A Return to LJ

It's been very, very quiet around here. I didn't think my move to tumblr would end up being so all-encompassing, but it has been - not because I prefer tumblr as a fannish platform to LJ (I still don't!) but because some of the people I interact with on tumblr have also become real-life, close friends.

That's not to say I don't still regret the fandom-wide shift to tumblr - even allowing for all sorts of xkit extensions it's STILL harder to have a conversation on tumblr than it ever was on LJ. And now with the new update and people scrambling to make that complicated xkit script just in order to have a reply function, I've realised even more that LJ is still more suited to in-depth conversation.

So, with the old "be the change you want to see in ~~the world~~ the internet" in mind, I've decided to try and revive my trusty old LJ. I hope that there are still people around here; I will be advertising this post on my tumblr, as I do suspect that there are people among my followers who, like me, sort of regret not having the same community on LJ we used to have, but who've stopped using it because there's no one left to talk to.

We'll see how it goes, yeah?

I owe my flist:

- a life update (work, house, hobbies, relationships)
- a fannish update (what have I been watching, reading, writing, loving?)
- a renewed dedication to actually reading people's posts on LJ and replying to them the way I used to
- a more specific focus for LJ: more extended fannish (or rl) thoughts posts that will be more thought-out and edited than anything I write on tumblr (because while I enjoy tumblr's idiom from a linguistic pov, I miss actually writing things out properly. I could do that for tumblr, too, but maybe it's a good thing to have a separate way of doing things for my LJ.)

So here we go. :-)

Yuletide Letter

Dear Yuletide author!

I'm so pleased we've matched on something! It's my first time doing Yuletide, and I'm incredibly excited to see what you come up with. First off: whatever scenario you choose to write in whatever fandom you matched me on, I'll be truly happy. (There's a reason I went with “Any character” most times: I definitely mean it!)

But, in case you need some inspiration, feel free to use any of the ideas in this letter. I'll write a bit about why I chose the fandoms I did and the characters I did (if relevant).

- The Matrix: I am unbelievably fond of the worldbuilding in the Matrix Trilogy and of the complex ways memories and actions are handled (when is something real? If it happens to you in the Matrix, did it really happen? What do your old memories mean, after you've woken up?). My favourite of the films is definitely the first; I liked how Neo was not yet a fairly emotionless automaton at that point and that he was still struggling with his identity as The Chosen One and his growing feelings for Trinity. If you're into writing about that, I'd be incredibly pleased. Basically any exploration of the characters' backstories will make me very happy – what was it like for Morpheus, to look for Neo, ridiculed by most of the other Captains in Zion? What does the Oracle's world look like, how does she experience things? How did the Oracle's prophecy shape Trinity's life?

- Always Crashing in the Same Car: anything you will give me, I will gobble up. Any interaction between Jim and Bill, the tension between them, the guilt, the power play, the incredibly tight line they're walking. Mmmm. Sexual content is welcomed but absolutely not required if you're not into that.

- Sense8: the concept of shared consciousness is incredibly interesting to me, so I'd be thrilled if you're into writing about how the Sensates experience themselves vs the others, how their sense of self changes as they become aware of the cluster, what it adds/takes away to their senses, their thoughts, their dreams… I also really enjoy the way the show has given us a highly sensual conceptualisation of consciousness-sharing and the way most of the relationships have a sexual/sensual aspect. If you're comfortable writing about that, that'd be lovely.

- Pride: Jonathan and Gethin, together or apart, when they were younger or set during the events of the film (or later!) - whatever you do, I'll love it. I'd love an exploration of what happens between Gethin and his mother, what the influence of Jonathan's AIDS diagnosis is on their relationship, their friendship with the other characters, the pain of having to say goodbye to old friends who have AIDS.

- Rome: I'm most interested, to be honest, in the women's point of view; while the show does an okay job of incorporating the struggles of lower-class Roman women into its overarching narrative, I still feel that the male POV is very dominant. Both Niobe and Eirene have rocky histories with their husbands; what does this mean for them? Where do they find support, how do they try to better their lives? What's it like looking in from the outside, having no real power? Are they friends, or are they just thrown together by an unlucky coincidence? Is it possible for them to support each other or do they come from too different backgrounds? Of course, if you'd rather write about the friendship between Pullo and Vorenus, or focus on any of the characters on their own, that would also be lovely.

- Wolf Hall: both Anne Boleyn and Thomas Cromwell are very intricately rendered in the novel – nuanced, not ethically sound yet still fairly sympathetic, flawed, multi-faceted. I'd love a character study on Wolf Hall!Anne: she's hard to get a grasp on, as Cromwell doesn't quite understand her, and is always operating with his own agenda in mind. The role reversal could be fun: how does Anne see him, and how does she plan to use him to further her own cause? Cromwell considers them to be friends, to a certain extent; does she feel the same way? I'd also love more on Cromwell's relationship with Henry – and you could definitely choose to describe a different point in Henry's life, maybe even after the events of Bring up the Bodies.

These are some of the thoughts I have about the canons I chose; feel free to use any of it as an inspiration, or not to use it at all and do your own thing! I hope you have a great time writing, and I can't wait to virtually meet you after reveals :-)

I'm going on a little tumblr hiatus - just because despite my efforts to only follow people who are about squee rather than drama, sometimes stupid fandom wank still makes it onto my dash, and lately I've been finding it harder and harder to not care.

So, for my own sake, I'm just taking a little break. It likely won't be permanent, and it's an open question how long I'll keep it up, hah. But it'll be good for me either way, because maybe this'll force me to use my online time more productively (for writing, for instance).

I haven't read all of them yet, but the general quality seems to be very high. Someone remixed Daybreak into In the Land of Hope, there is no Winter and it's lovely, atmospheric and heart-breaking. <3 And there are genuinely a lot of awesome stories there; think I'll do a holmestice and sherlock_remix rec post after reveals. :-)
