Message from The Director

Welcome Message  Bangladesh is predominantly an agricultural country where agriculture sector plays a vital role in accelerating the economic growth. It is therefore important to have a profitable, sustainable and environment-friendly agricultural system in order to ensure long-term food security for people. Broad agriculture sector has been given the highest priority in order to make Bangladesh self sufficient in food. One of the most important geographical characteristics of Bangladesh is abundance of wetland ecosystem or haor. There are about 373 haors located in the districts of Sunamgonj, Sylhet, Moulivibazar, Habigonj, Kishoregonj, Netrokona and Brahmanbaria covering about 1.99 million hectares (19,998 sq. km) which is around 13.56% of the total area of Bangladesh that accommodating about 19.37 million people. On the other hand, about 6.5 million people lives in char land of Bangladesh with an area of ​​about 720,000 hectare. It is difficult to foresee the country’s overall progress without the development of haor and char regions as they cover a major part of the country as well as populations which deserves special development initiatives. Therefore, priority should be given to improve the livelihood of the haor and chars inhabitants by bringing the huge lands and natural resources of the haor and char areas into planned agricultural research that ultimately make an enormous contribution to the economic development of the country. Considering the role of haor and char regions in socio-economic development of Bangladesh, His Excellency the President, People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Md. Abdul Hamid, laid foundation stone of the country’s first “Haor and Char Development Institute” at BAU on 22 July, 2018. The establishment of this institute and its outreach station would play a pivotal role in reducing poverty, improving livelihood and food security of the haor and char dwellers. You are most welcome to our greenly campus of Bangladesh Agricultural University as the largest and oldest university of agricultural education.
