The vessel was carrying about a thousand tons of diesel fuel. The owner of the ship decided to transfer diesel fuel from an emergency board to a tanker ship "Marat", belonging to the same shipowner. With the support of the Sakhalin region and the Far East Air-Rescue Emergency Center Russia addressed the issue to recover the disaster.

Two months ago, almost at the same time near the coast of Chukotka 16/11/2011 in the Gulf of Anadyr Big freezer trawler (BMRT) "Oriental Angel", owned by Korean company Keuk Dong Fisheries Co., Ltd. was ignition. Later the ship was found stranded or grounded near Cape Military topographers (Anadyr Chukotka Autonomous District). On board «ORIENTAL ANGEL» 1110 tons of various types of marine fuels - oil, gas oil and diesel fuel was founded. This situation portends ecological disaster!! If somebody don’t start rescue operations immediately, weather conditions will not allow to take sufficient measures to eliminate accidents. The operation should start immediately! Since the melting of ice approach to the ship will be difficult and impossible. It is also necessary to consider the most favorable ways to eliminate the consequences of failure to prevent the ingress of fuel into the sea. If this happens, consequences would threaten the flora and fauna of the area and the entire planet!

In connection with the accident trawler owner, the South Korean company Keuk Dong Fisheries wrote a letter to the Government of Chukotka asking for assistance in rescuing the distressed vessel. However, until now there has been no action!!!!!

Please take all necessary measures to prevent an impending ecological disaster! Why does the company owner Keuk Dong Fisheries Co., Ltd take no action! Do not they understand what can happen? Let's work on the Ministry of Environment of South Korea. Maybe they will push the company Keuk Dong Fisheries Co., Ltd. to do the elimination as soon as possible!!

Solar energy leasing companies - plusses and minuses

You've likely heard an advertisement from a solar roofing rental or leasing company on the radio who promises a free installation of a solar array on your roof that will dramatically reduce your electric bill. You won't have to maintain the system because they will, and after a certain number of years you can either keep they system or they will remove it. And best of all, you get to keep the electricity that the system generates, both reducing (or even eliminating) your electric bill and helping the environment. All of this is completely true, and, in fact, most of the bigger companies doing these installs are reputable, knowlegable, and easy to work with. They are able to offer this service because of an array of tax credits they qualify for as a commercial entity - much more generous credits that what you or I would get as individuals. But they are also able to offer this service because they do charge monthly leasing fees, and that's the part that you have to figure in.

For most people the cost of leasing the panels will be less than their savings on their electric bill, and this will be particularly true if the cost of electricity goes up over the cost of the fixed lease. But if you don't tend to use a lot of electricity in the first place, or you live in an area where electricity is relatively cheap, you might not benefit as much. In addition, you have to assess how well your solar array is going to work - how much energy will it produce where they will put it. This basically boils down to how big the solar array will be and how much direct sunlight it will get where they will put it. The company may be able to help you estimate this, though you might want to get an outside opinion.

For most these leased solar panels are a great solution, and will likely pay off. But that does not mean that they are the right solution for everyone, so it's important to do a little homework.

More info about solar and other home alternative energies at: Green Home Energy Today

Renewable Energy Innovations for 2012: PPAs and Co-ops

It's hard to decide what might be "the big thing" in the home alternative energy market in 2012. In 2011 it was not easy to predict that people would suddenly see the unltra high efficiency of condensing boilers and make them so popular. The other major advance last year was a little more predictable mbecause ithad it's roots in 2010 - the idea of a company paying for instalation of your solar roof and then keeping some of the power generated to pay for their costs. So what about 2012? I think that what we will begin to see in 2012 is the phrases "energy co-op" and "PPA" become more widely known.
If you are unfamiliar with these terms now, co-operatives and power purchase agreements are basically ways to allow groups of people who live near each other share some form of alternative energy output. So, for example, a giant wind turbine, micro hydro electricity system (see pic below), or large solar array in a field will likely generate more electricity than one house will need. In a co-op or PPA, neighbors share in the installation and upkeep costs but also the output.

So, while one of the barriers to wide scale alternative enerrgy production and distribution is energy lost while it must be transported over long distances over power lines and such, smaller scale co-ops and ppas could be just the answer!

My site has more about renewable home energies available now: Green Home Energy Today

Earthships!

Here is a link to see what the Earthships have done in Durango Colorado. Originally this had started in Taos New Mexico, the Earthship is a building made from recyclable materials, cans, bottles, glass bottles, tires, and everything is scientifically drawn up to work ecologically. You collect rainwater, grow your own foods, and make a true living with solar power. Your house takes care of you!

http://www.earthships.com/

This is a wonderful way of building, and I look forward to finding more interesting things we can do to create an interest, and eventually small living communities around the world.

I recently started working at a movie theater, and the amount of waste that it produces depresses me. Especially knowing that so much waste comes from theaters all over the world. I try to do little things like reusing my plastic gloves when serving popcorn insteaad of constantly getting new ones. Turning off the lights in the employee lounge when I leave. Pick bottles out of the trash and recycle them. But it doesn't change that we throw out trashbags full of popcorn every single day. And use multiple roles of paper towels to clean things. All the appliances stay on and suck up energy when they aren't even in use. It kills me.

Does anyone else feel powerless? How do you keep from getting depressed while we watch our home get destroyed?

Eco-Containers?

I work at a food store, and I have been placed in charge of dried fruits and nuts, etc. Right now, these things are in little plastic bags, which is of course bad for the environment.

I am looking for clear plastic, or a suggestion that doesn't involve clear plastic.

Even the food from bulk bins ends up getting put in plastic.

What do you guys suggest?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Introduction to Catalysta

Hi Everyone,

For the past several years, I've led an all-volunteer production team that has been hard at work creating Catalysta, a not for profit organization whose goal is to inspire the exploration and development of careers that are socially responsible and sustainable.

Still in pre-production, the Catalysta website will be a collaborative community made up of audio and video programs, a social network, and a career center with job board. Our content will feature a wide range of professions including journalism, law, hospitality/tourism, social work, art, and subjects such as Rachel Carson, Buckminster Fuller, and Joseph Beuys.

We've recently begun outreach efforts to fund our video programming. You can find out more on our Kickstarter page.

It would be great to have your input and participation as we get ready to launch in Spring 2011.

After dump, what happens to electronic waste?

There's a lot more to consider when we get rid of that old electronic gear. Worth thinking about especially this time of year... Listen in or read the short version below:
http://www.npr.org/2010/12/21/132204954/after-dump-what-happens-to-electronic-waste?sc=17&f=1007

Greetings

I would like to tell you about a project I am involved with in Baltimore!

Last January, which I'm surprised to realize is now almost a year ago, I got together with some friends of mine to create an urban farming collective. Our goals at the time were unclear, except that we had found several trashed city-owned lots that we wanted to clean up. Since then, we've turned those lots into a community garden and in the future we plan to help create similar green spaces all over the city. Our mission has evolved to include plans for rainwater collection systems, alternative energy sources, rooftop gardening, bio-remediation projects, container composting, bicycle recycling projects(building working bicycles using parts from non-functional ones), and many other projects. The majority of our materials are reclaimed, donated, or acquired through work-trades with local business.

Please visit baltimorefreefarm.org to learn more, or visit kickstarter.baltimorefreefarm.org to watch a super sweet video that we made about our organization and, if you feel so inclined, perhaps make a pledge to donate to our fundraiser!

Are there similar projects happening where you live? I would like to learn about what is happening in other places as far as urban agriculture/sustainable food systems.
