vita. I was having trouble figuring out how to label this. It’s not outright pedobearing, as Vita’s character is stated as 15yrs old, a bit too old to be pedobait and old enough to be aware. But the narration portrays her as such a young, immature thing, oh so sexy, sexual and appealing to men. Granted she plays up to that since her pimp tells her too, she likes to think she knows what to do to make men all hot and bothered for her, and that’s flash them ‘young flesh’. But after the prostitution is done with, the labelling doesn’t let up. Throughout the novel she’s referred to as being young, juvenile, a nymphette and of ‘young flesh’. She speaks with youthful slang, peppering her talk with words like “gee” and actually, that would often be her only input to the conversation, “Gee”. She may be a mid-teen, but I felt she was characterised to be similar to Lolita.

This next problem actually got to me throughout the entire series, but really came to a head in this novel. Beauty is, according to the characters in the book, all about youth. Men wax poetic about the youthful beauty of girls. Middle aged to older women often acknowledge that their youth and beauty are gone, so they will never again be as perfect as they once were (and then admit to having their stubbornness and intelligence to get them through the rest of their lives, but they always are wistful for that perfect, youthful beauty they have forever lost). And NOT ONE WOMAN is ever more beautiful than they were when they were young. It’s not pointed out or commented upon, but it shows in the lack of action/narration. There are quite a few older women characters, and none are described as beautiful, rather as “middle aged women who may have been beautiful in their youth, but had since lost that shine”. Wtf?! Maybe it’s because I’m no longer in that ‘perfect stage of youth’ anymore and yet feel more beautiful in my more mature age than I did as a teen that this grinds at me so much.

I don’t want to say it’s an invalid argument. Some people are more beautiful in their youth and some women do bemoan the loss of their ‘youthful beauty’, but holy crap could it not be portrayed as the only way women and men think? (Which in turn portrays it as the only way women and men must think. Arg!)

Oh, and the onus is on the woman to not get raped. One of the precursors of the oncoming WW3 in this book was overpopulation, what I’m going to assume was one of the hot topics of the day when this book was written. The main characters are given the task of finding a solution. Not once does the male author have the female characters think of sharing the ‘problems/solutions’ with men. In fact I believe if I paraphrase one comment it was said “it’s not like we can get all the girls in the world to shut their legs until they’re married and settled”. Never is it brought up that men are not entitled to sex whenever and with whomever they want, nor that they share responsibility for a woman getting pregnant. In fact every man (yes every one, I can’t manage to name a single one, even among the ‘heroic’ side) is shown to be a creature of his sexual lusts for female flesh, even if he holds them back, keeps them secret, they are still there.
...
.......rage face! If anything, I start getting angry at not just the sexual portrayal of the women, but also of the men. It's degrading to them both.

The book itself covers at least four rapes/attempted rapes. The first two are Jolie and Orlene who are transformed into masculine form and then seek to rape the nearest female form. We the readers, are told that Nox, incarnation of night and female, did this to show Orlene and Jolie how men fall prey to their uncontrollable lust and how women should be understanding of that. Men can only be good and control such sexual deviance because they have had years growing up with it as part of their nature. Jolie and Orlene, with no time to acclimate to their masculine passions immediately give in. Should I mention that Nox diffuses the situation not by turning them back to their original feminine forms or calming their minds (which I’m going to assume an incarnation as powerful as Nox is touted to be could do) but by gently allowing them both to rape her? Thought not.
...
........ rage face!

The third deals with Vita’s rape by her father. PA does not shy away from Vita’s normal reactions of hurt, ‘maybe it was it my fault’, pain and anger and also goes to put in Jolie and Orlene’s shock and disgust at Vita’s father in how he could betray his daughter like that, which I do like as it’s realistic, but the advice the two more mature ghosts give her? Don’t talk about it so as not to cause undue hurt to her family and they’ll quietly move her father away so she never has to see him again. And later they condone her next sexual relationship because as long as she’s in love it’s okay. The fact that he’s a middle aged judge (who was dealing with her case) with a self-confessed severely repressed secret desire for very young women doesn’t matter. Again, this could be seen as realistic, but I dislike that this information is coming from the two mature, older/wiser figures in Vita’s life. It gives it a “this is what you should do in such a situation, dear reader” tone.

I don’t know if I have enough rage faces for this continual wtf-ery.

The last rape attempt is... I don’t know if I can calmly cover it properly. A young (black) girl wants to be considered an adult by her domineering mother. Young girl has friends who have had babies out of wedlock and sees them as much more mature then her because they’ve had sex. Young girl sneaks out to go to a dance and maybe pick up a guy. Vita, Orlene and Jolie manage to make sure she isn’t picked up by a skeevy white guy who wants sex in payment for getting her into the dance. Young girl is then abducted by psychopath who sees all women as whores to be used and killed. Long narrative happens explaining why psychopath is a psychopath due to horrible childhood. Vita, Orlene and Jolie manage to get girl out of situation again, leaving psychopath behind to bleed to death from accidental crotch stabbing and making sure to not leave any of her clothes or blood behind to prove she was there. The advice given to young girl? Sneak back into your house, pretend none of this ever happened, hope you think twice before sneaking out to a dance again. Her reply paraphrased? “I’m never leaving home again!”. Vita, Orlene and Jolie think this is good and leave happy.

...What? Why the hell should she confine herself? Why no responsibility on the men here? Just... rarglearg!

-le sigh-  I think I need to stop now.  There are more things to the book, more bad and some good too (it’s not honestly all bad), but this has become such a long entry.  O.o;;;

Finishing on a happy moment: Satan calling out the other incarnations on their BS when voting on who to raise to office of the incarnation of good, aka God.
Stolen from Cass's Tumblr.  I have this weird dislike of reblogging things onto my tumblr, but at the same time, I don't think I can interact with other peoples posts unless I do this?  (2/3/12  I feel like an idiot.  I just noticed the 'reply' button.  XD)  Nor do I really want to have multiple tumblr accounts.  Sooooo, until I work something out, I repost the interesting stuff here.  ^_^;;;;;

TO MY LEFT: My stereo, which plays the fun music that I need to have playing. (can't stand a quiet, morgue house.)
INTERPRETATION: Workin' it with the sound. Sonic screams, hypnotic speech, could sing a four part harmony by myself & great voice (Barry Manilow!!) impersonations. Yup, I could deal with this.
Let's add to it. So it's pointing to my stereo, a piece of electrical equipment. The boundaries are that I can't use this cool power unless I am using some sort of electical/man-made equipment to focus them through. (Does this mean my identifying weapon is a pimped out, tech-ed up megaphone? XD Nah, I'd prefer some sort of stealth com. like you see commandos use.)

TO MY RIGHT: The telephone!
INTERPRETATION: So I need to use electrical equipment to focus my powers, why would a telephone muck that up? Maybe conflicting electronic voices. Which basically means anyone in todays world could use my kryptonite against me. Urg, don't like that, I end up pretty durn useless!

Anyone else got interpretations or ideas?

Young Justice

Soooooo, just watched the first episode of Young Justice.

I really didn't have any intention in watching it, but I kept seeing people squeal happily about it. Eventually my interest was piqued and I gave in and watched. This seems to be a good method, since that's also how I discovered Avatar. Is YJ as good? Well, I'm only one episode in yet (double parter so a decent length at least) and I quite enjoyed. Probably made better as I always seemed to prefer a lot of the 'sidekicks' in the DCU. (Batman? Pft, gimme Robin or Nightwing anyday)

In any case, I'll be happily watching more.

... and from a purely fannish angle, phoar Aqualad's hot.

The Phantom Menace - 3D

There seems to be all this mad blather of absolute glee about the Phantom Menace coming out in 3D the February and seeing it all across the internet it just made me go wtf? Seriously, I am not a fan of the 'first' three movies and I did not get it. To me, Star Wars doesn't really start until Episode IV. And it was fairly much agreed upon from the fans and non-fans alike when the other three came out that they were... not as good as had been hoped.

Really, I'm not excited at all about the first three coming out again in 3D. I barely even remember the plot lines of two and three. If and when A New Hope goes 3D, then I'll get truly excited (going to a midnight showing with ticket held tightly in my sweaty hand and a feral gleam to my eyes kind of excited) but not before that.

So with the general disregard the majority held for the first three movies, I had to ask "why?" was all the blithe glee happening for the 3D? It wasn't until I came across an entry on tumblr that explained it as happy nostalgia. Did this person think the movie was brilliant? No, but was it the first (omg!) Star Wars film they had ever seen. Also, first Star Wars film seen on the big screen. And it was this that led them to the rest of the Star Wars universe where they fell hard and fast in fannish love.

O.o!!

That... that just seems so ODD to me. That the Phantom Menace was someones 'first' and could be seen through such rose tinted, nostalgic glasses. It just... didn't everyone watch the original three on VHS first? You know, when they were about five or six? (or about seven or eight like me, because I couldn't like the same things as my brother when I was younger then that....)

Personally, I did manage to see the original trilogy on the big screen. Not when it first came out, I'm not that old yet, but when Lucas remastered and re-released it my family did a movie pilgrimage. We're all SW nerds.

Reading about the fact that TPM had been some peoples first introduction to Star Wars, it really made me think about what a new generation of Star Wars fans there are out there now. Seriously, their version of VHS is DVD. Their version of SW: A New Hope is SW: The Phantom Menace. It just boggles my brain.

Goosh.

Still not excited for Episode One 3D, but have a new perspective on the hype some have built up about it.

So I finally managed to make myself get off my butt and sign up with a gym again. Woo!

Went for the first time today. Timed it so there wouldn't be a lot of people there as I floated around getting used to where the equipment all was. This ended up being a positive as I had major malfunctions in figuring out how to GET OUT the freaking DOOR! Little swipey-thing, why were you all the way over at the desk and not at the door itself?

In any case, it was only a half hour to fourty-five minute workout max as I was bumbling along and by the time I got to the last third of my old regular work out I was starting to feel really nautious. Either it was the fact that I went with only having eaten breakfast that morning and my stomach was protesting or the fact that I worked out harder then my body has had to in the past year. (It also could be a combination of the two....) Looking to make it the whole way tommorrow, but eating small lunch first and maybe toning down on some of the weights.

I is proud!

Language & Movies

‎"So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys - to woo women - and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do."

—

Dead Poets Society, 1989

Spotted someone quoting this on Tumblr. (I seem to be losing hours on there.) It was a quote that jumped off the screen and spoke in my ear. It said "Listen, remember and think".

Certainly something to put into thoughtful use when writing next.

....

I watched Dead Poets Society long ago for english in high school. I remember thinking it was a brilliant film and have it firmly placed in my memory as one of the films that I enjoyed, would recomend to others and never, ever want to watch again. My heart, my head, they could not take it. (Other films that fall into this category are Pan's Labyrinth and Forest Gump.)

2011, Year In Review

End of year meme. Take the first sentence/s of the first post for each month and compile them into a single post. Ignore quiz/meme posts.

January
So for AIcon this year I figured I'd cosplay as Nico Robin. About two months to go so it's probably about time to start getting myself put together.

February
Borrowed some manga from shoujo85 and managed to put some thoughts together coherently on a few of them to the point a writing little mini-reviews.

March
And I feel just so damn relieved. (This was a locked post.)

April
Went and saw powerplant with <span class="ljuser i-ljuser i-ljuser-type-P " Flip, I did no posts during my birthday month. This is a shocker!

June
Turn up the heaters, winter's hit.

July
Okay, so this is pretty much going to be a photo post of doom. and most within days of each other) and somehow I managed to come back with over 380 photos of a four day holiday.

August
Soooo, I'm going to be doing the 30 day lolita thingy-goo inspired after seeing 's collected post.

September
There, a totally ominous title for the post that actually means not what it first looks like. Huzzah.

October
It's a very simple system really. Everything that's important goes in a box throughout the year. When tax is due to be done I go through the box and throw everything that isn't important but has still managed to end up in the box onto the kitchen floor.

November
I now have a tumblr account.
Superheroes!

Having a bit of a giggle fit as I've only just discovered that DC has a superhero that hails from Tas, and not surprisingly has the not imaginative name of the Tasmanian Devil.

So a shapeshifter by the name of Hugh Dawkins apparently. (Apparently? Just look at the dude!)
.... Hmmmmm.
While I'm all "Bwahahaha! Superhero from my state!" I also have the knee jerk reaction of "Tasmanian Devil? Again?" Really people, there are more then just devils here. I know they're cool and all, but it just seems that if anything comes from Tassie, sports team or superhero, they just have to be named 'Tasmanian Devil/s'. The only other option people tend to use is the Tiger. Bored of it now. (although will never be bored of a Tassie superhero in DC comics. Hee hee hee.)

How about a Quoll? XD

Nerding it up over Rictor.

The ricstar lj community is so much love. It gives me lovely previews of what's happening in X-Factor and other titles that they appear in while maintaining an overall maturity in conversation in regards to whatever is happening. And although, yes, it is primarily focused on Rictor and Shatterstar that doesn't stop decent, non-fanwank discussion happening in the com about any of the X-Factor characters. (or for that matter, simply comic events.)

Recent Marvel events have had X-Factor turning up in its big hoo-hah this year (or one of? They seem to be multiplying their big events) Children's Crusade. So....

Long story short, Wiccan finds Wanda, Wanda gets many a clue, Wanda repowers Rictor. Hell yeah!

But apparently Wanda did some really not-good things a while ago (M day? Avengers disassembled? I'm a little fuzzy on these.) and now that she's resurfaced all the Marvel heavy hitters are out for blood... and Ric just tells them to go sit in a corner. XD

To not-quite-quote what one com-member said "Rictor just told Marvels entire A-list to GTFO!"

Heh heh heh, I love it. If you look at the picture below and then imagine turning yourself 180 degrees, you'd see Ric facing down the X-men and the Avengers.... Zomg! Go Ric!

Click for 7 page preview

This may have the (not really) unfortunate ending of me buying the collection of Children's Crusade once it's all published. Hey, I already caved and started getting the recent X-Factor collections. (And am wondering if I should get season two, as it were, as well. I did love Havoks run.)

There, a totally ominous title for the post that actually means not what it first looks like. Huzzah.

Read the gals version of loli_secrets and had a bit of a shock. Wow they can be vicious. However, I'm reminded of my first reaction to loli_secrets, a post where I raged and declared I'd never be a "lolita" if that's what they were like. How embaressing. That particular post is now locked as private so I can learn from it in future and not spread the stupid around.

I don't think I'll be going back to gal secrets as they seemed at first glance to be more of a "I hate your (specific identfiable person) style, go die" which I personally find a bit hard to take, but I also know that the group is most probably not a good representation of the whole gal community and shouldn't be taken so seriously. (still, just wow.)

Second part of the title.... just finished watching the last episode of Natsume Yuujinchou San. Fell for the first series of the anime, adored the manga and let out a very fangirlish squee of joy when I discovered season three. So very sad to reach the end of it. Until... the very final second of it has Nyanko-sensei saying "look out for us in three months". Wha?? Seriously? Yay!!

..........

Just trawled through the anime database's calander and it looks like Natsume Yuujinchou Shi is coming out in January. Double yay! No mention of number of episodes yet, but since all the others have all been around the 13 range, I'm assuming this season will be as well. Wee, this will take me past what I've read in the manga. Ooooooh, what will happen. XD

Natsume's Book of Friends
