So, I woke up this morning to a phone call from my mother. My paternal grandfather passed away very early this morning, around 4 am. A little later this morning, my maternal grandmother went to the ER for vomiting and chest pain. Apparently, her gall bladder is having issues, and she's going to have surgery to have it removed on Thursday. I also found out that my cousin's two year old son has cancer, diagnosed right after christmas, and had surgery to remove the tumor, a kidney, and a few lymph nodes. He'll need to go on Chemo, and possibly even full radiation.

And all of this was tossed on me on my birthday.

So... Hermaphrodites?

Some time ago, I came across the idea that the term 'Hermaphrodite' is strictly derogatory. While I can agree with this in respect to actual humans- the term is typically used on trans-genders as a way to imply that they don't qualify as their gender identity. I do _not_, however, agree with this at all when referring to fictional characters, especially those that aren't even trying to appeal to reality. A very large number of furry characters are hermaphrodites, and I mean no insult by saying that.
The definition given to Hermaphrodite in this argument was something along the lines of an individual possessing fully developed and fully functional sexual organs of both genders. Even under this strict definition, I understand that most furry Hermaphrodites _do_ fall under it, so it is not at all insulting or controversial to use the term. However, I take issues with this definition. A male does not have to have fully developed or fully functioning sexual organs to qualify as a male. A female does not have to have fully developed or fully functional sexual organs to qualify as a female. Why should a Hermaphrodite have to have fully developed and fully functioning sexual organs of both male and female to qualify as a Hermaphrodite?
All of that being said, I typically try to refer to people by the gender term they prefer, whether male, female, hermaphrodite, or otherwise.

I feel like I had more to say on the subject, but can't think of it. So, thoughts?

Yup, heading back to Maryland today after two weeks of leave. I spent the first week in Minnesota with my Family, and had a Family Reunion that weekend, which was fun. They always are. After that, though, I came Home to my Mate/Mistress, Care/Sidi/shadow_mage. We've been spending the entire Week Together, doing all Our things and having lots of fun. We went Out Together to do some shopping, where We picked up a few gifts for each other- I got her a coloring book, a Mad Libs pad, a Hello Kitty ball, a new Webkinz, a new home phone, and a new headset for her computer, along with a few things I brought- the movie 'Hop', a flowery hand bag, and a pretty rock, although I'm not sure what kind it is. She got me a few games for my XBox 360- 'Dark Souls', 'The First Templar', and 'Tekken Tag Tournament 2'. I've played all three of them a little now, since I brought my XBox with, and I've enjoyed them; Care/Sidi/shadow_mage seems to have enjoyed watching me play them, too, which is good.
We also watched the movie 'Hop', which was pretty awesome. shadow_mage has a review up on her LJ, and did it more justice than I could. It is a very good movie, though, and I recommend it to anyone who likes comedy. We also watched 'The Silver Lining Playbook' and, again, shadow_mage has a better review than I could write for it on her LJ. It, too, is a very good movie, with a solid plot and a good look at hard-to-define mental illnesses.
Other than that, though, We've been mostly snuggling and cuddling and just sharing Our Time Together, which is very good and I am very happy with. All in All, We've had a very good and happy time together. -grins- Even better, I'll be moving in with her this Winter. I can't wait!

Incredibly late Christmas Trip entry!

Yeah, this entry is very, very late. But, you know what? That's okay. Because I said so.

My Christmas leave from the ship was very short (only like a week and a half, if that), because of the ship's horrible, hectic schedule. So, I spent a few days in Minnesota with my family, to celebrate Christmas. Got a wolf-head hat and a sketchbook from my older sister Amber, and a... beefstick from my younger sister Candy. Impressive. :D

After that, I went to be with Mistress/Sidi/Care/shadow_mage for four days. Overall, the Time Home was amazing, as always. Mistress is my Heaven.

The first day, since I arrived pretty late, We just snuggled and watched some TV and "Breaking Dawn Part 1" together, after eating dinner, which I picked up on the way Home from the airport. We also made a list of things We'd need to upgrade Mistress' computer, Hestia. The hard drive crapped out on her, so We had to fix that, for sure.

The next day, We spent shopping for all of Hestia's new parts- a 1TB HDD, new Graphics Card, 4GB new RAM, new 24'' Monitor, Windows 7, new Wireless Router, and a 1TB external hard drive. After getting all the parts, We picked out a new 40'' flatscreen TV for Mistress, though I had to go back and pick it up after We brought the parts home, since our hands were already full. That done, I put all the new parts in Hestia, and while Hestia installed windows and We ate dinner, We watched "When Strangers Click" on the new TV. The movie follows five people and their internet relationships, and is pretty good. Mistress and I both agree, though, that the best one was the guy on Second Life. He lives with his mother on a remote farm/ranch/cabin in Sweden, so there isn't much of a social scene. The guy, wanting something to do, joined Second Life as Jonas Bara. An aspiring musician, he owned his own virtual bar/club in Second Life about two months after joining it, and performed there every night. It wasn't until a woman, named Angel, came to his bar, though, that he really took off. She taught him how to balance his sounds, so that his guitar wouldn't drown his voice, or vice versa, and so the mic wouldn't crackle with his breath. She also gave him some fashion tips. With Angel's help, Jonas caught the attention of a publisher on Second Life, and was offered to become the first Avatar with his own record. Jonas had to go to the US to do the recording, where he also met up with Angel IRL for the first time. That meeting resulted in a son for Jonas and Angel. Two years later, they are married in Second Life, though Jonas still lives in Sweden and Angel and their son still live in the US. Through Skype and Second Life, the family keeps in touch every day, and they visit each other as often as they can.

The third day, We went shopping again, this time just for fun. We started with some coffee, which We drank while just chatting and relaxing in the mall, then We went to The Source, where We got new speakers and a new mouse for Hestia. After that, We went over to GameStop and browsed for awhile- We were hoping to find "Sims Medieval" to at least price for Mistress, but it wasn't in stock. Mistress did buy me Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age Origins: Awakening as a Christmas/Birthday present, both of which are awesome games. We also went to the Calender Store, where Mistress bought me a beautiful Wolf Calender for 2012, and herself an awesome Dragon calender. Finally, We went to Zellar's to get new sheets and pillows for Mistress' bed. Once We got home, We just hung out and relaxed after getting everything set up and put away, and watched the "Glee Concert Movie" which was good, though it seemed choppy to me. Of course, it was more of a highlights reel/cast interview special of the Glee Concert Tour, so that makes sense. I also cut Mistress' hair during the day, though all We had for me to use was a pair of scissors. It ended up with layered rows in the back and sides by accident, but Mistress said she likes it, and has apparently been getting compliments on it since, so I agreed to cut her hair again next time I'm Home, no later than July.

The last two days, We spent together just having Us Time and watching TV and hanging out and even having computer time. Mistress re-introduced me to Neopets, and got me wanting Webkinz, though I'll probably wait until after I move to start that. We also found an awesome Pagan/Wiccan website that has all sorts of things, from trinkets to alter supplies, stones to Tarot cards, and all kinds of other stuff. We both had a blast looking around the site, and I bought an awesome Tarot Deck based on Celtic Shamanism and Shapeshifting. The site, btw, is www.dragonmoon.ca .

The Home Trip did end on an incredibly sour note, though... The last night I was Home, since I was leaving in the morning, Mistress started having intense stomach pains, shortly after We ate dinner. We hoped it would go away, or at least be bearable, after awhile, like most of her pains, but finally called for an ambulance and went to the hospital around midnight. It turned out to be do to an intestinal blockage, caused by a twist in her intestines that she's had _since birth_, which, coincidentally, is also what caused the constant side pains her doctors never believed her about. I spent as much time with her as I could, but had to leave to catch my plane, since there was no way for me to be able to stay longer without getting in trouble.

Even though she's back from the hospital and recovering well already, I'm still upset with myself for not being able to stay...

Alright, so... Christmas. Yay. Hehehe. Seriously, I do enjoy Christmas, but didn't do much this year- yet, at least. Not going on Leave until December 30th, which leaves me stuck in Virginia with nothing much to do. For example, yesterday, which was, in fact, Christmas Day, I got to stay on the ship all day. Hurrah, Duty.

December 30th is when the fun starts, though. First, I'm going to Minnesota to visit my family and celebrate a slightly belated Christmas, as well as New Years with them. Then, on January 3rd, I'm going to go visit shadow_mage/Care/Sidi/Mistress. We're going to be doing lots of things- the major one being fixing her desktop, Hestia.

All in all, I intend to have lots of fun during New Years.

Also, I suck at this journaling thing.

Goals and Resolutions for 2011!

Visit with Care/Sidi/Mistress

Just yesterday, I left from my visit with my Mate, shadow_mage/Care/Sidi/Mistress. We were both pretty well devastated from having to leave, though she showed it more than I did...

Still, it was a great week together. For the first couple of days, we just stayed inside and relaxed. Then we went to the Hillcrest Mall near her place to run a few errands and just wander for a bit, though we were back by noon and spent the rest of the day on her couch.

The day after that, we went to the Promenade a bit further away. Had to take taxi there and back. We spent a good part of the day there, and bought a few things. Mistress bought me a game for my PSP called Lunar- a series that I've heard about, but had never had the chance to play. We also picked up a purple unicorn plush/pillow for her, but I don't think she's named it yet. Then we had some chicken sandwiches from KFC for lunch before going to watch the movie Tron Legacy. I think it could have been better, but it was still a really good movie. Awesome soundtrack, too. After that, we had Baskin Robbins ice cream for dessert and as a kind of birthday cake for me, and then went home.

The next day, though, we had to take a walk to a clinic/medical lab so she could get blood samples taken. When we got there, though, the elevators were broken, so we couldn't get her to where she needed to be. We decided to walk back home and hope that she could reschedule the appointment for some other time, and find someone who could take her. On the way home, we stopped for McDonald's, and then also went to the Future Shop, where she bought me Infinite Undiscovery for the XBox 360. I don't personally own a 360 yet, but my roommate's do, and I'm welcome to use it. We ran a few more errands, then went home.

During the week, I introduced her to the DotA-based game 'League of Legends', which, while a bit too complex for her to play, she enjoyed watching me play on and off throughout the week. I also did all the cooking through the week, and, while I'm by no means the greatest chef in the world, she loves my cooking, so that makes me happy. We spent a lot of time just snuggled on her couch, watching TV/Movies, but I fully enjoyed it all.

They say that the Ultimate Philosophical question is this: What is the meaning of life?

I find the answer to be simple. All you have to do is look at the two most basic instincts of any living thing- to feed and to breed.

What does this tell me? It tells me that the meaning of life is to live.

Life finds a way to continue on, it's sole purpose is simply to be.

What meaning an individual can give his or her own life, however, is an entirely different question. A question that can be answered only by that individual's desire, motivation, and action.

So I say that the true Ultimate Philosophical question is this:

What meaning do you want to give your life?

So, I have a completely random question.

So, I said I'd try to use my LJ more often, so here's my attempt. :D I'm really not very good at this sort of thing... Writing about my day and all that. Mostly because of Most of what happens during the day is usually insignificant, in my opinion. As long as I get to be with my Mate/Mistress/Love shadow_mage, my life is happy. That's all that matters to me. She is my Life, always and forever. I... never want to lose her, and I wish I could do more for her... But, that might take a few years, still, when we can move in together. That being said, I can't wait until December, which is going to be the next time that I get to go visit her. Trying for at the very least one visit a year, but preferably two or more... I can't wait to be with her. She is everything to me... I love her. That's that.

Trip Home with Mistress.

I just got back to Virginia last night... Returned from a wonderful trip to where my heart and soul call home: With my Mistress, shadow_mage. She is, quite honestly, my Life. And we had a perfect week together, even if certain TMI things on her part prevented us from doing as much love making as we wanted.

I don't remember exact order of all events, but it's because the whole trip was spent in a happy, blissful mood. We watched several movies together- 'Stardust', 'The Book of Eli', 'Alice in Wonderland', and 'Dear John'. We started watching 'V for Vendetta', but never finished watching it. We also spent a lot of time just snuggling together... Was perfect. I also took some time to draw most of Hethkar and Obsidian's cubs while I was there, while Mistress either watched or checked stuff on the internet.

I did all the cooking... Apparently, my cooking is amazing. :D

I also got the chance to meet Mistress' Mom... It's hard for me to judge her, though, as I could tell she was purposely being extra nice while I was there. Mistress also says she was high, but I wouldn't know.

We also went out three times while I was there, once just to browse the Mall, then to browse the Plaza, and finally to do some shopping. I also helped Mistress walk all the way from her bathroom to her living room- twice.

We spent some time playing Sims 2, too, and then Sims 3 when I bought a copy for her and myself from the plaza.

Sorry if this entry seems a bit disorganized, I'm just typing things as they come to mind...

I can't wait until the next time I can go Home to her... Maybe I'll be able to have some toys for us to play with, too. ;P

Seeing as how I intend to start using LJ more often, I thought it would be good to reintroduce myself. So, here it goes.

IRL, my name is Jacob Halfen. I am an OS2 in the US Navy, currently stationed on the USS Iwo Jima and preparing for a four month deployment to South America. I am also about to reenlist, with my first four years of naval service ending on July 7th. When I'm not working, I enjoy reading, writing, drawing, playing games- both video and table top/pen and paper, and, above all else, spending time with my Mate, Love, Girlfriend, Fiancee, and Mistress, Carolyn (shadow_mage).

Personality: I am very kind and generous, giving with little thought and rarely expecting anything in return. I am very unselfish, and almost always help someone out without worrying about what might happen to me because of it. I also know enough to know that what I know is little more than a grain of salt in the greater scheme of things, though I am always willing and wanting to learn more.

Religion: I am very open minded and accepting of people of any religion, I care little for such differences. My personal beliefs, however, fall under pagan. The Absolute Beginning and Ultimate End of all things is the Void, a nothingness so complete that not even nothing exists within it. From the Void, however, came the Primal Origins, Order and Chaos. It was they who formed the universe and the plantes, and from them was born Gaia, the Mother Earth, Sol, the Father Sun, and Luna, the Teacher Moon. Gaia and Sol fell in love and gave birth to all living things on the planet Earth, Gaia's Garden. It is Luna who taught all species how to live and survive, and, taking a particular liking to humans, gave them a special gift. The ability to learn for themselves. It is through this gift that humans are as we are today, and blessed with Her guidance.

I know this has lots of negative cannotations from stereotypes, but I assure you that the community as a whole, and myself, are not as bad as they are believed to be. The furry community is just as diverse as the human race, because we draw from nearly every society on the planet.

My Primary fursona is Hethkar Vormund, a six foot tall anthropomorphic wolf. The majority of his fur is a deep, royal blue, broken only by the jagged black stripe that runs from his nose all the way to the tip of his tail. His eyes change color based on his mood, though are normally hazel. The tips of his ears droop loosely.
Hethkar is a master swordsman, wielding both the knights' Templar sword Justice and the massive Wolf's Tail with ease. He is commonly known as the 'Eternal Guardian' for his many achievements, and for his current role as the personal Champion of his Mate and Mistress, Obsidian Vormund (previously Arcticglow).
Sitting alongside Obsidian, he is the King of Trinity Run. They rule from Ebony Hall in the center of the capital city of Arievayl.
He has six children, Drake and Niasha- the two eldest and fraternal twins, Vann and Vento- identical twin, demi feral brothers, Zandria- a hermaphrodite spellsinger, and Nova- a female taur, with Obsidian. He also has a son with his sister, though neither of them actually know about him, nor he of them, Blitz Winters.
Hethkar is kind and benevolent, but extremely protective of his Mate, family, and friends. He will give much to help even a stranger, but he would sacrifice his own life to protect those near him.

I am free to roleplay, but don't expect anything further than friendship from it. My Mate and I are quite serious and closed.

To see me pissed straight the fuck off! My girl, shadow_mage, tried to join the mil_wives community here. You know what they said? This'll pretty much sum it up, though it's not all that was said: "She has some very severe mental disorders, not to mention physical ones and that combined with the furry, self-proclaimed druid thing - not a snowball's chance in Hell!"
Yes, she has mental disorders, but almost always has those under thumb, especially when in contact with me. Yes, she has physical disorders, but why the fuck should that matter, anyway? Yes, she's a furry. Guess what? So am I. So are lots of other good people, including people in the military. The furry community is just as fucking diverse as the human race. You know why? Because we consist of the entire human race. People from every fucking place in the world are furries. Not everyone is, of course, but furries are everywhere. Yes, we've had a bad rep, but it's only for that one fucking reason. Never seen anyone hate on someone for being human before. And, yes, she's a fucking self proclaimed druid. So the fuck what? She's pagan, and so are countless other people. Especially if you include atheists and those people that know something exist, but don't know what. Fuck it, I'm pagan. My own spiritual/religious beliefs don't fall under any other category, and are pagan by default.
You know what, though? I really don't give a fuck. If they're that thrice-damned judgmental, then it's not a community my girl needs to be in. End Fucking Rant.
