I HAVE MANY DICK FRANCIS THOUGHTS, LET ME TELL YOU THEM!

1. The Men. The stoic, frequently beaten up, stubborn men. *happy sigh* BUT! They aren't all the same either! Like, some of them are rolling stones, some of them have a pile of kids, some of them cheat on their wives and best friends, some of them manipulative bastards and some are too honest for their own good.

2. The Women. Like, on occasion I STRONGLY sideeye some of them and some of the narrative choices, but it's a rare Dick Francis that doesn't have at least three prominent female characters who are all different from one another. They're not all good, they're not all bad, they're not all super interested in the main character, they're not all young, they're not all old.

3. The Horses. Okay, sometimes the horses are only VAGUELY related to anything else going on in the book, but you can bet there will be a horse somewhere in the narrative. I find it kind of impressive.

4. Kinkshaming. This might be because I ended up reading a three-four books in a row where the antagonists were into BDSM, but, uh. It was very noticable.

5. Slashiness. SO MANY main characters get hit on by dudes and/or asked if they're gay. None of them are, but reading some of them as bi takes absolutely no effort. I mean, if characters in the actual book does it, I cannot be blamed for doing the same.

6. Professions. Or very skillful infodumping. I enjoy it.

7. Not Favorites.
The Sid Halley books. Never been able to get into them.
10 lb penalty. I find it skeevy and unsatisfying.
Smokescreen. Possibly somebody not me will like it, because it's not actively offensive or anything, I just found it a bit. Eh.

Field of 13 (1998). A short story collection.

Daniel Roke is a joy and a wonder forever. Probably has the weakest female characters on this list, but I like them fine. Daniel has to go undercover as a Terrible Person and he's so bad at it! He's just so pretty and naturally good at horses and virtuous that being a terrible person is really difficult for him! He's also Australian, so in retrospect I totally blame him for my fondness for Australia. *nod* Great potential for a future series, but instead Sid fricking Halley gets four books. I remain bitter.

Neil and Jonah actually have a lot in common, except Neil is a manipulative bastard, and Jonah is a Good Person tm. Knockdown has a super abrupt ending that I'm not entirely on board with, but the rest of the book is v. good. Jonah is one of those "I will let you push me this far, but any farther and I'll ruin your life" while Neil thinks it through and then goes straight for the jugular. Also both of them get rich brats who are talented jockeys to deal with.

Twice Shy I like because of the brothers Derry and the ways in which they are definitely related, but deal with things their own way. Also the hint of threesomes through the ages, and the Old School computers, and lady computer genius, and the ways, as littlerhymes pointed out, families are imperfect copies of each other. I think I'd classify Jonathan as a "ruin your life" character and William as a "jugular" character.

Proof is about booze and grief. I mean, there are other things as well! Like one of the most brutal openings of any Dick Francis books I've ever read. How family will let you down, how sometimes being a friend just means being there, and how to keep going when you really don't want to. It's not a book about depression (unlike Blood Sport, which is) but it's definitely there.

I find Thomas Lyon's view on women somewhat frustrating -- "feminism? what feminism? What do you mean you want to be complimented on your skills, not your looks?" "18 year old? Perfect future wife material!" -- but the women themselves are quite diverse and interesting, and the very meta view on RPF is fascinating. Lyon is the young director of a Hollywood movie based on a book based on a real event (in this fictional world), and he's very firm on the fact that this is only vaguely related to real life. I'd actually really like to see the movie we get described.

Al and Chris are my daaaaarlings! They just find each other so delighfully amusing. Al, weirdly, is neither "ruin your life" nor "jugular" but somewhere inbetween that leans very heavily on stubbornness and honour. Al's relationship with his wife is interesting, as is the way he has so much loyalty and love for his entire family, but he's also a weirdo loner who spends 90% of his time in a cabin in the Scottish highlands. Painting golf scenes. Because of course he does. Al probably would stay for his wife or his mother and he'd probably be good at running the brewery, but he'd also be very, very miserable. I mean, that's pretty much what his wife says as well.

So apparently there is going to be a Shadowhunters tv show. I know this because of tumblr. And judging by the website it is aimed straight at 14 year olds. Which is fine! 14 year olds should definitely have crappy supernatural tv shows to watch and swoon over the main characters!

(Actually upon second glance, it's like a website created about 15 years ago, which is slightly weird, but ok.)

The problem however is that constant exposure to the actors being cute eroded my resistance to Cassie Clare. (also if they are aged 16-19 I'm going to be very surprised)

And then it turned out that the library has the first 4 books in Mortal Instruments + the Bane Chronicles in ebook rental. To sum up: I have read half of the Bane Chronicles, read/skimmed book 1, skimmed most of book 2, read most of book 3 and currently stalled half way through book 4.

Things I like
Maia. I ship Maia/Isabelle at the moment. Doesn't look like she's in the tv show though which is disappointing.
Jace's flunctuating identity, which cracks me up. I'm fully expecting new reveals about his heritage in the other 2 anna half books. I can't begin to think HOW it can get more complicated, but I have faith!
Luke. Best of all step-fathers, my god.
Tattoos. Though honestly that's probably partly because of a Swedish-Norwegian book series that uses runes in much the same way. I don't think it's ever been translated -- if it had I would be pushing it on people, going "here! here! get disturbing insights into the shaping of my id! --why are you running away? Come back! THERE ARE WILFUL LADIES AND STOIC LOYAL DUDES! WITH MAGIC!"
Alec and Isabelle's relationship. Best of siblings.
Magnus Bane. He's great. As far as Deus ex Machinas in sparkles go, he's top shelf.
Book 3. Stuff happens all over the place! Fantasyland in not!Switzerland seems more real to me as a setting than New York does. Which. Uh. Is possibly unfortunate...
Desperately cool. I don't know how much of that is deliberate -- I'm assuming it is because if not it's one hell of a coincidence -- but every single character in these books basically embody some characteristic of stereotypical fandom favorite. And that's ignoring the entire hipster cool of Fandemonium, Simon's garageband, Luke's bookshop and the demoncycles. (Demoncycles = Anne Bishop OR Hawkeye? Who published first? Or just a frankly bizarre form of zeitgeist?) They are all children of EVIL PEOPLES OMG. (Runaways did it better) They have tattoos! and fancy weaponry! All super attractive! (Clary is obvs. unaware of this fact) Angels! Demons! More supernaturals than you've ever seen before in one place!
Sebastian. Way better villain than Valentine.

Things I don't like
Magnus/Alec. I think she's aiming for a relationship that takes place in the margins, but I'm left mostly bewildered as to wtf they're doing even after having read the Bane Chronicles -- no, actually, that confused me even more. I have no idea if I've caught up to the events in that book yet. I think I need a timeline to work this out, but I'm not sure I care enough to go looking. I totally ship them though because I am absolutely that easy.
Alec is gay? Most abrupt revelation this side of Jean Gray outing tiny!Bobby Drake. Was amused by his exasperated "why the fuck does everybody know my business? Why do you even care? Fuck off" later on though. I paraphrase. Alec would never curse that much.
Max's death. Which seemed very "well, somebody these people care about have to die -- oh I know! Little brother! Awesome! High five to me!"
One girl. Do none of these girls have friends? Do they all consider other girls deeply uninteresting? Like, why does THAT have to be the starting point for all of them?
Clary and Jace. After three and a half books I STILL have zero interest in their relationship drama, which is an actual problem considering they have at least 85% of the narrative time. Also while Jace's flunctuating identity does amuse me, I do feel that's a bit of a incest cop-out. Like, commit to your incest storyline, Clare! I'm currently stalled in book 4 because Jace is all "I love you! but I can't be with you! because I have nightmares! which I won't tell you about! Instead I shall skulk around in the shadows! and make out with you madly! because sexual tension! and then run away again! because nightmares! but I won't officially break up with you because love! and stuff!" It is SO ANNOYING! It's not exciting misunderstandings and pinings, it's just idiotic.
I do like Clary's powers but I find her amazingly dull aside from that (possibly why I liked Book 3 which gave her the opportunity to mess around with that aspect more).
(btw I expect the tv show to have more psuedo-incest Alec/Jace moments as Alec has book canon crush on him and I will be v. disappointed if that's not played up more in the tv show.)
Simon. Simon has at least 10% of the remaining narrative, and I don't give a fuck about him either. So far I've mostly liked him when he's been stuck in a jail cell, which isn't that promising. He is, admittedly, more interesting in Book 4 than ever before, but that doesn't say much.
Revelations. There are frequent revelations that are set up like "tiny factoid that make the rest make perfect sense! see what I did there?" but in fact come out of left field and reveal nothing in regards to past interactions. Cassie Clare is not Diane Wynne Jones, let me tell you. Even Rees Brennan is better at this.
Book 1. Iiit is not good. Getting past the first couple of chapters took some genuine effort.

Honestly, my main problem with this series is that I don't care about Clary and Jace. I don't usually have a main character problem -- Katniss is my fave, Percy Jackson is a delight, Alex Rider is lovely, Sabriel is a wonder, and Blue is awesome -- but I really, really do in this case. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll break up and/or fade into the background. *hopeful*

I sort of fear that I'm going to end up writing 100k fics for this particular fandom and everyone I know will laugh in my face. Forever. AND THEY WILL BE RIGHT TO.

(It'll probably be Sebastian/Isabelle or something for maximum irony.)

Fantastic Four (2015) - Victor, Susan, Johnny, Ben.
Use the characters that work for the story. I admit I’m not Reed Richards biggest fan, but if you want to write about Reed and Ben’s friendship or Victor and Reed’s rivalry or Reed being a stretchy runaway asshole, I will read it and love it.

Susan, Johnny and Ben bonding while they’re learning to deal with their powers?

Susan and Johnny being siblings?

Victor being his weird techno-mage self pre-Reed Richards? I kind of walked out of them movie being absolutely on Victor’s side of everything, so obviously I’d be down with that.

All of them being very good at what they do in various ways?

I would also be delighted by crossovers like Johnny/Spider-Gwen or Susan/Spider-Gwen, or Johnny/Matt Murdock, Victor/Peter Parker, Susan/Cindy Moon, Ben/Foggy, Susan/Hope van Dyne or, like, Johnny/Gamora! Or mix and match as wanted!

Talk to me of Gwen’s universe! Everything is still pretty open when it comes to the roles other heroes and villains and whatnot have in her world, so I’d love something that plays with that. Is there a Cindy Moon in Gwen’s world as well? Is there a Kamala Khan? What’s Johnny Storm up to? Luke Cage? So, you know, world building. I’d be into that.

Or, A-Force #5 had a fun panel where Gwen swoops in to save MJ, so if you want to do Gwen/MJ, that’s also fine. Or something with all The Mary Janes. Bandfic!

Okay, you know Sir Willoughby didn't reveal everything in his memoirs. There's a lot of random references throughout the book to things he never elaborates on, so if you'd want to think up scenarios for those, that'd be awesome. The jam jar, the duck and the gloves, anybody?

Maybe something from the point of view of the door? If not, I'm also a huge fan of Iodine so anything with her would be great! If you want to make it something about gender exploration (it IS an opera after all), that's be excellent. But if you want to write a coffee shop AU or a high school AU or a werewolf au, that would also be excellent!

General preferences: I like racebending, and genderbending, and explorations (deep or lightly handled) into sexual- and gender identity. Slash, het, femslash, gen - it's all good. Happy endings, but can be angsty until that point. Silly fics, serious fics, action, pwps, AUs...

Huge competency kink, and opposites attract (as you can see from my Pinboard bookmarks). I like characters who are really, really good at something, but kind of fail at social interaction or being a proper grown up. And also characters who are secretly good at things/a good person, but refuse to acknowledge this.

Ladies being awesome! Coffeeshop AUs! Mutant/Powers AUs! Kidfic! Fake dating! Ridiculous misunderstandings! Hijinks!

I'm really enjoying the X-23 ongoing, so of course it's been cancelled.

I would like something in the line of the comic with it search for identity and redemption and found families and suchlike. I'd prefer gen (on a level of canon couples) but if you get a great femslash or het idea, or, hey, you know who Jake Gavin jr is and can slash him with Remy, feel free!

Just, I like the Laura we meet in X-23 and I'd like to see more of her. If you cannot fit my other character choices in, I am fine with that.

Our Teen Wolf himself! He lives with his hot single mom, and is kind of a loser, but has hopes to get on the lacrosse team when we first meet him.

He really, really doesn't want to be a werewolf.

The best character on this show, and also, Scott's BFF. He's had a crush on Lydia for ages, but she's pretty much unaware that he's alive. His dad is the sherif, and Stiles tends to listen in on secret cop stuff a lot. They also have an awesome parent-child relationship.

Sheriff: So, you lied to me.

Stiles: That depends on how you define lying.

Sheriff: Well, I define it as not telling the truth. How do you define it?

Stiles: Reclining your body in a… horizontal position?

Allison Argent

New Girl. The Argent family are werewolf hunters. Allison is not aware of this, but she knows something is off about her family.

That's Kate, Allison's crazy and hot aunt. I think she's awesome, but the crazy cannot be denied.

He's an asshole, Lydia's boyfriend and also captain of the lacrosse team. He's also adopted and very driven. He's sort of the junior bad guy on the show, and I'm torn between smacking him and patting him on the top of the head a lot.

Werewolf! The least alpha werewolf in the world, in my opinion, which means that I can't even read badfic, because sooner or later the author describes Derek as alpha and dominant and then I start laughing.

EPISODES

1: Wolf Moon
Everything in Scott McCall's life is starting to fall into place. He gets a spot on the First Line of his Lacrosse team and a date with the woman of his dreams. But when he gets bitten by a wolf, the people around him could be in danger.

First of all, the characters on this show are inexplicably convinced that lacrosse is the Manliest Game of Manly Hardcore Dangerous Games. Just, just go with it. Feel free to mock them. I do.

The mystery of who bit Scott is a season long arc.

2: Second Chance at First Line
Scott and Stiles discover that the werewolf curse can also be triggered by anger, besides the full moon. With the lacrosse game coming up, Tyhurst and his girlfriend, Lydia, hope to humiliate Scott. Will Scott be able to control his rage?

Episodes one and two are kinda boring, so I don't really recommend starting with them. Unless you really like lacrosse, I guess.

3: Pack Mentality
Scott is shaken when his vivid dream of a mauling aboard a school-bus turns out to have actually happened. Scott turns to Derek for help, but Derek warns him that his help will not be free. Meanwhile Scott's long awaited date with Allison turns into a group date and Scott gets bowling help from Allison.

4: Magic Bullett
Allison's aunt comes to town and shoots a shadowy werewolf figure with a special bullet that she estimates will kill it within 48 hours. Derek is the one hit and insists that Scott and Stiles help him.

HERE! START HERE! This is the arrival of Crazy, Hot Aunt Kate, and also the start of the Derek/Stiles odd couple-dom. It also has a hilariously awkward boyfriend at family dinner scene.

5: The Tell
Lydia and Jackson witness a werewolf attack at the video store. Stiles is worried for his father, the sheriff. Allison's aunt gives her a family heirloom and encourages her to use it to learn more about the family history. Scott and Allison play hooky on her birthday. Derek confronts Jackson about what he saw the night before. Derek gets a surprise visit. At the parent teacher conferences Scott's mom and Allison's father find out they both skipped school that day... After the conference someone pulls a gun...and uses it.

Pretty hilarious episode. Features Aunt Bad Touch who's hot. And crazy. The episode is worth it just for the parent/teacher conferance scenes, really.

6: Heart Monitor
Scott and Stiles are on the outs after Stiles dad gets hurt, but when Derek insists that Scott avoid Allison, Scott turns to Stiles to help him master his anger with the help of a heart monitor. Meanwhile Jackson is feeling the effects of having been scratched and approaches Allison claiming to want to get to know her and Scott better.

7: Night School
Responding to Scott's howl, the alpha savages Derek and traps Scott and Stiles in their high school. Events escalate even further when Allison, Jackson, and Lydia are lured to the school as well with a phony text message.

I refer to this episode as "wow, this show hasn't got a budget at all, does it?" but a lot of people like it, and it does have some great moments of horror (and also Stiles dialogue).

8: Lunatic
As Scott's second full moon approaches, he gives in to his animal urges and hurts Stiles but Stiles gets a measure of revenge in locking him up. Meanwhile Jackson continues to try and get closer to Allison. The Argents learn that Scott somehow knew Derek.

Where we discover that Scott's Wolf-side is an asshole.

9: Wolf's Bane

Arthur frowned. "If he didn't want to get shot, he should've made more noise."

Lucy McClane looked around for someone to share a commiserating look with. The closest she got was Olivia Dunham, who shrugged before going back to checking their newest cache of weaponry.

"Next time we meet that little vampire chick, I'm joining her," Damon Salvatore said. He was sitting on the ground, mopping blood off his chest and glaring at everyone. "She doesn't shoot her team mates."

"That's because she eats them," Nikola Tesla pointed out. He sounded a little dreamy. "If I were still a vampire--"

Damon pointed at him with his bloody shirt. "I still don't believe that, by the way."

"Do I care? No, no, I do not."

Lucy rolled her eyes. "The next time we find some normal people, I'm joining them."

They all stared at her.

"...Good luck with that," Olivia said finally.

They didn't find any normal people, but a terminator found them, and Damon got more beat up. And then Olivia found an enormous ant creature, and Damon probably would've got more beat up, except he tripped on a root and fell on Lucy, who got knocked unconscious, and Olivia and Nikola took down the ant, while Arthur pinched the bridge of his nose and wondered if, in retrospect, working with Eames hadn't been so bad after all.

"There's ant all over my pants," Nikola complained. They were making their way further into the woods, hoping that the landscape would eventually change for something better, like California, or at least somewhere with less creatures hellbent on killing them.

"At least you still have pants," Damon said bitterly. His shirt had turned out to be a lost cause, and he was currently carrying Lucy around. He was not appreciating his unlife.

"Not for long, I won't. If you'd be a less useless vampire--"

"Both of you, shut up," Arthur told them, after repeatedly glaring at them failed to work.

They walked on in silence, Olivia way ahead of them, probably to avoid listening to the bickering. Then she stopped dead and slowly raised her arms into the air.

Lucy woke up in paradise.

"Hell, actually," a stranger said drily. She was sitting crosslegged on a floor made of crates, judging by the brandnames Lucy glimpsed. "Good morning. I'm Ellie, Ellie Linton."

"She's the boss," an equally strange boy with curly hair and an English accent added. He was stirring a pot with a expression of fascinated disgust.

"And you're what? The chef?" Lucy said weakly.

Ellie snorted. "No, Nathan is the canonfodder."

"Oh, thanks a lot!" Nathan scowled. "My contribution to this... this thing is essential, I'll have you know! Without me, this whole place would fall apart, admit it." He paused, poking at something in the pot. "Also, you love me, you know it. You want to have hot, steamy, sticky, disgusting sex with me in your tent."

Ellie looked revolted. "Ugh."

A smaller girl with curls that rivaled Nathan's entered, carrying fish dangling from a stick. She frowned. "Stop sexually harrassing Ellie."

"Stop being so creepy," Nathan retorted. "No ten year old speaks like that."

The girl ignored him and began slicing up the fish.

"So," Damon said. "You think they kill everyone over the age of twenty, and if so, will I make it on a technicality, or is it just a coincidence?"

"Really, your complete narcissism is your most compelling feature," Nikola said. He sounded like he meant it, too.

Damon looked flattered by the unexpected compliment. "Thank you. I try."

"Lucy can stay, but what do we think about the others?" Ellie looked around. "Emily?"

"I'm not a walking lie detector," Emily Lightman protested. "I okayed Nathan."

Nathan pouted. Motorbaby rolled her eyes, then patted him on the knee. She was fond of him, but tended to blame it on a serious case of getting Stockholm'd into it.

"I like Olivia," Alexis Castle said. "She reminds me of Detective Beckett."

Ellie nodded.

"The guys are kind of... Weird. I mean, Nathan is weird--"

"Hey!"

"--but these guys are seriously weird," Alexis said, ignoring the interruption.

"Maybe they're sort of like draculoids," Motorbaby suggested. "Except prettier." Granted, being prettier than most draculoids didn't take much.

Parker dropped down from the tree she'd been perched in, landing lightly on her feet. "Enemy in sight," she informed them. She thought for a moment. "The new guys could fight."

"You are not a teenager," was the first thing Arthur said upon seeing Parker.

Parker blinked. "No," she agreed. She threw a rifle at him, he caught it automatically. "Enemy in sight. Metal and dead people."

"Dead people?" Arthur repeated. He checked the rifle. It was an old weapon that seemed like new. Sometimes he still wasn't sure if this wasn't just a very fucked up dream of some kind. He wasn't convinced enough to try dying however. Not yet. Sadly he remembered very well how he'd ended up here.

"Zombies," Parker added. "Probably. They move slowly, but they're hard to stop."

Olivia came up behind her, holding what looked like some kind of energy weapon. "Smash their heads in, that usually works. If not, fire is a good backup."

"We're... in a forest," Arthur said, looking around pointedly at all the leafy things. Nature wasn't his thing, but he could recognize tree and grass when he saw it. Flammable things.

Olivia shrugged. "That's why it's the backup plan."

Nathan was in the front lines. As usual. "One day I'm not going to wake up again, and then you'll all be sorry," he yelled. They all ignored him. Not that he'd expected anything else. He muttered to himself, until a rock hit him on the shoulder. "Ow! Fuck! What?"

"Shut up!" One of the new guys yelled. "I can't hear them coming with you bitching all the time!"

Nathan officially didn't like the new guys.

This is Tamara Adama. She dies in the first episode, but is resurrected in VR because her father is a dumbass. She starts out very lost and confused, but then realizes that she's fucking awesome and behaves accordingly.

This is Lacy. She should've been on the train that blew up, but changed her mind last minute and so ends up the only one who knows VR!Zoe exists.

Her life is pretty damn hard.

These three women plus Tamara are the ones you need to pay attention to. They're the ones with plans who do stuff, even if it may not seem like it at first.

Gamma Ray by Beck

Sister Clarice is a teacher, creepy, and believes in the one god.

She makes herself BFF with Zoe's mom, something that ends badly for Zoe's mom. Probably.

There's, you know, plots and stuff too!

Graystone needs to figure out how to make cylons that work, which leads to him trapping Zoe's avatar inside a cylon, and then torturing it to find out if she's still there. That's actually a really good episode. He's also got PR problems because his daughter was a terrorist who blew herself and bunch of people up, and his wife has apparently never heard of keeping her mouth shut. He's got a business rival, who's chip he stole, who's now blackmailing him... Really, what Graystone needs is a head!Six to arrange his life for him.

The most interesting thing about Dr. Graystone is that she's got a dead brother. For real. She gets, like, one moment of awesome, and that's rescuing Graystone from a PR mess she made in the first place.

Sister Clarice is head of a terrorist cell which is competing against another cell headed by Spike. Spike wants to blow shit up, Sister Clarice wants to think about things first. They don't get along.

Joseph Adama is a dumbass. He gets himself into debt with the tauron mafia in order to resurrect Tamara, doesn't like what he gets, runs away, and then runs back to try to hunt her down in VR. He's an entertaining dumbass though!

Zoe had a plan. As neither VR!Zoe nor Lacy knows exactly what it was, they're now doing the best they can. VR!Zoe wants to escape and manipulates Lacy into helping her. As a result, Lacy becomes a terrorist.

It... makes more sense in the show?

To be honest, I watch it mainly for the pretty. I may have missed nuances.

Also? The first 2-3 episodes are boring. Put them on, and do something else as well. Picspam! Arrange your playlists! Make lists of people you'd want on a world saving team! that kind of thing.

There's this idea that if a woman is underweight then it must be because she's slavishly buying into the media-promoted idea that slim is beautiful. As such, all skinny women must be airheads whose only concern is looking pretty for their men. This is, not to put too fine a point on it, a giant crock of steaming bullshit.

Thank you for writing a story in one of my fandoms! This automatically makes you one of my most favorite people! :)

Generally speaking, I like stories that end happily, and, well, none of my fandom choices are depressing to start with, so, can I ask for happy rather than sad? Bittersweet or wistful is fine, however, just not a very depressing ending.

I am generally a fan of AUs, crossovers and crack, if that's your thing. If something more in the tone of canon is more according to your idea, then that's fine too!

I'm happy with gen, het, slash and femslash, as well as all ratings.

This is my delicious if you want an idea of what kind of stories I like.

Disney Princesses Belle/Jasmine/Mulan/Pocahontas
I'd also love to see Esmerelda and Tiana featured! Perhaps in a heart-warming Disney-type fairy tale? I'm absolutely fine with femslash, gen, AUs and crossovers, but I prefer happy endings, and more glossy than gritty.

Usually I ask for Christmas stories, but considering the characters I've requested, that would be... a little odd. I'm definitely down with winter holiday stories though! And I forgot to mention that I also love Lilo, Nani and Boo, if, you know, you really want to include a manymany characters. I would like the story to focus on the girls, but if you want to include their boys in the story, that's fine!

Geeky fun times, please! Slash is awesome, but I'm also fond of Kara and Brenna, so gen or het is also fine. And I love my MacBook, so Charles is, of course, a favorite.

So I had actually intended to do more for 14valentines this year, but it turns out that moving while attending uni is fairly stressful. Who knew, right?

Today is Arts and Entertainment Day. I think in stories, I remember stories, so this is an issue that's important to me.

Women working in movies

Agatha Christie wrote very awesome British crime stories (and some other things, but it's the crime that's awesome) featuring among others the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and the old maid, Miss Marple. I adore pretty much every single one of her stories, but some of my favorites are Death on the Nile (Poirot), A Murder is Announced (Miss Marple), plus the short story collections Poirot's Early Cases and The Tuesday Night Club (Miss Marple).

Diana Wynne Jones writes fantasy with plots like those puzzle games which look really complicated, but once you find the right thing to pull it unfolds beautifully and you go "oh duh". Some favorite books of mine are Howl's Moving Castle (I love the movie too, but it's not entirely faithful to the book), The Lives of Christopher Chant, Dark Lord of Derkholm & Year of the Griffin, and Hexwood

Patricia Briggs, I haven't read a lot of, but I love the Mercy Thompson series and the first book of Alpha & Omega set in the same world. Werewolves! Yay! The plot of the first Mercy book is kinda lame, to tell the truth, but the next books get much better, and I like all the characters I'm supposed to like. On occasion it slips into emo-porn, but in a way that hits my personal emo-porn kinks, so I like it.

You're probably already reading Naomi Novik's Temeraire, but if not - dragons! Lovely dragons in Napoleonic times! An easy, action-filled fast-paced read. And did I mention the dragons?

Cora Sandel is one of my favorite Norwegian authors. Two of my favorite stories are Alberta and the Freedom is part two of a trilogy. Alberte is living the Bohemian life in Paris. And Krane's Cafe which is gossip and small town scandals and a fascinating read.

For Day 7: Domestic Violence what I have is two links, and a picture.

The link is to the International Museum of Women website and the story called Confronting Ugly with Ugly.

I'm not wildly fond of Amnesty as a rule, but that's not the point. The point is that I remember this campaign. It was several years ago, and I still remember the image after the cut as an "Oh!" moment.

Part of the reason is that the slogan "Et lite stykke Norge" (a small piece of Norway) is the slogan Freia Melkesjokolade (milk chocolate) uses. So I was already used to seeing it, and even a similar photo. Just. Not with the bruises.

My second link is to JURK (Legal advice for women) which is run by female law students at the University of Oslo. All their work is pro bono. They don't take criminal cases, but they do take everything else. (English version of the site)
