02. 2018 bestof_icons results!
I will cross-post this to my journal, since that's where all my icons were posted this year, but I felt it was time to update this journal with something this month. I'm sorry it wasn't a new icon post!
(Quick posting note: I've only made icons for one challenge that's already ended, one that won't end until the end of the month, and I'm currently working on a set of 10 for
itsabattlefield -- and for now I like them a lot?!)
I was part of
bestof_icons, and its activities for its 2018 cycle these past few months. Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate and/or vote for any of my icons! It was truly interesting learning what icons people liked the most. I am generally quite critical of what I make and can't choose which ones I'd like most, so reading the nice comments people made and all that was slightly overwhelming.
The winner is...

[+ 6 (top 13)]

I'm not sure if these would be my particular favorites but I do love them quite a bit! All of them were made for challenges because I don't seem to have the inspiration otherwise. A few words about all of them, from left to right...[comments on those]
As for my favorite icons of the year... gosh, I'm not even sure those I chose for my icon progression post were my favorites but I'm also fairly critical of what I make. I also like most of the nominations people made. 15 of them, in no particular order...

And a few of my favorite challenge entries: 56-60 from this post, makiiing10in30's Green (31-40 has most of the blue icons I made), histodramedy (I don't love all but I like the originality behind some), character20n20 - C.J. -- but honestly, I think I love some of my itsabattlefield stuff the most. The stuff for capchallenge in that first month is actually the most represented throughout.

Here's what the lovely people voted as the rest of the top 7 (anything that got more than 5 votes). I also included the next 6 (4 votes) under a spoiler tag because top 13 is usually a decent number in reality shows, ha.

- Saoirse: I just knew this one would win. It is simple but I could never reproduce it exactly. I was asked to remake this in one of the activities and had a hard time.
tv_movie_icons - placed 2nd. (Jan-Feb) - Karen: Pastels at
capicontest. I am still not good at pastels and this doesn't look like I wanted/hoped but people did like it. It's more on the muted side of things. I do love the crop a lot and I remember working on the details quite a bit. (Jan) - Alexis:
makiiing10in30 Color round. Loved the cap and wanted to do something with it. Background was a bit hard. (August?) - Evan Rachel Wood:
birthday_celebs - love the coloring and the crops. I wanted to make sure the colors from her hair, eyes and lips weren't washed out by something else. (July-Aug) - Contratiempo: For the Not English challenge at
elitesimplicity. Lots of texture work and coloring because the cap already had the negative space I would've added. (Nov-Dec) - Rey: This was a remade of another icon I had just made -- probably a reject for the 360deg challenge at
the7days (for left). I wanted it to be ~different, i.e. different colors, a different crop. I knew I wanted to add some text, too. I wanted to involve some text and do a different coloring to the pink one I ended up with before. I like the earthy tones and the 'I know all about waiting' quote. (Super late Dec) - Beth:
itsabattlefield - close crop for a short battle. I worked on the background a lot and then played lots and lots around with the 'makeup' and coloring. I was super happy with how it looks, the blues and the purple/pink. (Aug)

Some of these are fairly straightforward and simple, and I could've chosen many more of them (see the progression post, which has too many). I tried not to have much overlap with the top 7/13 (it's only missing the Karen icon and that's only because 16 was just too much). I think these show my perchant for colorful icons and my attempts at using lighting and different/plain backgrounds. I don't do them often but close crops are enjoyable.
