< friends cut >

I've been a lot overwhelmed by internet stuff lately, and it's resulted in me spending time away from it, when I don't really want to. I've been a crap LJ friend and super inconsistent at keeping up with all of your posts and I honestly want to do better. So this afternoon I did a major friends cut (like, half of my flist).

The cut was honestly just because I needed to make my flist more manageable. Either we hadn't really talked in a while, our interests have drifted apart since we friended each other, or (and it was mostly this), I feel bad that I haven't really been able to keep up with your posts. I'm still reachable by PM, on twitter or on tumblr if you'd like to keep in touch.

They have no remarkable abilities or miraculous ideas,’ Loki pauses for a few seconds, laughing to himself as if he finds the whole idea amusing.

‘Oh no no no. Written for the prompt the shadow cast by the future.... I hope you like it. I've discovered that this sort of internal character monologue/study is what I'm best at writing. (and again, apologies that this is a day late :3) happy holidays ♥

The future shapes the past, and the past the future. If there’s one thing he’s learned over is many years, it’s that history repeats itself. And yes it evolves, changes, holds new discoveries and genuinely intrigues him; but as time goes on, he’s left with a sense of dull familiarity.

He sees humanity make the same mistakes over and over again. Not that he's got a better track record. He wonders if either of them are ever going to learn. He wonders if maybe that’s the point. He sees Rose’s willingness to help everyone in Rory. He wonders if Rory’s going to be a lot like Wilf when he’s old and wrinkled. Oswin’s ingenuity reminds him of Martha’s determination and fierceness. River’s flirtatious nature always brings back whispers of ‘hello, my name is Jack Harkness’. Amy and Donna both have an amiable sense of spunk to go with their violently ginger hair.

He smiles to himself. Maybe a sense of familiarity isn’t the worst thing in the world. He knows the further he goes with them the more it will hurt. Maybe that’s the reason why he should.

One. Apologies for the lateness of this. Two, I'm not sure what this is. I hope you like it. I kind of like it. It's very gen. It's a look at the beach scene from James' perspective. That's what came to me with your prompt. happy holidays ♥

Sometimes it feels like they are all moving a million miles an hour, even when standing still. That’s what Saint Marina was for the crew of the S.S Colorado. That’s what it was for James King.

He is used to going at breakneck speed though everything, but this is different. He always had orders, reasons, a plan to follow, and teammates to stand by. Here he has none of these, nothing to make any sense of this world spiraling out of control. Except for Tani.

And now, he supposes, Grace. There was something about what they were doing. It should be complicated, confusing and problematic. It isn’t. It is calm, quiet and almost peaceful. Well, not the act itself, but the feeling it gives him. Everything slows down for them in this moment. And their crazy messed up world ceases to matter.

But then she leaves. And insists ‘it’s a one-time thing’. And he finds himself saying okay. And the world speeds up again. With more confusion and craziness than it had started with.

Case fic. This prologue accompanies this ficmix, but seeing as I plan to add on this as a chaptered fic, I am cross-posting it here. It is meant to introduce a verse that I will eventually expand.

Temperance Brennan stood at the entrance to the U.S army base outside Baghdad. Her brown hair blowing in the breeze, she waited, poised behind a particularly enigmatic reporter who seemed to have been trying to arrange a meeting she didn’t have the clearance for. The feisty blonde, who’s bright features never seemed to tire was determined, Temperance would give her that; only when it was absolutely clear that pushing the matter was going to move her away from her objective did she concede. One could only assume the story she was looking for was the one Temperance had been called in on. She agreed to her scheduled interview with public relations and proceeded onwards.

Slightly irritated that the journalist’s persistence had cost her valuable minutes and she was bordering on late, Temperance walked up to security and flashed her credentials: “Dr. Brennan, forensic anthropologist. I’ve been called in to consult”. The guard gave her badge a purposeful scan, handed it back to her and waved her through the gates.

As she entered the base, she was relieved to be removed from the heat, temporary as it was. The Iraqi weather was a double-edged sword. On one hand, it was hot enough to demand short sleeves and shorts, yet its wind and frequent sandstorms made these clothing choices undesirable. She’d been prepared regardless; as a recognized and trusted forensic anthropologist, it was not the first time she’d examined human remains in a Middle-Eastern country. She’d received a call from General Richards requiring her skills to solve a particularly delicate case. From what they told her, the body had been found inside the grounds of the base, but only just. They needed to know both who the body was and how it got there in order to plan their next move.

She walked through the doors and a soldier led her down the hall towards the back of the base. It soon became clear, however, that the air-conditioned interior of the base would provide only a brief reprise from the sweltering heat outside. She was led out the rear entrance to a convergence of personnel a few meters away from the door. The army physician waved her over. Temperance took a breath and joined those circling the remains: a partially exposed skeleton, buried in the dry desert sand.

“Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist”, she flashed her badge as formality; these people invited her into their territory, they knew who she was. Still, protocol existed for a reason. She did her initial inspection of the body, checking for age, sex and any other visible identity markers. After a few minutes she concluded, “Victim appears to be male, in his mid-twenties. Body’s been exposed to extreme temperatures for at least a year, most likely more. Judging by the sophisticated dental work, most likely of North American origins. Regardless, dental records should speed up the process of identifying the body,” she stated while one of the individuals surrounding the body jotted it down.

“Are you sure about that?” the General seemed unsure of her conclusion. Temperance was never amused with people who assumed she’d come to her doctorate by chance instead of study and drive.
“We’ve only been here six months, there’s no way it could be any of our men.” He seemed worried in the way one does when they are trying really hard not to appear so.

Temperance added, in the hopes of reassuring him “I haven’t concluded positively that it’s an American or a even soldier for that matter. I’d need further examination and dental records to verify identity without error,” her retort came out a bit brasher than it should have, and it was obvious.

“There is another addendum to this body, Dr. Brennan,” he explained apologetically. “Just prior to your arrival, we found these in the vicinity of the body,” he pulled out a baggie containing a set of army dog tags. Richards clarified “They were picked up to make a quick I.D, although with skeletonized remains we can never be too sure, which is why we called for a consult.”

“Which means you are now trying to solve a murder and a disappearance,” the anthropologist clarified.

General Richards gestured for her to follow him as he walked towards his office, “It also means we have to handle this with the utmost discretion. I don’t know who this body we have was, but I’d rather be sure before we alert any media or authorities.”

- - - - -

Hannah Burley was used to dry heat. This was just another of many days in the sweltering Iraqi sun. After getting into a heated debate with the security officer at the entrance to the base she had been assigned, she finally went inside to wait for her scheduled meeting with their “this is what we want you to know” guy. Where she was, in fact, still waiting. Her afternoon was becoming a tad more interesting than usual. She’d known something was different when she’d arrived at the base: she could make out personnel scurrying to attend to some commotion happening just outside her line of vision. She thought it was just one of those army experiences she could add to her correspondence to give it some reality. Something that wasn’t planned and given to her in direct, policed, statements.

She gauged by the fact that she’d just seen a woman walk towards the supposed commotion, regal and most definitely not dressed for the army, this was a lot more than just some occasional staple of life in the war. From what she could pick up with her handy eavesdropping skills: there was a body somewhere in the vicinity, and she was pretty sure she wasn’t supposed to know about it.

Sitting still when there was a story waiting to be discovered was never her forte. Hannah was built for journalism. She was a stubborn individual; she’d persist through sweat and tears to find the truth. Despite knowing what she should do and was allowed to do, she’d purse it regardless of “classified”.

The consultant, who Hannah assumed was a medical examiner, exited the general’s office.

“I will be back tomorrow. I’ll need a suitable place to work in and a way to contact the Jeffersonian,” she said as she turned towards the exit. The reporter smiled, she respected a woman who could hold her own in the world of men. Heck, it was one of the reasons she chose this assignment. To prove to the world she could do the same.

Hannah made a split second decision and jumped up to follow the woman. The PR guy was busy, she had no idea when her meeting was going to happen and she wasn’t going to miss this opportunity to find out more.

“Excuse me,” Hannah paused, unsure of how to address the person in front of her.

“Dr. Temperance Brennan” the woman corrected her.

“Dr. Brennan, why does the army need to consult with a medical examiner? Isn’t the army equipped with a physician that can work in that capacity,” she questioned.

Temperance Brennan, as the reporter had guessed wasn’t one for modesty and revealed more than she had probably intended “I’m a forensic anthropologist, what I do is much more specialized than the duties of an army physician or even a regular medical examiner.”

So the body was more of a skeleton. Hannah had previously worked on a story involving the identification of unknown remains and was familiar with what the profession’s object of study. The question now was why Brennan needed a thirty-minute meeting with the General.

“What did General Richards have to tell you?” Hannah asked feigning innocence, hoping to get a bit more out of the doctor.

“That’s a confidential matter, Ms.?” Now it was Dr. Brennan’s turn to ask something of her.

She smiled with a twinkle in her eye “Hannah Burley. Pleasure to meet you. That’s fine. I was just wondering if I could aid in any capacity, I’ve been covering this general area since the war started.” She took her notepad out of her bag and scribbled down her name and contact information. “This is where you can reach me if you need help at all,” Hannah handed over the piece paper and started walking away.

“I doubt I will” Brennan replied pocketing the paper.

“I’ll see you around” Hannah answered smugly.

the thing about hannah burley

This is a rant that's been a long time coming. Sticking up for Hannah when almost no one else would pretty much made me have ALL THE HANNAH FEELINGS. I've pretty much driven my friends and family to not ask me anything about Bones because, intentional or not, I will inevitably end up in a rant about Hannah Burley and the problem with how that fandom sees women.

So I'm here to explain them, because I believe she's a really great person. She's a strong character that was never used to her full potential. She is relatable. She is not a mary sue or the biggest bitch to ever walk the earth (trust me, I've seen both extremes from the Bones fandom). This is why I love her, relate to her and will stick up for her forever.

- - - - - - - - - - -

“You don’t know who I am, so you don’t trust me. Maybe you hate me a little, or even a lot. I might be trying to steal your <strike>dad </strike>ship.
Wouldn’t it be better if you knew for sure what was going on, so you’d have a real reason to hate me?” – Hannah Burley

Okay so maybe this is her talking to Parker, but the point still applies to the rest of the fandom. They don't know her, they make literally no effort to. They see her life from Booth's side and that's it. She affects his life, he doesn't affect hers. She was a secondary character, so it does make sense, but seeing as people have kind of done that with Brennan lately (I'll explain it specifically later), I feel like despite Booth being a conservative and patriarchal person, a lot of the fandom sees the show from his point of view. The thing is, the writers have sort of disguised his point of view into Brennan's point of view. Does anyone remember Temperance Brennan from the early seasons? Who didn't want kids or marriage? That's Temperance Brennan to me. That's who she is and what she's become is a pale comparison to what she used to be. I am not accepting her "motherly redemption arc" as her character. It's Booth's. He's the one who wants kids and marriage. He's always wanted that. So recent seasons Brennan? Kinda of feels like just her doing everything for Booth. Maybe I'm a little biased in that assumption, but the fact remains is she has less agency than she started with. Hannah is so much more than what you see from Booth's point of view. From Booth's point of view, she didn't want to marry him. From Booth's point of view that's all she should have wanted. These characters are not these characters in relation to him. They are their own characters. They have their own fears, hopes and dreams and the fact that so many people can't see that and assume they want what Booth wants (only to hate them when they don't) baffles me.

Why does everyone hate Hannah Burley? I have to say, I’ve seen lots of reasons why, none that particularly make any sense. They either are entirely out there or have no evidence in canon. I excluded arguments made against Hannah because of traits Katheryn has from this list, because honestly, those have no basis in rational thinking.

A few gems include:

“Henceforth Hannah shall be known as Voldemort Barbie.”

A Journalist from ZapIt tweeted: Booth’s ex Hannah just strolled into bowling alley. @Stamos and I realize she is just an actress and promise not to punch her. For now.

It is completely unbelievable that Hannah and Brennan could be friends and pass the bechdel together because Hannah is supposed to be Temperance’s enemy because “Brennan wants her boyfriend.”

Someone added pictures of Hannah to their collage about the darker side of humanity.

Implying that Bones hates Hannah when there is ABSOLUTELY NO CANON EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT IT.

Likewise, all canon characters hate Hannah, again, NO EVIDENCE IN CANON.

She has been compared to the serial killers from the show. Also Howard Epps/Hannah Burley (do I even need to say no basis?)

BuddyTV: Evil Hannah = Real Hannah

I think what irritates me the most about this is that there are irrational arguments from journalists among all the general fan ridiculousness. The fact that journalists think it's okay to rat and hate on her and threaten punching Katheryn Winnick (which honest to god I wish they had done because she could have kicked their asses so hard. I highly doubt they're also black belts.)

- - - - - - - - - -

She’s a well-developed character (and why the show didn’t act on any of the character they developed for her will always confuse me) with goals, ambitions, opinions that she sticks to. She’s a believable character. She’s the character on the show I can relate to most. I love her and here's why:

Hannah Burley is determined, independent and stubborn to a fault. She doesn’t let things get in her way and she sticks to her guns when she believes in something. These opinions she sticks to are arguably the only rational arguments against her character, but they are still a double standard, as no one would hate a male character for sticking to his beliefs.

ONE. She’s a journalist; she finds the truth regardless of where that takes her. She’s a war correspondent in Afghanistan, she knows that it sometimes requires a little danger. She needs to get to the bottom of her stories and she’s willing to go far for them. When she gets shot in the leg pursuing a story about local drug dealers, her boyfriend aka the lovely Seeley Booth asks her to stop, for her own safety (which to me sounds suspiciously like “I’m a man and it’s my job to protect you.”) She says okay. After Booth leaves, Temperance Brennan asks her again, because she’s Booth’s friend and doesn’t want to see him hurt and also because Temperance has an inkling feeling that Hannah’s not going to stop following the story. She’s right and what follows is a real conversation between the two. Hannah explains that while she respects that Booth wants to be protective and that he’s worried, she’s not going to let someone else get in the way of doing her job. She’ll lie to him so he doesn’t worry, but what she does for her is for her. "Would you back down, Temperance, if you thought you were woking on something important?, Hannah reminds Brennan that she’d be doing the same thing. They’re similar in that they’re not going to stop doing their jobs because the men they know want to be protective of them. Or at least Brennan as she’d originally been written wouldn’t.

TWO. She doesn’t like kids. Well she likes kids, but I don’t think she really wants to have any. Which makes her a unique female character on Bones. Scratch that, Temperance didn’t want kids. Oh but then the show pulled the whole “redemptive mother arc” on her so she'd actually want them because she’s a woman and that's what we're all supposes to do. So yeah, she’s still pretty unique. From what I can remember, Hannah doesn’t believe she’s a nurturing person around kids and has made the conscious decision to not have any. She makes the effort to interact with Parker for Booth’s sake, but even then, she treats Parker more like an adult than I think anyone on the show ever has. She reasons with him; she doesn’t dumb down anything for him. She still doesn’t want kids.

THREE. She doesn’t want to get married. She values her independence, and she doesn’t want to lose that to marriage or kids. She does love others, but she also loves being her own person. It doesn’t mean she didn’t love Booth, she did. She just prefers staying in the girlfriend area because marriage to her means relying too much on another person. She’s not the marrying kind, as she says. Yet, Booth ignores the three whole times she says this to him, and decides to propose anyway. As a result, Hannah is “a bitch because she led him on and now won’t marry him.” I’m pretty sure if Booth had respected Hannah as a independent human being he would have got the memo. I still maintain that it’s Booth’s fault for not listening to her. She doesn’t budge on the issue because it’s a fundamental belief she has about herself. I think the problem with Booth is that he likes independent women, but he never wants them to be independent when he imagines their life together: he wants to be the one in charge, the one who protects and the one who always knows what to do. I don’t think Hannah or Temperance are the right kind of person for him, because they are both self-reliant to a fault.

- - - - - - - - - -

Fandom subjects her to a double standard where they hate her for her faults but then they also hate her because she’s a bland, mary-sue-ish character. You cant have both, Bones fandom. She’s one or the other, and in my opinion she’s neither. She’s a fantastic character. She values her own independence more than any character I’ve ever seen. Even in a show that values women who work in traditionally male-dominated fields (Camille, Temperance, Caroline, etc) she pushes boundaries.

It's why I love her.
