What is a Handpan / Hang?
The Hang is a remarkable musical instrument from the idiophone family, first created in Switzerland. Its distinct 'UFO shape' comes from two nitrided steel shells joined together, creating a hollow acoustic chamber that acts as a Helmholtz resonator.
The top side, called the "Ding", features a central note and seven or eight surrounding 'tone fields'. Each field is carefully hammered to produce a specific pitch.
The bottom side, or "Gu", has a hole in the center that produces a deep, resonant bass note when the rim is struck.
This unique construction gives the Handpan its soul-stirring, resonant, and peaceful sound that has captivated people worldwide.
