Dear Awesome Yuletide Writer!

I am so excited you've going to write me a fic this year! I am sure it'll be wonderful. Optional details are optional of course, and with any of these fandoms I know I'm going to be thrilled with any fic, so have fun.

So. More details about my requests:

Romeó et Juliette
Benvolio Montague

Words can not express how much I love Benvolio. He was my favorite character when I read the original play, and the musical has only made me love him more.

I would love, love, love some pre musical Benvolio/Tybalt stuff, as slashy or not as you see fit. More details about this in my letter.

Otherwise, anything is good, especially post-musical fic. Again, more details in the letter.

It is important to point out right away that I am mainly familiar with the 2010 and the 2011 Takarazuka productions, as well as the Korean tour of the original French production. But if you're coming from a different version, don't worry! I'm going to love anything about Benvolio. That said, on to my attempts at prompts.

Tybalt/Benvolio is my favorite hateship ever. Most of my personal justification for this being a hateship and not just plain hatred comes from the 2010 Takarazuka production, especially the first scene, which I conveniently have a link to: Complete with English subtitles!. Tybalt & Benvolio (and Mercutio) enter at around 3:45. Even if you don't want to go shippy with it, I'd love to see something pre-musical dealing with the bad blood between these two. If you do want to go shippy, feel free to get as explicit or not as you wish.

If you don't want to deal with Tybalt at all, that's fine as well. As I said in my prompt, I'd love something post-musical with Benvolio having to deal with the fact that his best friends (and best enemy) are dead. How does he deal with losing them all so close together? Is he now the de facto heir to the Montague family? What's the fallout from the two families reconciling? How does Benvolio feel about that? If you want to get dark & depressing with this, I'm cool with that idea. I'd rather not see Benvolio die, either by his hand or others, as I find greater tragedy in him having to live with everything.

Ocean's Eleven (musical)
Any

I didn't even know I wanted fic for this until I saw someone else (dybji, I'm looking at you) talking about nominating it. That said, I don't have any real preferences here. I will love anything you write.

More details & me rambling about potential prompts in my letter.

Because I didn't even really know I wanted this until just recently, I don't really know what I want. But I love character focused vignettes, and all of the characters have intriguing backstories I'd love to see explored. I've... not actually seen either version of the movie, and my Japanese is scan enough that I've only got a rough idea of a lot of the characters. So consider that freedom. Write them as they are, as you wish they were or as they could be, I'll still like it. I don't need anything exceptionally plotty - slice of life character pieces are just fine by me, so have fun!

The only thing I absolutely do not want is anything 'redeeming' Benedict. I like him as an out-and-out villan.

Prompt wise... Well, when I first saw this mentioned, it was with the prompt "The Ten Times Rusty Tried To Tell Danny He Loved Him And The One Time Danny Did", which has kind of lodged itself into my brain as something I'd love to read. I'd also love to read anything about Diana - I've been told she was added to the plot mainly for Shirahana Remi, and I think she's an absolutely amazing character.

Sorry I can't offer anything more specific :(

Changeling: The Lost
Any
Changeling the Lost is hands down my favorite of any of White Wolf's game lines. I'm a big fan of the fragile beauty of the changeling's world, the idea that they've endured horrible things, but they're still alive, and they *escaped* and thus there's hope. I'm pretty open about this fandom in terms of what I want as long as that hope is still there.

As usual, more details/ramblings in my letter

With Changeling I've always loved the idea that because of everything they've experienced, they truly understand the wonder and beauty of the everyday experiences that normal people take for granted. I'd love to see a fic that explores that, especially the dealing with the fact that changelings are different now, and nothing is ever the same. But like I said, I do want hope. They've lost their old life, but there's a possibility for a new one.

I'm partial to the Fairest and Beast Seemings as a general rule, and more a fan of the Spring and Winter Courts than the Summer or Fall, but that's a general guideline, not a hard and fast rule.

Happy Thanksgiving!

To all my USA friends/readers/what have you, Happy Thanksgiving! To everyone else, Happy Thursday!

I have always thought Thanksgiving is an exceedingly stereotypical American holiday. I mean the basic premise of the holiday involves sitting down and eating a truly obscene amount of food. Oh, and spending time with one's family. Or avoiding them. And probably watching American football.

Someone in the #yuletide chatroom yesterday said Thanksgiving was "Christmas, except without presents". Which yea, just about sums it up.

No matter the purpose of the holiday however, I have it off of work, so I have a three day weekend! I could have gone down to my parents' house for the holiday, but they're having all of my mom's side of the family over, and I... decided to avoid the crazy. So, as we've done for the past three years, everchangingmuse and I are going out to a restaurant to get our requisite fill of turkey and all the trimmings. Then we'll come home for some tagging and/or movie watching. Not sure exactly what yet.

Ideally, Thanksgiving is about reflecting on the things in life you are thankful for, and while I'll admit to being cynical about those sorts of meaning having gotten lost in the rush of consumerism and all that, I think it is a very good thing to reflect on. So, without further babbling, the things I am thankful for:

My parents, whom I love, and who love and support me.

everchangingmuse, whom I love with all my heart, and who somehow loves me and has put up with me for these past 10+ years.

flower_ballet, for being the most amazing little sister-of-my-heart as well as one of my best friends.

All my other amazing friends, both online and off, who share in, encourage, and/or put up with all my idiosyncrasies.

My job, which not only pays he bills, but I actually don't hate.

Select members of my coworkers who I not only don't hate, but who are actually pretty damn awesome.

Yuletide/#yuletide IRC chat for being the one month of the year when I remember how much fun writing fanfic is

My computer, which despite being almost 5 years old, still runs pretty dang good

And all those other little things that get overlooked. By me. Right not. But that I know I'm still thankful for.

So have a happy day, everyone, and USA-folk - try not to eat too much!

Guess what! Signups for Yuletide are open!

I don't really write or read fanfic much anymore, but Yuletide manages to make me do both. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a fanfic exchange, based on rare/small fandoms. You can request 3-4 fandoms, and you have to offer at least 4 fandoms to write from (there's over 2000 to choose from). Once signups close there's some magic database-y stuff done, and you're matched with someone to write for, and someone's matched with you. But you don't know who, and that's the fun. Fic have to be a minimum of 1k, but that's not that long, I've found. Then they're uploaded, and you get your fic on Christmas day!

Authors aren't revealed until January 1 though, so it's a lot of fun reading and trying to figure who your author is and such.

I've loved it the past two years, and I'd love to encourage more folk to sign up this year! Sign ups run through Sunday

So what am I requesting you might ask? Well, I did say it was a rare fandom exchange...

Fake Cut to My Dear Writer Letter. And thus I have. It's slow going because I'm busy with RP these days (why oh why did I think I could handle five characters?)
So yea, that meme that be going around:

Favourite current otokoyaku? Suzumi Shio, Yuzuki Reon, Ouki Kaname, Makaze Suzuho, Otozuki Kei, Daigo Seshiru, Sou Kazuho
Favourite current musumeyaku? Yumesaki Nene, Shirahana Remi
Favourite OG? Asami Hikaru, Maikaze Rira, Mirai Yuki, Mizu Natsuki, Shirahane Yuri, Hatsukaze Midori, Tsukifune Sarara... Really this list could go on and on.
Favourite musical show? Roméo et Juliette, Datenshi no Namida, Susano-o, Elisabeth,
Favourite revue? Tarantella, Bolero, Wonderland
Prettiest poster? Gah, how can I choose? *refuses to choose*

The hero that makes you swoon? Chie!Jose, Romeo
The villain you want to terrorize you? Death (any, mild preferences for Mizu!Tod or Zunko!Tod), Chauvelin, Lucifer, Teru!Tybalt
The heroine you admire the most? Inadahime, Juliet, Lilith
The song that makes you weak at the knees? "How do I Tell You" from RomiJuli, "When I Dance", the final reprise of "Datenshi no Namida"
The costume you would quite like in your wardrobe?Asa's version of Sisi's Winterhalter dress, anything Death's worn ever, Toyoko's first Benvolio costume.
The costume which is absolutely awful but you secretly love it? ... I don't know really.
The worst costume you have ever seen? Probably one of the eye-searing ones from Revue Orchis
The most pointless Takarazuka related thing you’ve bought? THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A POINTLESS TAKARAZUKA PURCHASE!
Your most prized Takarazuka possession? <strike>all of them</strike> Probably the Elisabeth box
The thing you would most like to own? Every single DVD of Chie & Nene's top star run.
Are you/would you be a fan club member? No, too expensive and I don't have a Japanese address. Besides, how would I choose?
The show that needs to be released that hasn’t been? I'd love a box of Elisabeth shinkos, personally.
The show you wish you’d never seen? It's not a 'wish I'd never seen', so much as a 'have no desire to watch again - Soragumi's Jose & Carmen. The story... It's not a story I like, and I'm not invested enough in most of the cast (like I am with the Hoshi version) to get over/through my discomfort with the story.

Your favourite Zuka related anecdote? That my involvement in this fandom is entirely due to flower_ballet ;)

RPGs, Sexism, Kickstarter and the past ~48 hours

Two pieces of background information before I launch into this story. First, I frequent the forums at RPG.net. I enjoy skimming them to look for interesting information about various tabletop RPGs, see if anyone is selling/trading any interesting books, and occasionally to scan the Tangency subforum for interesting news. I have a high, high opinion of the moderation done there, though there is still a lot of the usual internet nastiness, they try very hard to keep it under control.

Second, I am a big fan of Kickstarter, which is essentially a crowdfunding method for, well, any sort of project one might wish to raise money for. I've backed roughly a dozen RPG-related projects so far, and been really pleased with the whole experience. No money is taken until the funding drive is over and then only if the project has met or exceeded its goal.

So, background information out of the way, story time.

A few days ago, a thread was started on RPG.net with the rather inflammatory title of "A Feminist RPG or Kickstarter Gold Rush in full swing?", referring to a new RPG book on Kickstarter called "Heartbreak and Heroines". I did not dip my toe into that thread, as by the time I noticed it, it had already gotten pretty vitriolic with a few very loud people essentially saying "ZOMG a 'feminist' RPG is an attack on MEN!" and various other variations on the whole "What about the menz!" idiocy that tends to pop up. I did dip my toe in the first thread the creator of the game made to discuss her project, as I thought it looked interesting, but that too was quickly drowned out by "Why does this game even need to exist, RPGs totally aren't sexist!" and ignoring the female posters who were saying "Um, yes they are."
Both of those threads got locked, essentially once the mods woke up and saw the shitstorm. This is good.

A new thread was started to discuss the game, and it's potential mechanics, because if there's one thing RPG.net posters like, it's discussing a game's mechanics. Especially with the creator.

The creator of the game also made a thread about sexism in RPGs, specifically asking for female opinions. That thread became a mess of attacks on both sides and led to a handful of temp bans for personal attacks, including a three-day one for the game creator/original poster of the thread.

Now, at this point I was having some reservations about the fact that I'd thrown money at the Kickstarter, since she was being just as bad as people on the other side of the argument in terms of making really nasty attacks. But y'know I couldn't really disagree with what she was saying, even if I disliked how she was saying it, so I pushed away my misgivings.

For the record, that thread smoothed out and there have been some really productive conversations going on.

However, there was a post in that thread (rightfully yanked quickly by mod action), accusing the game creator of rape. With links to statements by the victim and the victim's friend. Said accusation popped up again on Google+ in a couple of my Circles.

The accusation posts do not read like someone trying to troll. Granted, they could be. But rape is a serious accusation, and I am not comfortable giving money to someone who may have done something so horrible. Especially since Twitter conversations have also come to light where said creator has been very dismissive towards the (alleged) victim, and yet has not made a definitive statement of "No, I did not do this"

So, for the first time, I rescinded my pledge to a game. I can not, rightfully support a project when I have so many misgivings about the creator. If more evidence comes out, and my gut reaction is wrong, I will either pledge again, or make a point to buy the game. But until then, I think I'm making the right decision.

Now if my mind would just stop picking at it.

Yay going to Portland means I got books read!

Book #7 Eon by Alison Goodman - Continuing my love of young adult fantasy novels and my love of girls disguising themselves as boys, I picked this one up at Borders months ago, but only started reading it on the flight out to Portland. Finished it in a day, it was that good. It's very Chinese myth-inspired, but the author has really made the world her own and not just "fantasy China". It's a fascinating story, and the main character is very gripping. She makes many mistakes, all while trying to do what she thinks will help, only to have things go more and more awry. I picked up the sequel at Powell's and am looking forward to how this all turns out.

Book #8 - Family Ties & Torn Skies by various authors, including myself - Well, I figured since I've been doing so much shameless self promotion for this, I should read the whole thing myself. I'd read most of the stories on the Torn World site, but it was neat to read them all in a bunch. As with any anthology there are some stories that are stronger than others, but overall it was very good. And I gained a bit more appreciation for the Northerner culture, which thus far hadn't really grabbed me. I still prefer the Empire, but that's a personal thing. It's also kicked back my desire to write more, which is always a good thing.

Normally I don't cross post these, but I'm going to do so for this one because of my review of Family Ties & Torn Skies. If any LJ-folk wanna see what else I've read this year, hop on over to my Dreamwidth and follow the 'read in 2011' tag.

...because if you can't promote yourself, who can?

Thus, I wish to make everyone aware that preorders are now available for this anthology:

One of those names on that list of contributors is ME!

Thus, you should totally go HERE and preorder yourself a copy. Or two. Or twelve ;) Preorders get the .pdf of the ebook version for free, and immediately! Come on, you know you want to!

Oh, you wanna know what it's about first? Well, the anthology is for the shared world project Torn World, a wonderful collaborative project with a definite steampunk, science fantasy vibe. This is the official blurb from the website:

In a world where time itself has been torn, family is more important than ever.

Explore concepts of kinship - by blood and by choice - in a setting that spans lush rainforests, monster-infested seas, wild valleys, and frozen mountains. Journey between the strictly licensed, steam-powered cities of the southern Empire and the small communal villages in the north that believe they are alone in the world. Meet the varied people and cultures who define family in so many different ways. Glimpse mysteries unique to the temporal structure of Torn World and search for answers to universal questions about belonging and relating.

And heck, if it looks interesting enough, you can even join and help all of us create and explore more of the world!

Or just buy the book. That'll make me happy too]

The weather is beautiful out today. Maybe a little overcast, but without the damned oppressive humidity we've had this past week. I've got all the windows and the patio door open. Probably annoying neighbors with my epic RomiJuli playlist.

Speaking of RomiJuli, I have decided that this man is my husband and should be the father of my children:

I have no logical reason for this, except he's gorgeous and i love his voice. And everchangingmuse approves, so... Now I just need to learn French ;)

In other news, I've discovered a love for men's ribbed tank tops (aka 'wifebeaters'). They're perfect for wearing under my work shirts and for lazing about the house in. Like I'm doing right now. They're also good for wearing while working out. Which is good, because I really am trying to exercise more/get in shape. My parents bought me a Wii Fit for my birthday. My birthday's actually tomorrow, but I opened it today anyway and hooked it up and everything. It's actually quite fun, though my balance sucks, which I knew, and my rhythm is all over the place. So there are a lot of games that are more frustrating than they've worth. But I like the running, strangely enough, and the biking. It's fun, and hopefully it'll help. Even if it did make my mii all chubby :( :(

Well, I've got friends coming up tonight for birthday-weekend fun, so I've got chili in the slow-cooker and I'll get some beer bread in the oven in a bit. I hope this weekend will be as much fun as it looks to be!

Since my last plan to get in shape sorta fizzled, I've been making myself go back to the full, three-days-a-week resistance training program m'lady and I did a few years ago and worked really well. And despite my body currently being in full-on 'I hate doing this so I'ma gonna ache all the time' I've been pretty good about keeping up with it so far. And perversely, I've found it gives me more energy and motivation for the day, and I'm not hitting that 3pm slump where I just want to nap. Which is good because 3pm's when I leave for work most days. I think I can feel myself getting stronger. Not sure how the weight loss is going, but I'm trying not to focus on that aspect.

I've also found that watching Takarazuka revue shows makes the whole routine far more enjoyable. Sparkles and feathers, FTW!

Today I worked out while watching Tarantella, which I think may currently be my favorite revue. Unsurprising, since it's the one attached to my favorite show and has a lot of my favorite 'siennes in it. I was struck, this watch-through by a couple of things.

1> Kimu is subtly amazing. Seriously, you can see in everything she does in the show that she doesn't just hope to become a top star, she knows she will. And she has, I think because she's a very, very deliberate actress, who knows how to make the best use out of Every Single Moment she's on stage. Seriously. She knows how to draw the eye, without upstaging others, which is amazing in and of itself. And the camera loves her.

2> I don't think Maachan sweats. Like, at all. I was watching the end, and there's Komu dripping with sweat, and Maachan, who honestly has been dancing just as hard looks as fresh as a daisy. Well, okay, she is breathing heavy by the end of the number, but that's about it.

3>The end is so beautifully bittersweet, as Komu looks back, and then turns away to walk the rest of the way up the stairs. It's also I think a nice touch that she passes Mizu coming down the stairs. Symbolic passing of the troupe?

Okay, that's enough random ramblings for now. As I do not have Maachan's amazing anti-sweat powers, it is time for my post-workout shower. Yay!

Winning bidders donate to charity. So please bid?

On to the actual entry.

For those who don't know, I have very thick, very nice hair that I keep cut short-ish for ease of dealing with/work. I've had long hair in the past. In college it was down to my midback, and I use to regularly grow it out to roughly shoulder length. Then I realized how much easier it was to deal with when short, especially since working massage means I have to have it out of my face anyway.

So why am I mentioning this?

Well, last week I had two people at work comment about my hair. Now neither of the people are people who's opinions I care much about (there's a big rant coming about one of them soon), but I still found the comments annoying. Basically because both people said "Oh, you would look so pretty if you grew your hair out!", with the very heavy implication that it would make me look more 'feminine'. This needless to say annoyed me quite a bit. And sadly, even though I know I should just ignore them and move on, sadly has continued to annoy me in the back of my mind. Because really, it's neither of these women's business if I look 'feminine' or not. I know it came up because I am due for a hair cut, and my hair's grown out to the point that its a little shaggy, but I'm not sure why it's convinced either of them (neither of whom have ever seen me with long hair) that I should grow it out.

Feh, I could shave my head and I'd still look like a girl. I can't pass as male, even if I wanted to. My hair length or lack there of doesn't make a difference. And even if it did, it's no one's business but mine (and maybe m'lady's) what I choose to look like.

Fuckers.

That said, I am due for a haircut, probably this weekend. And completely unrelated to the idiots' comments, I have been debating getting it cut even shorter than usual so I can do the spiky thing with it. I'm just not sure it'd look good on me, and I'm not sure how to tell. I'm probably thinking way too much about this. After all, if it doesn't look good, it'll always grow out, right?

And thus, being the type of person I am (read: rabid Takarazuka fangirl), I have been turning 'Zuka characters into ponies.

Elisabeth Pony:
<lj-embed id="5" />
Elisabeth Pony by ~palmedfire on deviantART

Der Tod Pony:
<lj-embed id="6" />
Tod Pony by ~palmedfire on deviantART

Rudolf Pony:
<lj-embed id="7" />
Rudolf Pony by ~palmedfire on deviantART

And finally, getting away from Elisabeth for the moment, an angry, angry Tybalt Pony:
<lj-embed id="8" />
Tybalt Pony by ~palmedfire on deviantART
