Charles has come to Superhero High because he ~sensed~ trouble. He had sent Logan to keep an eye on things, but it seems that the situation has become more serious, so he felt the need to come himself under the guise of a biology teacher. He's not yet in a wheelchair, and he's First Class-style with his powers (that is, quite a bit more frivolous with them than he would be if he was, say, a Stewart~) so he doesn't really have a huge problem with reading everyone's mind. HIDE YO THOUGHTS, HIDE YO DREAMS.
