My creative life
in a new home
I’ve moved to Substack.
If you are receiving this note, it is because you:
are a personal friend or,
have had direct participation in my musical work or,
encountered my work through an organization I led
and did not previously unsubscribe from my highly sporadic email updates in the past. I apologize in advance if this email is an unwelcome intrusion into your inbox. Please unsubscribe with my blessings if you no longer wish to receive periodic updates from me. That helps me make sure I am only sending these missives to those who genuinely want to receive them.
Why this, why now?
I am moving to Substack in an effort to get a better handle on the various websites, platforms, technologies I’ve used in the more than 20 years since my first website and I have determined that Substack offers me the best place to consolidate my intermittent updates and my podcast work. I have taken down my prior Anachronism podcast host and will migrate selected episodes to Substack. If there are any that you are particularly missing, you can send me a note and I can get it re-posted here.
News
Grammy consideration for Rime of the Ancient Mariner - This released last February. It is a work for orchestra and narrator. If you’ve been along with me from the times of Orchestra Unleashed in Los Angeles, then you might have heard this work premiered live in 2010. I got around to getting a nice studio recording and released it in partnership with Navona Records. It was conducted by Peter Pejtsik with the Budapest Film Orchestra and joined by the narrative talents of Kent Stephens. Navona submitted it to the first round of consideration in two Grammy award categories. I am honored to be included in their submissions to the Recording Academy. If you happen to be a member, I would be very grateful for your support!
Symphony no. 1 - I had the privilege of having this COVID-era work work recorded by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Miran Vaupotic. It is a huge creative milestone for me and I am proud of the music and the performance. I hope to have the opportunity to share the work in live performance in the future. I will share details should that arise. You can pre-save this recording on your favorite streaming service. When you do, this helps my release generate more interest in these platforms and expands the possibility of it being picked up for editorial playlist inclusion which in turn helps this music find more people who might enjoy it.
New Choral Works - I crafted two paired works (Hymphony and The Bells) for a cappella mixed choir that I shared with friends in two house concerts here in Northern Colorado in August. As usual, these events were warm and intimate. I was joined by some wonderfully talented vocalist friends from Loveland Opera Theatre and Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers. I love creating Salon experiences that brings listeners and performers together for a musically rich interaction. We had a lovely repast of refreshment, conversation and sound. My wife and I will be hosting another in November when we will be joined by pianist Benjamin Harding. If you are in the area and would like to join us, you can connect for updates on my social media channels.
Kalos Arts - Those of you who know me personally will know that I have a lifelong commitment to the Christian faith that I received in my early adult life. Over the last few years, I have been working with a few friends to create a non-profit organization dedicated to promoted the creation of new artworks from Christian artists. I recognize that for some of you, this is not going to be something you value but my faith informs my work so I will be writing content at the intersection between my artistic pursuits and my faith on the new Substack site for Kalos. Please check it out if you are interested in more in that vein.
Thank you!
Please feel free to reach out to me if you want to connect on topics artistic or otherwise. I appreciate your time with this email and wish you the very best!

Thank you for sharing your passionate work with us!
This is such a welcome update, Gustav! I remember the days of orchestra unleashed very fondly and so happy that you’re getting the recognition you deserve. Fingers crossed for a win.
