First things first, NEW HEADER and NEW PROFILE GRAPHICS. I was gonna keep the community into Tales stuff but uhhhh this picture is too COOL LOOKING. 8)

Secondly, Persona 3 only post! ♥ The reason for the different styles is because the second style that will be shown later in the post (after the newer style) looked too much like my Phoenix Wright icons, even though I didn’t use the same technique. O_o ALSO and I guess perhaps more specifically, a lot of the details were washed out, imo. Sooo I decided to try some things out and ended up liking the result. So thus, I mass-produced Persona 3 art in the newer style.

Sorry if you don’t dig it! I uploaded the older technique for your convenience for the main party, save for the protagonist. Everyone else is strictly gray background.

These are drabbles that were requested by some friends of mine~! But I guess that doesn't mean anyone else watching this community can't read. :x In fact, please do! CRITIIIIIIQUE IS WELCOME DX;

For scientific;; ♥ ~ Papillon/Kazuki;; ~~deargodIhopethisisokay~~

The only thing worse than Papillon in his bathing suit was Papillon wearing absolutely nothing at all. The group had been at the beach for another summer vacation and this time, Papillon had insisted on joining them. Even though he hadn’t booked a room like the rest of them, he followed Kazuki back to his room in order to change.

And without warning, change he did. Though he seemed to have forgotten whatever it was he was going to change into.

“Chouno! You can’t just do that, you know,” Kazuki lectured after slamming the door shut. He waited to hear the sound of rustling clothes so he would be able to turn around again, but it wasn’t coming. Still, he stalled for time. “What if Tokiko-san or Mahiro saw you like that?”

It was then he heard the creaking of his bed and, with devastation written all over his face, Kazuki saw that the older teen had settled on his mattress like he owned it himself. He sighed and turned back around as Papillon, who had his arms behind his head on the pillow, wiggled on the bed. “What if~? So what! So long as I have my mask on, it doesn’t matter what they see of me.”

Kazuki knew better than to ask, but he couldn’t help it. Turning slightly once more, he wanted to know. “… What about me? I’ve seen you without your mask on.”

“That was when I was still a mere caterpillar,” Papillon said plainly, his eyes on his long nails. “I have a lot more to offer than just my face now~! And everything’s in your plain sight, Mutou~…”

Kazuki could practically feel the color leaving his face. “… Thanks for that, but I’m still an exception, right? Can I see, since I have before?” Even with the mask on, Kazuki could plainly see the look of horror and disgust on Papillon’s face that was volumes louder than any “NO!” he could have shouted. Kazuki swallowed and faced the door again. “All right, all right. Anyway, if you need something to change into, I’ll see if the hotel has any spare bathrobes you can—”

“Mutou.”

Although his hand was on the door’s handle, Kazuki halted and once again, looked back at Papillon. The strange homunculus had one thumb underneath his elegant mask, though he was otherwise still. The brunette stared at him, unsure if the other was going to do anything or not. Then, completely contrasting his serious face from moments before, Papillon licked his lips and beckoned Kazuki over with a slender finger.

“…~ You’ll have to do something special for me. ♥”

It wasn’t until much later, when Mahiro was giggling uncontrollably and slapping his back like he had done something amazing, did Kazuki regret forgetting to lock the damn door.

For unlock;; ~ Jade/Dist;; replica, forbidden, substitute, lies ~~though I didn’t use those words exactly, maybe 8DD;;~~

Saphir had first been excited about being asked about his research long after Jade had disappeared, especially since no one had been interested before. The one who asked him was a fairly large man, with an even larger ambition in his eyes than Saphir had ever seen in himself… even more than Jade.

No, that wasn’t true. Nothing could have been greater than Jade.

Nevertheless, it seemed this Van Grants had a use for Saphir, and the words “I need” and “you” had not graced his ears for such a long time he agreed without much thought to it. It wasn’t as though he felt he couldn’t do what Van asked. All he had ever wanted was to continue researching, if only until Jade noticed him again.

Van had provided information that Saphir lacked, and the combination of that and the research Jade and he had done up until that point was the final piece of the puzzle. The young scientist went over the notes and schematics many times and everything seemed flawless – at least, in theory. Making it happen would be more difficult. Saphir wondered if he could do it, when even Jade had failed many times before.

So when the latest test subject, a yellow cheagle, became a healthy two rather than one, Saphir doubted how real it was. There was no way it could have gone so perfectly. He had failed so many times with Jade! The professor had remained dead all this time, and the humans Jade and Saphir had worked on would always fail, or at the very best, die immediately after being replicated, or came out disfigured either in body or mind.

However, in this case, with Van’s new information, the original was still asleep, heart rate normal, and would probably wake up shortly while the replica yawned quietly, looking to get comfortable in his spot on the enormous fon machine. The two were exactly the same, proved by both fonic charts on a screen nearby as well as the plain sight of the two cheagles next to each other. The replica blinked up at the shaking Saphir with large eyes, confused.

“… mieu?”

It said no more, for Saphir quickly reached over and put his hands around the monster’s neck. “Why?! Why couldn’t I have done this for Jade?!!” he screamed and in his fervor, he unintentionally shook the already suffocating cheagle. It wouldn’t matter much longer anyway. “I’ve finally gotten the right— it’s too late now!! He’s gone! Why couldn’t I have accomplished this sooner?! He never would have left!!”

By the time he realized what he was doing, the cheagle was already dead. Saphir quickly brought his hands away and panted, half out of exhaustion, and half out of fear.

“Dist,” came a deep voice at the other end of the room. It had been about an hour after Saphir had cleaned up, so from behind several flasks, the white-haired man addressed Van.

“… it lived this time for several minutes before its… fonons separated and it died instantly.” He lied a little too quickly, and perhaps Van knew, but ‘the Reaper’ did not care. “One more try should be enough.”

For rixis;; Xigbar & Demyx

Duels with Xigbar never went well for Demyx, not at all. Any time he sent water off in the other man’s direction, Xigbar opened a warp space and caught each spray of water into it, re-opening the space right over Demyx and getting him soaked instead. The saddest thing, Xigbar thought, was that the kid would keep doing the same thing again anyway. It always ended with Demyx being absolutely drenched while Xigbar had barely even suffered a mere drop of water.

Demyx knew he wasn’t cut out for fighting, but Xigbar always insisted on dueling the teen anyway. The ninth member always ended up losing, and even while he himself lost hope of ever beating Xigbar, the Freeshooter never gave up on him.

“C’mon, kid,” he said as he looked down from his perch on a high windowsill. Demyx was squeezing water out of various parts in his coat and perhaps ignoring the other. “All you need to do is figure out another way to use your stuff.”

“Marluxia had a great idea,” Demyx sighed. He was bad at ignoring people, apparently. “He said I could water his plants.”

Xigbar laughed at that and hopped down from where he had been. He slung an arm around Demyx and said, “You always attack from one direction and you tend to have a pattern about it, too. It makes it too easy to read what you’re going to do.” Demyx still seemed to be trying to ignore him, but Xigbar kept trying anyway. “Mix it up a little! Fake ‘em out, move around, make it impossible to dodge or defend against. And don’t take any breaks, either, an—”

He was interrupted as Demyx ducked out from his grip – but more so by the surge of water that splashed onto him from above. He stood, confused, as Demyx laughed out loud, clutching his midsection as if it were going to burst.

“Or just catch the enemy off guard, right?”

It wasn’t long after that when Xigbar dumped a frazzled Demyx out from a warp point into Marluxia’s chambers with a sign hanging around his neck that read “Waterboy for Hire.”

For infringe;; Zelos/Lloyd;; bubbles

There had been a peculiar sound coming from Lloyd’s direction after Zelos had turned his back to the brunette. Blinking owlishly, the older man turned his head to find that Lloyd was blowing bubbles into the milk Colette had given him through his straw.

He must have been doing it on purpose, for Zelos noted that stupid look on his face, the one that seemed to settle whenever he was trying to do something he figured was important, but really wasn’t.

Zelos found himself staring. It wasn’t until Lloyd spotted his watcher with big, curious eyes did the Chosen even realize. It was difficult, at first, to come up with an answer when Lloyd asked him why he had been ogling.

Well, maybe not. “I was just a little surprised, that’s all,” he said with the normal fluidity in his voice. Smirking, he tapped the window behind him with the back of his fist. “Is that what you bumpkins do for fun on rainy days? … That is just so sad.”

“We do not! And who are you calling a bumpkin?”

Their bickering went on for a little while until Sheena finally silenced them in her curt, polite way, though the two spent the rest of lunch grinning at each other, regardless of the fact that they had just ‘fought.’ Sheena left them, vowing that she would never understand the minds of idiots, and Zelos left in a hurry to redeem himself in some way.

He was disappointed the next morning, though, when he found that blowing bubbles into his cup of coffee did not work so well.

For lightbulby;; Dist;; moving forward

It was one of the rare nights where Jade had fallen asleep before Saphir, though the white-haired teen had expected it from the brunette’s reasoning for not forcing Saphir out of his clothes and onto the bed. He had turned him down on the account that he’d been too tired and that was all Saphir needed to hear to believe him, though seeing proof of it this time made him feel a little better about going to bed with an empty feeling in his stomach.

On these rare occasions where Saphir had nothing to do other than watch the breathing of his sleeping friend, he fantasized about when the two of them would bring the professor back from the dead and how everything would be as it should again. He would be able to watch from his comfortable sideline as Jade and Prof. Nebilim worked their magic on the blackboard. Occasionally, he would help, but Saphir was content with just watching.

It suddenly felt very cold in the room.

Saphir slinked under the covers, turned out the lights, and stared up at the ceiling for a moment or two. Hesitantly, he reached over and started to stroke Jade’s hair, being very careful not to disturb him. “… even if you pay a little more attention to the professor, it’s okay,” he said, then swallowed. “… It’s okay.”

For lightbulby;; Guy;; looking back

Luke was busy with the royal doctor that afternoon after suffering a great deal from what had begun as his ‘usual’ headache, so Guy more or less had the rest of the day off from babysitting. His kindness wouldn’t allow him to feel grateful for the time, but it was a little refreshing, laying down idly on his bed with his arms crossed under his head and just thinking to himself. He had nothing else to do, so after a while, he determined that the quiet was the only thing he was grateful for.

Pere must have been busy out in the garden, for not only was he missing from their shared room, but as were the plant pots he’d been storing things in. Guy rolled over on his bed and smiled a little. Pere had begun to treasure flowers shortly after their escape from Hod, when they arrived in St. Binah. Guy had not seen the town since he was brought to Baticul, but he could still imagine and see in his mind the sight of all of the flowers around the inn they stayed at, the feel of the petals, and the brightness they brought into the room Pere hid the young lord within.

Thinking on it, flowers were probably the first things that brought a smile back to the boy’s face. The placid look that rested on Guy’s face wiped off and in its place settled curious realization.

Gailardia sat up and swung his body over so that his feet were pressing into the carpet beneath. That didn’t last long – soon he was across the room, searching for that spare pair of gloves the elder man kept and hoping they would fit his larger hands. It was a close enough fit, though would not be for a very long time, so he hurried out of the room and met up with the man outside, wearing the kind sort of smile Pere used to give him, the one full of small hope, of trying to be contagious around one who forgot how, the one that hid the suffering he went through. The one Guy eventually learned and mastered himself.

It was with this smile he said, “I thought you might need some help.”

For cybersky;; Nel/Clair;;

Nel was staring down at a slip of parchment that detailed the damage Arias had suffered during the most recent attack from Airyglyph when she felt thin arms wrap around her shoulders. She couldn’t help but smile and lean back into the touch, looking up to her lover’s face.

“It’s getting late,” said Clair, her arms unmoving despite her trying to be stern with the other woman. “Don’t you want some supper?”

“I’m all right,” Nel assured her with a pat to her arms. She leaned forward again, the smile on her face washing away. “Though I’m worried about how we’re going to defend against the next attack. It took all of our manpower alone to stop this latest attack by the Storm Brigade… if they send in the Dragon Brigade, we—”

“We’ll find a way, Nel.” Clair took a seat next to the redhead and craned her neck a bit to see what was written down. She, too, frowned. “… What we need to do is push them back to Kirlsa. It’s unfortunate that they pulled a surprise attack… we’re at a great disadvantage here.”

Nel nodded, though Clair was unsure that the woman was even listening. Perhaps it was more that she already knew what they had to do and what sort of situation they were in. She sighed softly, wanting so badly to tell Nel that she should rest anyway but not being able to. After all, Nel had told her before that the only way she would be able to relax at this point would be to keep going without rest, except of course when she was in absolute need of it. There was still sunlight out, so Nel wouldn’t be going to bed for some time, but Clair wished she would at least rest her eyes.

The woman gaped just a little when she felt Nel’s hand upon her cheek, and blinked over to her. Nel was hiding half of her face beneath her scarf, but her eyes were all Clair needed to see to understand what was going on in that head of hers. Still, Nel spoke. “I don’t like seeing you so unhappy.”

“I don’t like seeing you stressing out like this,” Clair said honestly as her own hand raised to touch Nel’s. “I know you don’t like hearing it, but…”

“Come here.”

It was a soft command, or as soft as Nel could be. Used to it, Clair smiled and leaned forward to press her forehead against Nel’s, sighing contentedly. The hand that had been against her cheek moved down and around the woman’s shoulder, though Nel used her other hand to push the papers away.

“I think tonight would be a good night to relax.”

For tsurugi;; Guy/Luke;; younger

“Guy!”

The first person Luke re-learned the name of was Guy, though it had been a mix up at first. Any time a person smiled at him, he would cheer the name of his closest servant, much to the confusion of anyone who wasn’t said servant. It didn’t take Guy long to understand what the problem was coming from and attempted to fix it, even if he wasn’t quite sure how.

“Your name is Luke, right?” Guy asked as he twirled a fancy hand-mirror in his hands. The boy blinked and nodded slowly, as if expecting it to turn out to be a trick question or a joke or something. Guy put down the mirror and faced him. “Right. And you’re the only one. Also, you can’t be anyone but Luke, right?” Another nod. “Good!”

And then without warning, the teen grabbed at Luke’s sides, tickling the boy playfully. This wasn’t unusual for either, so young Luke laughed as much as he was able, all the while reaching for Guy in attempts to tickle him right back. This continued until both were separate, laughing on the floor and trying otherwise to catch their breath. Eventually, even though Luke was still giggling, Guy sat up and reached for the mirror he had brought into the room with him and showed its face to Luke.

The redhead knew how mirrors worked, so wasn’t at all confused at the grinning him staring back at him. Even so, he said, “Guy.”

“Nope, remember?” the servant said, facing the mirror to himself. “I’m Guy, and you’re Luke. You can’t be Guy if you’re Luke!”

Now he did seem confused. He brought a finger up to his lips and stared up at the blonde, looking for answers. Guy, too, brought a finger to his own lips and traced it along as his lips raised into a smile. “This is a smile, Luke. Everyone can smile, not just Lukes, and not just Guys.”

“Smile…” Luke repeated, then proceeded to try it out himself. The mirror was turned back in his direction so he would be able to see and he giggled outright at the sight of it. Even though he was absolutely beaming, Guy had a distant look on his face as he watched the younger boy practice facial expressions in the mirror. It was as though –

Nah. Luke knew how to smile before then, he just didn’t know what it was called.

Bonus! Albel/Fayt;;

Panting, Fayt looked up to Albel, a tiny bit of drool (not even his own, probably) still present near the edge of his lips. Albel was sitting up and had been since they were finished, his eyes burning into the sheets he used to cover himself up afterwards. Fayt remained mostly uncovered, but he was too hot to accept sheets at the moment anyway. Beads of sweat slicked the majority of his skin—and Albel’s, too—so the afterglow was almost visible as the two glimmered in the soft light of the room.

Chest down into the mattress, Fayt swallowed and wiped at his mouth a little, shakily putting more weight onto his hands as he tried to sit up. He was silent for another few moments as he stared at Albel (who seemed to be ignoring him) until he gave up and allowed his head to sink down slowly into the pillow again. However, much to his surprise, Albel gingerly picked up the boy’s head and placed it into his lap, fingers—charred and regular—stroking his hair. His expression was gradually becoming softer, but it was something only Fayt could see.

When Saphir first saw Jade, his first thought was that he was so very tidy, that even his clothes, although worn throughout the day, were without the mere suggestion of wrinkles. Jade was elegant in the way boys ought not to be – he did not shout or run – he strode and raised a tender voice (tender being the word of choice from Saphir). The Balfour was somewhat of a well-known name, but not overly so outside of Keterburg, so the family’s wealth was not such an extreme that Jade’s behavior should be so different from the rest.

Still, he had an air about him that made it known he was something unordinary and there was a look in his eyes that Saphir himself felt he knew well, which tied in with his second thought about this Jade Balfour whom was spoken about in murmurs among some of the adults and even more of the children.

He must be lonely, too.

So my good friend glorious got bored one day, one lonely day, and decided to send me some Tales of the Abyss manga stuffs. My favorite of the stories, naturally ~~with the lack of Jade and Dist-centric things~~ was the Guy mini-manga thing. GUH. ♥ Totally re-ignited my BURNING LOVE for Guy Cecil. XD

... these... took... forever. Not the styling of the icon, but ERASING ALL OF THE STRAY BACKGROUND PART OF THE SPRITES. *shakes fist* But! I feel I did a job well done.

Someone had requested an animation of an earlier icon I made, but these took long enough to make and I need my life back. D: Also, animations can be found on Court Records, I believe...?

Not all characters are in this, but a HUGE amount are. Some were missing sprites on the Court Record websites, others I felt... 'who will want an icon of this person?' The 5th case in PW1 seems to have the most popular witnesses, so I made sure to do all of them. The rest will have to be requested I'm afraid.

8D Fifth post and I say ICONS ARE FOR LOSERS WITH TIME ON THEIR HANDS. SO INSTEAD, I BRING YOU EVEN MORE TIME CONSUMING CRAP.

:F Here is my Zelos/Lloyd claim for 1sentence. Spoilers for Tales of Symphonia within, as well as me dorkily bringing in a tidbit or two from real-life Lloydisms of mine as well as RP goofiness at polychromatic. I'm clearly the coolest kid in the world.

Without further ad... hesitation~~

He would still think of his mother – never couldn’t – but the guilt seemed to chip away with every snowball he threw at Lloyd.

Lloyd took note of the unopened presents Zelos had in various rooms of his mansion and determined that Zelos needed more than a boxed gift to be happy.

“You can run,” Lloyd had told him in Flanoir, but Zelos found that he forgot how to once the brunette reunited with him in Derris Kharlan.

“To my sidekick, in hopes he’ll always be good for a laugh,” Zelos raised his glass with an obvious wink, but Lloyd refused to toast to something like that.

It was close to midnight the night in Heimdall, where Zelos discarded all fronts and told Lloyd exactly how he felt – about some things, anyway.

Of all the times he could have touched it, Lloyd’s fingers trailed over Zelos’ Cruxis Crystal; with their shirts off, it was hard not to notice the gem.

The tower Zelos used to fear could be seen from Sybak and many other places, but it was gone now, and he had Lloyd to thank for it.

Zelos couldn’t help but laugh when Lloyd continuously, growing more and more frustrated, tried to use the Sorcerer’s Ring ability that it had back in Ymir Forest later at a camp site.

Lloyd was reluctant to join the Chosen, but moments after feeling the sheets against his flesh, he forgot all of the reasons for his hesitation.

Zelos thought the idea was stupid, but nevertheless he brought his headband down over his eyes and started counting to thirty while Lloyd ran off to hide.

There was an unspoken message in the smile Zelos gave to Lloyd once he returned to his side in the Tower of Salvation – I’ll never leave you again.

#18 – Dream
Before Lloyd joined him under warm sheets, Zelos found that he no longer had nightmares, despite there being images in his dreams.

A while ago, Zelos had lit candles in hopes of setting a certain mood, but instead, they had put his brunette friend to sleep.

#20 – Talent
“Well, you act like there’s nothing wrong even when there is,” Lloyd said to him, and Zelos was amazed at the brunette’s knack for reading him like a damn book.

#21 – Silence
As he looked around Flanoir, Zelos couldn’t help but keep silent in memory of his mother, but immediately afterwards would laugh as he thought of the young man who informed the Chosen that it would be all right.

While looking at Lloyd tend to what would soon be a great tree, Zelos knew his own journey was far from over – he still had very much to learn.

Zelos once told Lloyd that everyone has a fire somewhere in their body, something that keeps them going, and explained his was in his head, while Lloyd’s was in his heart; Lloyd disagreed and tapped Zelos’ chest, insisting his fire was in his heart, too.

#24 – Strength
Lloyd was firm in many ways, emotionally, physically, mentally; he would always tell Zelos that he had similar qualities, but the redhead would always disagree, saying he had a long way until he was no longer weak.

#25 – Mask
Sheena wasn’t stupid – she knew very well that Zelos wore a different face for each person he was with, and it was hard not to wish that the face he wore for Lloyd was the one he wore for her instead.

#26 – Ice
Zelos couldn’t decide what was redder: the marks on his hands from his fall on the ice or the blush that came from Lloyd laughing at him.

#27 – Fall
After Zelos caught Sheena while she was falling, he ignored her first question about his wings and instead answered her second; “I guess I’m just not ready to lose Lloyd as a friend.”

#28 – Forgotten
Cress knew very little about the true origins of the great tree Yggdrasill, about the struggle that tied two worlds together; long before him, however, Lloyd told Zelos that he did not want to be known as a ‘hero.’

#29 – Dance
“I should be less surprised that you don’t know how to dance,” Zelos smirked, his voice traced with laughter after Lloyd had tripped up and fallen into him.

#30 – Body
As Mithos took over his body, Zelos was laughing at himself, embarrassed after he’d made obvious just how special Lloyd was to him.

#31 – Sacred
Zelos hesitated as he gazed at the body underneath him, as if he no longer wanted to touch – taint – the person who meant so much to him.

#32 – Farewells
Even with his experiences with Alicia and the other souls trapped in Cruxis Crystals and Expsheres alike, Lloyd knew that the hardest thing he ever had to do was to fulfill Zelos’ final request.

#33 – World
No matter what he named it, this was Lloyd’s world – no, Zelos had to remind himself, it was everyone’s world.

#34 – Formal
Zelos misunderstood the smile Lloyd graced him with the night of the formal dinner, deeming the ‘smug’ grin one of jealousy rather than of desire.

#35 – Fever
Zelos thought Lloyd was putting up far too much of a fuss when the Chosen came down with a fever, but as he lay in bed warm under the sheets, consciousness fading, he couldn’t help but feel grateful for the concern.

#36 – Laugh
It was painful hearing Zelos laugh as he pulled out his sword – to fight against what could have instead been his.

#37 – Lies
It was as if all of the lies he told materialized; as he stood apart from them, his wings were his message to Lloyd never to trust him.

#38 – Forever
Raine was always a wise person, wise enough to see the lasting effects Lloyd had on a certain redhead; she’d been put off by Zelos at first, but no longer.

#39 – Overwhelmed
Lloyd gazed at the giant tree, wondering if he really could keep it alive, but when a gloved hand twined with and squeezed his, the fear, uncertainty, and lack of confidence dissipated almost immediately.

#40 – Whisper
As Pronyma and Colette started to vanish, Zelos had his back to the group and wondered if Lloyd could hear him apologizing again and again under his breath.

#41 – Wait
When Lloyd vanished suddenly, Zelos calmly convinced himself that he had only to wait for him and everything would be all right again; the man was rather confused when Lloyd finally reappeared with Colette and Sheena at either side, but refrained from asking.

#42 – Talk
Lloyd sat with his back against the locked bathroom door, arms folded over bent knees, with Zelos outside the room and mimicking the brunette’s position quite perfectly; they were distracting each other through idle conversation instead of addressing the issue of what the hell to do with these feelings.

#43 – Search
Everyone else seemed to have a set purpose with their lives after the worlds were reunited, but Lloyd knew that if he didn’t take Zelos along on his journey to find Exspheres, the man wouldn’t have anything to hold onto.

#44 – Hope
Maybe it was because Lloyd made him laugh, smile, and made something inside him ache; whatever it was, Zelos knew Lloyd would be the one to correct all of the errors in the world, and in Zelos’ life itself.

#45 – Eclipse
Lloyd sighed softly, his eyes turning from a sleeping body behind him and instead looking up to the darkening moons; he was grateful to see it, but he always liked the tint the light of the moons gave to Zelos’ skin.

#46 – Gravity
When Zelos tried to tell Lloyd that zero gravity would make things more interesting while having certain amounts of fun with a girl, he found that words did little convincing whereas actions did much more.

#47 – Highway
In another place, another time, Zelos knew letting Lloyd handle directions was a bad idea when the car they were driving nearly entered the highway from the wrong side – through the opposite, ‘DO NOT ENTER’ side of an exit ramp, to be exact.

#48 – Unknown
The idea that Tethe’alla had a Chosen of its own was strange to Lloyd, as it was something he never had considered before; this fact might have had a lot to do with why Lloyd never saw Zelos as the Chosen and instead as himself.

#49 – Lock
The Dwarven trained youth could easily break into the room, but he knew that if Zelos needed time to himself, Lloyd would grant it in hopes that the problem would later be resolved.

#50 – Breathe
Lloyd was on his side, carefully stroking Zelos’ hair as the man slept and admiring his frame rising and falling; he briefly wondered how long they would breathe in unison like this.

This is an essay on whether or not life has meaning that I wrote for my Philosophy of the Human Nature class this semester. It was based off of an article that supports the same view I do.

It was brought up in class today, and the fact that there are so many people who don't see life as meaningful makes me want to burst, so...

Yeah, y'all get an essay. This *is* an art journal after all. hur hur.

Warning, it's seven pages long on Word. Well, that's double-spaced, because everything in college is double spaced. Unfortunately, due to the fact that my screen is different from other screens, and your screen is also different from others, I can't exactly double space this without having the formating all retarded. SORRY D:

Um, dunno if I need to say this, but... don't steal this essay and call it your own work. *shrug* It's the internet, anything can happen.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself,” says an unknown author on a mug I have back in my room. I like to think that we as humans can create masterpieces out of each and every one of the days we live, and even if we have bad days, or were not quite able to make that masterpiece, what we were able to create would still matter and remain a part of us forever, or at least until the paint dries and we can paint something better and more memorable over it. After reading his article, I would think David Schmidtz would agree with both the mug and me, especially when he states that he, too, believes life is like a painting. Even knowing that one cannot paint forever, he trusts that people will be able to determine how they paint and what they paint. It is not what is on the canvas in the end that matters, it is how one worked on the painting up until the point where the brush was taken away. The painting may or may not be done, but it will still have meant something to the painter and those who viewed the masterpiece (108).

Perhaps a better metaphor for life is a mosaic. Each and every action we partake in, each person, and each thought of ours weaves its way into a large mosaic map. Up close, the art may look like a collection of blotches and mess, but when looked at from far away, it is well perceived as a beautiful thing. That beautiful thing is life and its meaning, while the up-close view is composed of the experiences we have as they are happening; this theory is similar to Schmidtz’s idea that life is like a quilt, where each instance or person creates a different patch on the quilt, and whether we finish the quilt or not, it means something to the people around us as well as ourselves (108). Confucius’ idea of harmony is similar to this — although his ‘quilt’ was more along the lines of every life being part of one giant quilt, rather than each life having its own quilt. Confucius believed that one’s actions, thoughts, and state of mind should be in harmony with each other as well as in harmony with things outside of one’s own self. One of Confucius’ problems was how little trust there was between peoples—family, friends, and strangers alike. Relationships, according to Confucius, are what keep life — or the quilt — from coming undone. Therefore, in at least this aspect, Schmidtz and Confucius agree that there is meaning to how we live our lives. We should remain in harmony as best we can with ourselves and others, and keep on adding patches to our quilts.

Hinduism, to me, almost seems to view life negatively, as though the sole purpose of living is to die. Or perhaps a less exaggerated way to put it would be to say that Hinduism makes it seem like the entire time we are living, we are preparing ourselves to die. If life is to be looked at like that, then yes, it may be a little hard to find meaning in such a thing. To argue this, I go back to Schmidtz’s idea of the painting. He said that no matter when the brush was taken from a person, the painting that remained afterwards still had meaning to those who allowed it to (108). The point of the painting should not be to make it so grand by the time you finish it, but instead to make a well-balanced painting that we work on day-to-day so it amounts to something acceptable regardless of when we stop. We should be able to look at our painting every day, no matter how little progress we’ve made with it, and feel satisfied. If Hinduism regards life as a pointless, frustrating state that prevents a being from death, then I do not see myself as a very good Hindu. In class, we discussed that many Westerners are afraid of death, while in Hinduism, death is regarded as a salvation of sorts. Generalizations aside, can it instead be said that it is not death we fear, but rather the end of life? Death is natural, we should not fear it, but I believe it is okay to be a little anxious about life ending. Can they be regarded as two different fears?

“Closer to the truth: we can’t enjoy what we insist on seeing as pointless. Part of what makes life meaningful is that we are able to treat it as meaningful. We are able and willing… (Schmidtz, 100)” This is an awesome thing to say on Schmidtz’s part. It is a pretty big decision to choose between living with meaning or without — it determines how one lives his or her life everyday. To one extreme, those who live their lives as though life is meaningless may show less appreciation for themselves and/or those around them. Again, this is an extreme case, but nevertheless, it should be considered in the meaning vs. no meaning argument. Not making ourselves out to look like barbarians could be just one aspect to someone’s life’s meaning, or life’s meaning in general. If we cannot even give ourselves (or our lives) meaning, then how can we be expected to give other things meanings? And if those things do not have meanings, what is to stop us or anything else from destroying it? It was agreed that slavery and racism was wrong due to the fact that it was inhumane—most slave drivers and the general public viewed slaves and Africans as non-humans. Does this not mean that those slave drivers regarded slaves to have no life meaning? If one person views another without meaning, then it becomes a thing — perhaps even an obstacle to be removed. That does not seem like an ideal way to live life.

It is true that different things can have different meanings to different people. One person may view a large mountain as just a mountain, while a painter views it as his or her next project or as an intricate valley of colors, or while a hiker can view it as another journey under his or her belt, and a fine feat at that. One does not even have to be either of those to appreciate what life shows us: for example, I am not someone who enjoys outdoor activities, but I can look at a mountain and wonder if one day my uncle will climb it. I know that he is someone who enjoys getting out and up there. To my uncle, mountains are not only a journey to climb, but they are a way that he finds inner peace. He has told me many times that when he climbs by himself, he is his worst enemy, that he is constantly arguing with himself over whether or not he should turn back, or how it is much too high and he is getting much too old for this. However, when he makes it to a higher place, a resting ground, and he looks at all the world below him, that other part of him is silenced. Once he makes it to that high ground, he is able to think in the quiet of the wilderness, and to enjoy whatever landscape lies ahead. Therefore, mountains mean different things to him than to someone like me, who does not like hiking. Nevertheless, I can appreciate that mountains mean something to him, and in part, I view them differently—a patch of my uncle’s quilt has thus twined with mine even though we do not climb the mountains together. I do not need to be there with him as he is hiking to understand when he tells me of the great things he sees. The patch of the quilt is shared regardless.

Schmidtz tells a story about how he and his wife went to a Glow Worm Grotto in New Zealand one time. He says that his wife and he stood there in the darkness, looking at the soft, almost starry light of the worms and just enjoyed it, both the breathtaking sight itself and the fact that they were able to share the experience together. The fact that the starry glows actually belong to ugly worms that use the glow to attract bugs to eat is irrelevant to the experience that Schmidtz and his wife shared. They do not find it meaningful because the worms eat bugs, they find it meaningful because it is something they shared together. He goes on to say that were he there with another person or by himself, it would not have meant the same thing — if it even would have meant anything at all. It would have been just a pretty cave of carnivorous worms (99-100). This is the same thing as I explained previously, about how mountains can be mountains, or they can be journeys. Humans give things meaning; it is natural, and we give things meaning whether we want to or not. It is one thing to go out and buy yourself chocolates, while it is another if your significant other (or even just a friend) buys them for you. Why is this? The object remains the same. The currency spent remains the same. Any way one looks at it, it should be regarded as the same thing, yet it is not. This is because whoever receives the chocolate regards it not as ‘just chocolate,’ but as a gift given to them to benefit or bring about a certain emotion—or whatever, really. A gift can be given for thousands of different meanings, while something one buys on his or her own is limited to very few. While it is true that one can treat him or herself to something, it almost always seems to mean more (either a little or a lot) if the gift is given by another. A person can still have patches of his/her quilt that s/he worked on alone thanks to the relationships we hold within ourselves, but I feel that most of the patches are given from another person. Each of has the power to give an experience to another’s quilt, or at least change how one already made patch turns out. The different patches can therefore always be changed, and can always mean different things depending on the experience threaded within and/or the person giving the patch.

When I was in my freshman year of high school, I was ignorant of just about everything. I did not place meaning in very many things, and life was beginning to look more and more like a burden rather than a wonderful thing. It is safe to say that I was probably very suicidal, and I feel okay talking about it now because I have grown up and away from that point in my life. Getting back on track, I believe I was so miserable because there was nothing I found meaning in. Yes, I had friends, but it all felt very superficial, as if the only reason I had those friends was because we just happened to know each other from middle school. My state during that year makes the point Schmidtz was trying to say even more true: because my life seemed to have no meaning, it was like I was not living at all. It was not until I found meaning, or rather, gave my life meaning through writing and a wonderful arts academy, did I find peace. My ‘hate-all’ attitude changed drastically, I started to appreciate friends and family more, and I began to view life as something to really be appreciated. I learned that I was lucky to have been given the chance to go to that art school and each and every day and I became more and more grateful to the school. I can definitely say that school saved my life — not to say that I necessarily would have ever killed myself or anything so morbid, but it saved my life in the aspect that I was heading for a very bleak future, one that is so separate from who I am now. In that regard, giving my life meaning is what saved me.

And that, I believe, is how it should be. There are many things I find meaning in today, much more so than I did back then. Life has so many things to offer and we need to take those things for what they are, and try to find meaning in them. If one cannot find meaning in one thing, he or she can find meaning in another. It is a nicer way of saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure;” broken down, this is to say that things have different meanings to different people, which is what Schmidtz (and I) have been trying to prove all along. On top of those little things that people can see as meaningful, life itself should be viewed the same way. It is easy for that to happen so long as we allow ourselves to find meaning in smaller things. “What we can do, though, is wake up each morning and see the day ahead as our day. The real point is to live each day as if it were precious — as if it matters how we live it (Schmidtz, 107).” Schmidtz does not necessarily mean that we have to wake up every morning and shout our gratitude — but instead, to just be aware that we are living, and to remember that every day, every experience is another patch in the quilt. If we want to leave behind a beautiful and grand quilt, we must allow ourselves to find meaning in the different patches that make it up, and to find meaning in the quilt itself. The fact that humans have the power to give things meaning is what makes life — and the quilt — so amazing.
