Hildrey Studio was commissioned to undertake a series of sensitive, strategic interventions, carefully restoring the listed façade and rationalising the building’s services to support its continued use.

Handmade wrought iron and stainless steel signage was introduced, enhancing the historic character of the exterior while giving the venue a distinctive presence on the bustling streets. By addressing practical constraints and preserving the building’s heritage, the interventions seamlessly align with the ethos of quality and authenticity that defines Lady of the Grapes.

The result is a space that feels deeply rooted in its Covent Garden context while offering a welcoming and thoughtfully curated experience, where the focus remains on the natural, sustainable ethos of the bar’s celebrated wines and bistro fare.

The result is a thoughtfully curated space that feels authentic to its Covent Garden surroundings while offering a welcoming retreat from the bustling streets. The design complements the wine and dining experience, creating a setting where visitors can savour the atmosphere as much as the menu..
Around busy careers and family life, the company of nature and comfort of serenity were identified as two missing components to city living.

With this in mind, we worked closely with the clients to organise the spaces according to their lifestyle. A natural outlook was created over the ground floor pond and upper green roof, while the visual impact of the internal spaces was pared down with warm, neutral tones and textured, organic materials.
It uses empty or unused addresses and links these with those who have no permanent abode. It allows the homeless to access services, get identification, build financial history, and avoid stigma. By doing this at an early stage, it helps avoid entrenchment and ease recovery.

The project is currently in live trials in London, overseen by the Financial Conduct Authority and in partnership with Barclays, Monzo, Crisis, The Big Issue, Ordnance Survey, Mastercard, and HM Land Registry.

In 2021, ProxyAddress was named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Best Inventions of the year. In 2020, it was awarded the Innovation in Politics Award for Humanitarian Aid. In 2018, ProxyAddress was awarded the RIBA President's Medal for Research and the D&AD Impact Award for Humanitarian Aid, beating entries from companies such as Google.

It was also named one of Wired's '18 things that made the world a better place in 2018'. In 2019, it was shortlisted for the Beazley Designs of the Year - celebrating the best design of the year from across the world. In 2020, ProxyAddress was awarded the inaugural Museum of Architecture Grant and named one of The Big Issue's Top 100 Changemakers of 2020.
Facing changing requirements as their family grows older and habits change, a considered rear extension was added to the original property footprint.

By increasing the available space, the remaining footprint was rationalised through a structural shear wall. The resulting one-third two-third split creates a clear hierarchy between spaces intended for socialising and those designed for retiring to.

Against this organisational backdrop, light, colour, and texture took centre stage. Careful curation of each was used to create areas of harmony or contrast through delicate plaster, tactile timber, and firm brick.

Alterations made included the construction of a new basement, significant extension of ground floor space, and a comprehensive re-configuration of the upper floors.

The aim was to introduce light and space into the existing set of compartmentalised and dark spaces. By creating an enfilade configuration throughout the plan, the full length of the house could be appreciated from the front door. Sliding screens allow the space to be divided up depending on how the owner wants to use it.

Natural materials such as stone and timber are used throughout the majority of the house, while the tactile areas - handrails, sliding screens, kitchen units - present a contrasting tone to attract the touch.

Client: Private
Construction Budget: £3.2m

This scheme for St. Cross College, Oxford encloses an existing but in-complete quadrangle with an L-shaped proposal which is broken down into smaller buildings, allowing the 53 study bedrooms in the upper floors to form clusters of 4, reducing the visual impact of the building exterior. Shared kitchens sit in the gaps between the clusters.

All common spaces are located at ground floor level, which include a lecture theatre, seminar rooms, a library and a cafe. These spaces enjoy direct access onto the informal and richly planted garden-quad.<img src="https://payload.cargocollective.com/1/22/735279/13142113/5-2a-s2_1000.jpg" width="900" height="506" width_o="1200" height_o="675" src_o="https://payload.cargocollective.com/1/22/735279/13142113/5-2a-s2_1200.jpg" data-mid="70485261" border="0" align="left" data-title="900 — 1000 × 562"data-hi-res="https://payload.cargocollective.com/1/22/735279/13142113/5-2a-s2_1200.jpg" />
Initially believed to require extensive demolition and structural replacement, the design process instead revealed opportunities for preservation. Through meticulous investigation and strategic intervention, much of the original fabric was retained, avoiding unnecessary destruction and significantly reducing both costs and carbon emissions.

The revitalised home seamlessly blends contemporary design with the charm of its Victorian heritage. A mix of open, light-filled spaces and cosy, idiosyncratic nooks creates a variety of environments tailored to the needs of a growing family. Key features include the creation of a kitchen and dining area closely connected to the garden, fostering a sense of openness and interaction, while quieter zones provide moments of privacy and reflection.

Sustainability guided every decision, with reclaimed timber flooring, lime plaster finishes, and bespoke joinery that complement the building’s original features. Skylights and carefully positioned glazing ensure natural light fills the home, reducing energy consumption and enhancing its welcoming atmosphere.

This project embodies the studio’s commitment to balancing modern living with historical sensitivity, ensuring the home continues to evolve with its family while minimising its environmental impact.
In February 2022, the studio's project ProxyAddress was presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York as part of The World Around summit.

Taking place in the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Peter B. Lewis Theater, the event was live and also streamed on YouTube to thousands of viewers.

The summit celebrated and shares the most exciting and critical projects in the world today: architecture and design’s now, near and next.

Topics explored included equitable futurism, experimental conservation, preservation and monument creation, planetary and personal scales of geological and social displacement, environmental myth-making from graphic novels to grand fictions, and the political agency of architecture when faced with the world's largest refugee camp. It also shared new buildings, technology and designs and ideas that address the worst consequences of climate change.

"It's no longer enough to remark about – or, worse, profit from – the ugliness of our world, or to advance projects that change its aesthetics without structural renovation. A new aesthetic of hope in our built environment is sorely needed. ProxyAddress offered this."- Anna Gibertini

What can you do with a degree in architecture? Where might it take you? What kind of challenges could you address? Architects After Architecture reframes architecture as a uniquely versatile way of acting on the world, far beyond that of designing buildings.

In this volume, 40 practitioners who have used their architectural training in new and resourceful ways - including Chris Hildrey - contributed a chapter each exploring their story. Together, they describe a future of architecture that is diverse and engaged, expanding the limits of the discipline, and offering new paths forward in times of crisis.
