A Very 2020 Christmas

Hi, friends.

Yesterday has come and gone and we are now in a post-2020 Christmas world. What a strange trip around the sun this has been so far! Christmas in the Llama Household was a quiet affair — and included four Star Wars films, three delayed packages for Noel, two family zooms, and a large deli tray of Wegmans meats. Overall a good day. The best gift I received was this wonderful patch that Noel got for me from Etsy. He said that he saw it and thought of me and my law school journey — he thought I could look at it and be reminded that I can do hard things. He's such a freaking gem.

This holiday season has been weird but I'm oddly okay with it all. I guess being an introvert has its advantages. The only thing I regret is not being more productive this past week while I've been on vacation. Hopefully, I can get some things accomplished this coming week. I really need to get a move on with redecorating my office and finally getting the house unpacked/organized. It's only been a year and a half since we moved in and we still have things in boxes. Does anyone want to come quarantine with us and make me do this? Noel is far too nice about everything. When I say I need a break, he'll let me take a break lol.

If you want to see what I'm thinking about when it comes to redecorating the office in particular, see this pinterest board. Yes, I am basic af and leaning into the whole mcm aesthetic — sue me. Add a hint of cottagecore and I'm in heaven. We'll see what actually ends up happening. I just really want a couch and a new desk set up prior to law school. And maybe an en suite refresh since the current en suite is ... rough. It's rough, yall.

Enough rambling for today. Noel wants to watch the new Try Guys without a recipe video (highly recommend this whole series). I hope you all are warm, cozy, and well. We're almost through 2020. While 2021 won't magically be better overnight, we can at least hope for a better year, right?

Christmas Lights

Has anyone else noticed that there seem to be more Christmas/holiday lights this year? Noel and I did a drive around a nearby neighborhood and it felt like there were more houses decorated than last year. I guess everyone needs a little more jolly this year — whatever form that jolly takes.

Speaking of jolly, I'm making Christmas cookies this year for my neighbors. Our townhouse shares a little courtyard with three other houses. We're pretty good friends with one of the families. They have lived in their house for almost 10 years and are the unofficial leaders of our part of the street. Their kids are ADORABLE. They are really the neighbors you dream of having, tbh. The other two families we just don't know as well. But everyone is getting cookies! Life is too short to not pass around cookies. I'm making Taylor Swift's version of chai cookies with eggnog icing (and some without egg nog icing for those who are wrong and don't like egg nog) and some fancy sugar cookies with sprinkles baked in. Simple but festive.

We made it, friends. We have officially entered 2013 without any major catastrophes. It's a miracle.

I spent NYE on my couch in my pjs with my boyfriend. It was simple and lovely. It was nice to have a holiday that was just ours. No obligations other than be clothed enough to answer the door when Danny's Chinese delivered our food.

As for resolutions, I'm not making any. Usually I make a few only to have them swiftly forgotten. This year, I'm going to skip the whole process. However, changes will be made. I'm going to be more conscious of what I eat. I'm going to go to the gym as often as possible. These two changes will hopefully get me into wedding dress shape. Lol or one can hope.

yo yo yiggity yo. i've never used the lj app before. this is kind of nifty. anywho... i just got done with an interview at a public policy law firm in DC (Dupont Circle if you're familiar). the people were really chill and super friendly. i lurve them already. i'm a fairly friendly person to begin with, but these people made me feel super comfortable. it's an admin assistant position/ receptionist. lots of answering phones, scheduling, etc. i know i could do the job...they just have to give me a chance to do it. haha :) the only ~issue with the whole thing is that they want someone to start on Monday. yeah...the 16th. like whoa. that would not make my current bosses happy at. all.

no use worrying about that until the offer comes in or not lol.

I only have 15 minutes before I really need to go to bed (as in turn off the lights and watch msnbc until I fall asleep), so i'll make this quick.

This night is one for the record books.

Our generation has lived with the tragedy of 9/11 as a frame for our lives for almost ten years. That one day has, in so many ways, defined our experiences as humans in this world so shocked by the terrible acts that occurred that Tuesday morning.

We were the scared children, looking to equally scared parents for explanation as buildings fell.
We were the passionate teens, looking for meaning as we watched our peers join the military and come back in simple pine boxes.
We are the disenchanted twenty-somethings, using our rights as citizens of the world to speak out for change and progress.

Now, this night, we are the vindicated.

Will his death end the War on Terror? No. Non-state actors and their tendency to cause havoc are a permanent part of our international structure. But this does send a very strong message.

No matter how long it takes, no matter where you run.

WE. WILL. FIND. YOU.

Day 4: Least favorite female character and why.

My gut reaction is to say Umbridge. She was such a birch... I mean bitch. My biggest problem with Umbridge is the way she sacrificed the education of the students in favor of the Ministry's own agenda. I DO NOT APPROVE. Also, her blatant disregard for the ethical treatment of...well, ANYONE is disgusting. I mean, Veritaserum? Really? Not to mention her abuse of the color pink. I'm all about pink. I happen to quite like the color. Her actions while wearing pink made the poor hue guilty by association. Darn you, crazy cat lady!!!

Day 5: Favorite Male Character and Why.

Is it cliche to say Harry? I really like Harry. I kind of want to punch him in Order of the Phoenix when he gets super angsty. Hmmm.... Dumbledore is another good one. But I have my issues with Dumbles, too. Eff that, I'm going to go with Kingsley. I think Kingsley and I are of similar minds. I like how he understands and gets to participate in the interaction between the muggle world and the wizarding world. Plus, I'm totes envious that he got to be the assistant or whatever to the Prime Minister AND Minister of Magic at the conclusion of the series. Yes, Kingsley is my favorite. I wish he received more accolades and screen time. <3

Day 4: Your favorite prince.

Hmmm.... I'm going to have to go with the Beast from Beauty and the Beast. I think his story is really fantastic. All the other princes were all like "damn, that girl is fiiiiine, idk if she has fins/appears dead/is eternally asleep/etc/" With Beast, it was a gradual love that grew between them. I really like that. Also, we got to see HIM change. That's priceless. Need a video example? Fine.

See? Awesomeness. I love the Beast.

Day 5: Favorite Hero.

Duh - Aladdin. He's like a million kinds of BAMF-tastic. I love that he is caring and kind. I get kind of upset with him every time he lies to Jasmine on the roof after "A Whole New World." But over all, I think he is a really decent guy. He's my favorite because he worked WITH other people, even Jasmine. He wasn't all "I'm Aladdin get out of my way." He was smarter than that. Mr. Diamond in the Rough is my kind of hero (and cute, too lol).

Writer's Block: Young and driven

Legal drinking age is 21 here in the US... but I think it should be 18. For those that think 18 year olds are not able to make wise decisions at their age, I have this question: If we cannot trust 18 year-olds to make wise decisions, why are we sending them to war? We give them guns, missiles, and send them off to die, but we don't hand them a can of beer? It just doesn't make sense to me. Also, when I was underage, alcohol was this ~tempting thing that was fun to consume because it was illegal. Now that I'm of age, the ~mystery is gone and I don't consume alcohol NEARLY as much as I used to. In fact, I've only been drunk twice since turning 21 in the summer of 2008. Basically, I think that if we help kids understand alcohol and its effects better and trust them to make good decisions following that education, we would be really surprised at the results.
