It's about damn time: In a landmark for gay rights, the Senate on Saturday voted to let gays serve openly in the military, giving President Barack Obama the chance to fulfill a campaign promise and repeal the 17-year policy known as "don't ask, don't tell."

July, 1963: The Essex - Easier Said Than Done

The Essex was an R&B vocal group. Formed in 1961, The Essex eventually included Anita Humes, Walter Vickers (guitar), Rodney Taylor (drums), Billie Hill and Rudolph Johnson. Vickers and Taylor started the group while they were with the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Japan.

Easier Said Than Done, which climbed to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, was performed by four Marines, not including co-writer William Linton, stationed at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. Linton said that the beat was inspired by the sound of multiple teletype machines, noisy mechanical beasts pounding out copy in the bases communications room. In 1962, a demo scored them a recording contract with Roulette Records. Recruiting lead singer Anita Humes, they recorded the song (Roulette 4494) in less than five minutes.

Three months after Easier Said Than Done charted in June, The Essex had another top 20 hit with the follow-up song, A Walkin Miracle (Roulette 4515) in September 1963. Shes Got Everything was another charting song. Their Marine duties made it hard for the group to take advantage of their hits; for example, before long, Johnson was shipped to Okinawa.

What about developing your OWN OPINIONS BASED UPON FACTS?

Are you too lazy/stupid/some other excuse to get off your ass, go see the film/read the book, EXPERIENCE IT FIRST-HAND?

You know what? I'd be completely respectful of whatever your opinions were after you did that, but until then, NO, sorry.

And let me be clear that I'm not saying it's inappropriate to discuss ISSUES or CONCEPTS that stem from a book/movie someone has not yet read/seen.

All the stuffing is made (2 lbs. of good herb stuffing, with sauteed onions and celery, craisins, and pecans grown on a friend's farm in New Mexico). The two turkeys will go into oven at 9:00 am (11 lbs. each, because they cook faster and are easier to maneuver).

We'll be 11 for dinner, not counting the small furry creatures who will be cavorting below around everyone's feet, praying to the twin gods of Gravity and Children Who Frequently Drop Food at the Table.

Just wanting you all to know that I'm thankful for friends near and far, for the kindness, laughter, tears, and sharing you bring to me each day.
