» History: Neoptolemus was born in faintly odd circumstances.. Okay, that might be a bit of an understatement. He was the son of the great hero Achilles and the lovely princess Deidamia- born on Scyros before the start of that nasty Trojan war… When his parents were rumored to be either barely in or just before their teenage years; and when daddy happened to be disguised as a woman/girl called Pyrrha. This of course led to some severe head scratching when the pregnancy was discovered but it was soon dismissed and Neoptolemus (or Pyrrhus back then) had a fairly normal childhood.

Until daddy was finally found and dragged off to the Trojan war when Neoptolemus was still fairly young; a act which the young boy saw as a bit of a abandonment and got quite resentful about- especially considering that Neoptolemus cannot remember seeing his father in full health (AKA alive) ever again after that.

Instead of being taught by his father he was raised by his mother and her family to the cusp of manhood- as a prince it can be assumed since he was the son of a princess and the great Achilles. As a result he would’ve probably been taught all the arts needed to make a king and took to them fairly well- later he hid them but learning how to be a passable king was still an important part of his childhood.

So, he had a fairly peaceful childhood and a fairly peaceful adolescence; given his later personality he did have a few flings throughout his teenage years but none resulted in child and none led to a marriage; so things were fairly peaceful in the land of Neoptolemus throughout childhood… Until daddy had the bad fortune to get killed; soon after which Helenus related his prophecy about getting Heracles’s arrows, stealing the Palladium and grabbing Neoptolemus.

Of course the last part affected him.

So, off Odysseus went to Scyros to find Neoptolemus and tell him the news; and after a brief period of confusion (and perhaps a little bit of sulkiness, for he was only around his late teens then) he accepted and the two left together to fetch Philoctetes (the then owner of the arrows) and then head back to Troy- but soon the unfortunate Philoctetes was bitten by a snake and left behind.

Things become a tiny bit less clear here about Neoptolemus’s role in the fall of Troy but he was definitely there and it definitely contributed to his loss of innocence- the first act he was asked to do (by the ghost of his father, thanks dad) was the murder of the mainly innocent Polyxena and while he was still faintly reeling from that blow a prophecy was made about the young Astyanax and so Neoptolemus went to kill him too.

These two deaths permanently changed the young man and after them he went on to kill Priam and many others in the end of the war, until Troy finally heaved a last dust filled gasp and fell. After which he forced himself to harden fully; and took Andromache as a concubine and Helenus as a slave. Treating neither with complete and utter cruelty but still enslaving them and carrying them to the region of Eprius; where he settled down and started building cities.

It was at about that point that it was made known to him that he had been promised a wife by his father. Hermione, the daughter of Menelaus. Although initially sceptical about the promise (he already had a concubine and many willing girls to become lovers after all) he still went to see her and initially just to see… But while there he discovered that Hermione was actually quite pretty and would probably make quite a good wife.

So he took her as his wife, as simple as that in his eyes.

At first their marriage was hardly harmonious; but in time she started to soften to him and in return he started to soften towards her. In the end their marriage eventually grew into something a lot better than expected and a lot better than he would willingly admit to later. In fact there was only one thing in the way…

…Well, one big thing. The concubine.

Neoptolemus kept Andromache as his concubine for all those years after war and through their union three sons (Molossus, Pielus and Pergamus) were born- a fact that Hermione was evidently not all that happy about and that Neoptolemus somehow managed to ignore for the most part. This part of the tale does not involve him so much but in brief- when he was away Hermione created a plot to destroy Andromache through the use of her children to lure her. Only the timely arrival of Neoptolemus’s grandfather saved the day and prevented the bloodshed.

Of course, Neoptolemus hasn’t quite heard of that part yet. At the point where he’s taken from he’s on his way back home with little to no knowledge of his wife’s plots or his concubine’s near death experience. As far as he’s concerned he’s just happily travelling along, happily preparing to return home to a grateful wife and a beloved concubine…

And then he ends up in modern day New York. Bummer.

» Personality: First let’s start with the perceptions of Neoptolemus- mainly the perceptions of him as a unfeeling brute who loves only war and treats women with casual scorn; a man uncaring for anybody else and taking prizes as he sees fit. The main perception of Neoptolemus is that of the “savage brute” who will do anything in and away from war.

This, in part, is actually quite true- after his first two kills (both of innocents) Neoptolemus hardened himself against the realities of war and the showing of emotion. He forced himself to toughen against feeling deep emotion- as such, since he is often quite successful at this, he often comes off as uncaring and cruel. Willing to do whatever he wants to get what he wants.

This extends to all things, he is willing to murder to get what he wants, willing to manipulate emotionally and willing to take over through any means possible. Really he can be seen as quite selfish at times, no matter what anybody else thinks on the matter he will take and take until he is gorged and that is that. He can be very determined on the matter- if something that he really rather wants comes to his attention he shall go to any lengths to get it and shall focus on that thing intensely.

Another thing that he is very determined on is his desire for revenge; if anybody wrongs him, or one of the rare few that he truly cares about, he shall happily go for the throat. Neoptolemus’s idea of revenge does not just extend to eliminating the one thing that is bothering him; instead it spreads out to everything- if he perceives a person to have wronged him he will try his very hardest to destroy their life completely; to stick his fingers in every crack that they display and rip until there is nothing left. Whether he actually succeeds is another matter but he shall try his very hardest to gain revenge; through any means necessary.

Another factor to him is that even if he is not destroying somebodies life he loves to annoy; this perhaps relates to my later point about him having layers but it also contributes to his outer personality of generally not being a very nice person to know. He has a very sarcastic sense of humour does Neoptolemus; he likes picking up on the things that other people hide and commenting on them with extra comments thrown in. If he is given or finds a piece of information about most people he shall milk that information dry for his own amusement. He appears to take great happiness from other people suffering.

With all of this evidence: his determination to destroy people, his cruelty, his cruel sense of humour… Well, it’d be easy to assume that he was just a brute and nothing more. But no person can be just one thing alone- and Neoptolemus has hidden depths that he would rather hide from most.

He does feel guilt- and that which he chooses to feel he feels very deeply indeed. Polyxena and Astyanax filled him with guilt to the point where it deeply damaged him; he can barely function when he thinks of what he had to do to them and so he tries not to think of it. Guilt, at least on those two, eats him whole.

But on others? Well, after those two deaths he hardened himself considerably with others he feels little need for guilt and will take what he needs with feeling nothing for it. After his first two kills he felt little need for empathy for the others- this uncaring nature that he adopts towards some could lead to more enemies and more chance of dying.

Just as his crippling guilt over Polyxena and Astyanax could destroy him too.

Neoptolemus feels guilt over some killings, yes. But he has since hardened himself and… Well, he just really adores war utterly and completely at times. He likes bringing violence into a lot of things and it takes a special person or event to get him to be gentle. He is a soldier through and through and really rather adores fighting and killing and all the things around it. He is a very violent soul.

This also extends to his language, there are perhaps three people (his mama, Polyxena and Andromache) who he will not swear around unless severely provoked; everybody else is open to his wrath in all forms.

…And this is definitely a bad thing; leading to more enemies and also a tendency to sole his problems in the wrong way. Which really will not be good for some relationships.

He’s also not very good at letting go. When somebody wrongs him he tends to seek revenge and be very determined about it- to the point of attempting to destroy lives completely. He is very focused in his goal, coldly focused. Sometimes to the exclusion of all else. Which can’t be a good plan for life.

This also extends out to other areas- Neoptolemus can get focused on one particular thing and one thing only; he cares for little else. This, again, leaves him open to attack and weakens him. His tendency towards obsession could destroy other areas of his life rather quickly

This, perhaps, links into another problem - Neoptolemus has abandonment issues relating back to daddy, Achilles that is. He was young when Achilles left him and the way he saw it was as a abandonment- his daddy cared more about the war than he did for him. This coloured the young boy deeply and he still resents his father slightly for that- his father didn’t teach him how to be a man; his father didn’t appreciate him as an heir. All his father did was abandon him and his beloved mother.

Of course, then daddy died. And that meant that they couldn’t work through any issues and was considered another abandonment- especially since daddy’s final request was to kill an innocent woman and thus spoil Neoptolemus’s innocence forever. It isn’t that he hates the man but there is still some resentment there. Some anger at all Neoptolemus perceives him to have done.

Oh, and he does kind of regard his mother as a goddess and place her ever so high on a pedestal; in his eyes mama can do no wrong. It probably won’t come into play quite as much as the inner resentment of his father but it is still important to note.

Another thing about him is his loyalty; he is no happy idealist- one of his first acts in the outside world was the murder of an innocent and soon after he took a concubine by force (at least in the beginning.) But if you are good enough to win his respect… Well, he won’t throw down everything just to help you out in a fix but he’ll try to help even if he doesn’t succeed. He figures that it’s the thought that counts.

But the fact still is that he does care deeply about select people; he cares far too much. On the outside he will often project a front of caring nothing for anybody and, indeed, being fairly misogynistic towards women. But the truth is that he does respect women deep down; he sees no difference between them and men and tends to see them as people rather then objects. He will say that this relates back to the fact that all people can die if pressed but really it relates back to his loyalty for his mother; the one who mainly raised him in his eyes.

This does not stop him from maintaining a somewhat casual view on the subject of loyalty; his hidden regard for women is no guarantee that he will respect them. He may be more than a monster who just takes and takes deep down but he still is fairly selfish no matter what- and one of his main weaknesses is the need for women or, indeed, any companionship. He has a very high drive for that sort of thing and does not really care about anybody else or their views on the matter when it comes to intimacy; it is one of the places where he is most selfish. He will usually care a little for those that he chooses to bed (in fact, he did fall deeply in love with Hermione eventually) but it is usually still him first and foremost. It takes a very special kind of bond for him to forsake his own pleasure for another.

Another element to his sexuality (and perhaps one awkwardly relating back to his determination to destroy) is that he is mainly heterosexual but, tying into the determination to never let go, he shall do anything to get revenge on those he perceives to have wronged him. In his eyes sexuality is just another tool to achieve this- to get revenge he shall sleep with anybody. And he shall make sure that they enjoy it too. Or else the manipulation won’t work.

So, that’s Neoptolemus- still a soldier and slightly a brute but with hidden depths that many don’t usually get to see- it’d be humiliating to break after all; he isn’t completely mindless really. And, indeed, a lot of it can be considered just a show to protect himself.

» Sample Journal: Fuck this. No, really, fuck it – I was on a fucking road, on my way back home. And I expected to get home. Not be spirited off to some fairytale land where the women wear short skirts and everything appears to be too loud.

…Hm, perhaps it isn’t so bad after all.

No, no – it really is; Andromache will miss me, Hermione will miss me, Helenus will miss me – and I do hate to disappoint. I’m Neoptolemus, I conquered Troy – and I fucking demand to be returned home.

Believe me, you won’t like me if you don’t.

» Sample Roleplay: One moment ago, and it was a very nice moment too, Neoptolemus’ life was perfectly normal – wonderfully normal in fact. He was just drifting along the road, happily minding his own business, and thinking happy thoughts of home. It’d been a long time after all – and while business was fun (well, as much fun as business could be) he’d secretly rather missed home – missed Helenus and his humour, missed Andromache and her reluctant affection, missed his children and had even (shock, horror) missed his wife and the way he could make her smirk.

In short, even though he pretended to be a macho man (really, what other options were there?) Neoptolemus had missed everything about home, everything about the status quo. Ah, it’d be good to get back to normality…

And then he took another step, and ended up in a strange room with a strange floor beneath him.

…Well, shit.

He almost, and he really will punch anybody who laughs, fell over for a moment at the sudden shock of ending up in a whole new, and rather unwelcome, world – but in the end managed to gather himself. Purely for staring purposes, but he’ll lie if anybody asks and will fake bravery. You never get anywhere without bravery and bravado after all!

…You may, however, get to a strange place with a really, really strange floor with it though. He might have to reconsider the good of bravery.

Neoptolemus is used to change by now, is resigned to change – born in a royal court to two girls (well, technically), sent to Troy when he was only sixteen, sent back from Troy with a concubine and several murders under his belt at eighteen, forced to become a ruler, got married to a already engaged princess, mysteriously presented with three children… Well, life is full of change, life is practically bursting with it.

He’d still prefer a little less change though.

For one, long moment he just takes in the new world around him, and then decides to make a terribly profound comment, “what the fuck?”

Ah, isn’t life fun?
