A groundworks-led group delivering integrated construction, plant hire, haulage and residential development across the UK. Forecast turnover in excess of £75 million.
Each division operates with full autonomy, backed by the Group's shared infrastructure, fleet and leadership.

A leading groundworks and civil engineering contractor operating across the North East. Delivering packages from £50,000 to £10 million. HAB Northern delivers plot works, road and sewer infrastructure alongside the civils operation.
One of the UK's fastest-growing plant providers. 1,200+ mainline machines available for hire nationwide. Continually investing in new equipment. Supported by 16 eight-wheeled tippers for muck away and aggregate supply.
Three specialist residential brands — Oaktree Living (affordable, 5–75 homes), Appleton Homes (high-end private, 1–10 units), and Albrough Homes (housing for social care).
Hewitson Group is a groundworks-led business delivering integrated construction, plant hire, haulage and residential development services across the UK. With a forecast turnover in excess of £75 million and a workforce of over 300 people, the Group combines the scale of a major contractor with the reliability and accountability of a family-built business.
Operating throughout the North East for construction and nationwide for plant hire, our approach is straightforward: if we commit to something, we deliver it.
Our ability to self-deliver key packages — using our own plant, our own people and our own haulage — ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently and strictly on programme.
Michael Hewitson begins with a single JCB 3CX supporting local agricultural operations. As demand grows, further machines are purchased, laying the foundations of a plant hire business.
The Group expands into haulage, initially supporting agricultural and plant movements. Hewitson Civils is established, delivering groundworks packages from £50,000 to £10 million.
Albrough Homes is established, followed by Appleton Homes, bringing specialist social care and high-end private sale residential development into the Group.
Oaktree Living launches, targeting the affordable housing market in partnership with Registered Providers and Local Authorities across the region.
The Group remains founder-led, with the next generation actively running key divisions across Civils, Plant and Development. A 300-acre Teesside HQ anchors operations across the UK.

Three new Scania 8-wheel tippers added to the fleet, maintaining our aggregate logistics capability across the North East and wider region.

Ground-breaking ceremony with Morgan Sindall at the new Outer West Leisure Centre, Newcastle. Bulk earthworks now underway on site.

New affordable homes progressing at Peterlee in partnership with Karbon Homes, delivering quality housing for local communities.

Section 278 highway works and site drainage handed over ahead of schedule for a new residential development in County Durham.
Hewitson Group operates from a 300-acre headquarters near Teesside — the central hub of everything we do. This is not simply an office: it is the engine room that allows us to mobilise, maintain and deliver at scale, with no reliance on third parties.
The primary storage and dispatch hub for 1,200+ machines. Every machine leaves serviced, inspected and ready for immediate use.
Full in-house servicing capability, keeping downtime to an absolute minimum and ensuring fleet reliability at all times.
Dedicated on-site fuel storage enabling rapid dispatch and supporting the transition to HVO across major project work.
Main offices at Teesside Grange, supported by regional offices in Bishop Auckland and Team Valley for direct project oversight.
Large-scale storage enabling parts, equipment and materials to be held centrally and dispatched nationally at pace.
The Hewitson Difference. When we are appointed to a project, the full weight of this infrastructure is deployed. No third-party plant. No external haulage. Total control from mobilisation to handover.
Delivering for the UK's largest principal contractors, on time and on programme.

We are committed to reducing environmental impact while delivering practical solutions for clients. Our approach is focused on real, measurable change.
Of annual carbon emissions offset each year — a baseline commitment we are actively working to increase.
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil is used across all major projects where available, significantly reducing carbon output versus conventional diesel with no change to equipment performance.
A 4-acre solar array is in development at our 300-acre Teesside headquarters, targeted to generate significant on-site renewable energy and reduce our operational footprint.
Active participation in tree planting and Biodiversity Net Gain schemes across development sites, supporting planning requirements and broader environmental commitments.
Supporting contractor and developer clients with carbon impact data and HVO fuel verification aligned to project sustainability requirements.
Whether you are a principal contractor, developer or looking to hire plant — we will route your enquiry to the right team immediately.
Founded in 1991 by Michael Hewitson. A family-led business built on 35+ years of operational expertise and absolute delivery.
The team that has built Hewitson Group from a single machine into a £75m+ business.
Morgan Sindall · Newcastle
Hewitson Civils delivered a comprehensive groundworks and civil engineering package at Callerton Academy in Newcastle, working as a subcontractor to principal contractor Morgan Sindall.
The scope covered the full below-ground works, from initial bulk earthworks through to completed substructure, enabling the superstructure works to proceed on programme.
In line with Hewitson Group's sustainability commitments, HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel was used across major plant on this project — reducing fossil fuel consumption and supporting the principal contractor's project carbon targets.
This project was delivered through Hewitson Group's self-delivery model — combining the civils expertise of Hewitson Civils, plant resource from Hewitson Plant, and the Group's own tipper fleet for haulage. All three divisions operated under a single point of accountability.
Morgan Sindall · Bishop Auckland, County Durham
Hewitson Civils delivered the full groundworks package at the new Bishop Auckland Leisure Centre in County Durham, subcontracting to principal contractor Morgan Sindall.
The scheme presented a technically complex scope, including significant drainage diversions and reinforced concrete structural works alongside the core earthworks and external packages.
Delivered through the Group's self-delivery model: Hewitson Civils executed all civil and groundworks operations; Hewitson Plant supplied and operated the plant fleet; and the Group's haulage fleet managed all bulk muck away and aggregate movements on and off site.
Kier Construction · Newcastle
Hewitson Civils delivered precision groundworks and civil engineering works at the Freeman Hospital development in Newcastle, working as a subcontractor to principal contractor Kier Construction.
Operating within a live healthcare environment demanded the highest levels of programme discipline, coordination and zero-disruption working. All operations were sequenced to protect the hospital's existing infrastructure, patient routes and operational functions throughout.
Delivered through the Group's self-delivery model: Hewitson Civils managed all groundworks operations; Hewitson Plant provided the plant fleet; and the Group's haulage fleet handled all material movements in line with strict site access and noise constraints.
Fleet Investment · Hewitson Plant
Hewitson Plant has taken delivery of three new Scania 8-wheel tippers, adding to the Group's existing haulage fleet and maintaining capability for bulk material logistics across the North East and beyond.
The tippers are deployed on muck away and aggregate supply operations, supporting Hewitson Civils's civils and groundworks projects as well as serving external clients requiring bulk haulage services.
Hewitson Plant is one of the UK's fastest-growing plant providers, operating a fleet of 1,200+ machines available for hire nationwide. The division continuously invests in new equipment to ensure clients always have access to modern, compliant, well-maintained plant.
The haulage fleet — including the Group's 16 eight-wheel tippers — is deployed exclusively on muck away and aggregate supply. Hewitson does not operate as a general haulier; the tippers exist solely to support the Group's construction and plant operations.
Morgan Sindall · Newcastle
Hewitson Civils has commenced works at the new Outer West Leisure Centre in Newcastle, following a ground-breaking ceremony alongside principal contractor Morgan Sindall.
Bulk earthworks are now underway on site, marking the start of Hewitson Civils's groundworks package for this new community leisure facility.
Hewitson Civils is the Group's civil engineering and groundworks division, delivering packages from £50,000 to £10 million across the North East. The division works alongside principal contractors including Morgan Sindall, Kier Construction and others, delivering self-performed groundworks with Hewitson Plant and Haulage supporting all operations.
Karbon Homes · Peterlee
Oaktree Living — Hewitson Group's affordable housing brand — is delivering new homes at Peterlee in partnership with Karbon Homes.
Good progress is being made on site, with the scheme forming part of Oaktree Living's programme to deliver affordable, quality homes across the North East.
Oaktree Living is Hewitson Group's affordable housing development brand, specialising in schemes of between 5 and 75 homes — working with registered providers, local authorities and housing associations to deliver high-quality affordable housing in the North East.
Projects are delivered through the Group's integrated model, with Hewitson Civils providing groundworks and infrastructure and Hewitson Plant supplying plant across all sites.
HAB Northern · County Durham
HAB Northern has successfully completed Section 278 highway works and site drainage for a new residential development in County Durham, handed over ahead of programme.
The Section 278 works involved delivering off-site highway improvements — a legal requirement tied to the residential planning consent — alongside the full site drainage package.
HAB Northern is the Group's plot works and road & sewer infrastructure division, operating under the Hewitson Civils umbrella. The division specialises in on- and off-site infrastructure for residential developments, delivering adoptable roads, sewers, drainage and associated highway works.
HAB Northern's operations are fully supported by Hewitson Civils's civil engineering expertise and Hewitson Plant's fleet, enabling rapid, self-delivered programme delivery.
