height: 5'4"
weight: 111 lbs.

previous cr: Nope~

history: The DA wiki has a general breakdown, but since Dragon Age is a game about choices, here are the ones made in Bethany's version of the story so far:

- Bethany's older sister was Marian Hawke, a quick-witted and sarcastic rogue. She and Bethany's twin brother, Carver, fought together at the battle of Ostagar; after that was lost, they returned to Lothering, retrieved Bethany and their mother, and ran for it. The town was destroyed shortly after they left.

- Carver was killed by an ogre. After getting the taint, Aveline kills her husband at his request. Soon after, the survivors flee to Kirkwall with Flemeth's help.

- Marian and Bethany pledge their services to a mercenary group for a year, to pay their way into the city.

- After said year is up, our heroes go on various adventures and other assorted hijinks and quests in the general area of Kirkwall to raise the funds needed to join a Deep Roads expedition. They make some friends along the way, and Hawke begins to make a name for herself in the City of Chains.

- Marian brings Varric, Anders, and Bethany along with her to the Deep Roads. They find a very valuable idol, but Varric's brother shows his true colors (Jerkass Chartreuse) and betrays them, taking the idol for himself and locking the group in an ancient dwarven thaig. They manage to fight their way out, but Bethany becomes infected with the taint along the way.

- With Anders's help, they persuade a group of Grey Wardens to let Bethany participate in the Joining ritual, the only hope she has of survival. Bethany survives the ritual and becomes a Warden herself, a fate she comes to resent.

- and then suddenly Abax

personality:
"It was never anything I had to work for. Other people always took the risks, to keep me free."

Varric's nickname for Bethany is "Sunshine," which is as astute an analysis of her as any. Her life hasn't been an easy one - she's spent a good portion of her life on the run as an apostate, seen her father and twin brother die, and almost died herself. Despite these hardships, though, she is a generally kind and caring person. She genuinely cares for the well-being of others and becomes upset when others don't possess the same sort of common courtesy. She is a person who is full of love for everyone, because she was raised by a family who loved her enough to protect her at all costs.

But even though she is so loving, it's easy to see that she is bitter, too. She is particularly resentful of her magic, as this one simple thing has affected her entire life - as well as the lives of her family. Bethany knows that she is privileged in a lot of ways, having grown up as a free mage, with her father to teacher how to use and control her magic, as well as how to hide it. Like Anders tells her in Act I, "Most mages would kill for that." Despite all that, though, all she's ever wanted was to be a normal person with normal problems. She wants a home, a place she can belong to without having to run and hide from templars and live her life without fear.

"I had a twin brother, Carver. He used to nail my braid to the bed while I was sleeping. I never thought I'd miss him this much."

Bethany is calm, collected, the voice of reason - a stark contrast to her siblings. Marian is a celebrity, the center of attention, the leader, while Carver is resentful because he wants to stand in the spotlight and escape from the shadows. Despite seeming so straight-laced compared to her siblings, however, she is just as capable of snark and sarcasm as the other two - she is a Hawke, after all! And while the two of them frustrate and perplex her at times, they are her family, and she wouldn't trade them for anything. Carver's death in particular had a heavy impact on her; though the two of them weren't very close, he was still her brother, her twin, and it feels like a part of her died along with him.

Although Carver is her twin, she's always been closer to Marian; Bethany looks up to her, admires the way she can always take care of things with a smile and a clever remark. This particular relationship becomes complicated after the end of Act One, however. When Bethany contracted the Blight while exploring the Deep Roads, Marian left her in the care of the Grey Wardens, because it was the only way that she could have survived. This is a decision Bethany comes to resent deeply because, as it turns out, being a Grey Warden kind of sucks!

"Was Carver not enough for the darkspawn? Did they have to steal my life as well?"

She's plagued with nightmares, her lifespan is limited -- such is the fate of the Wardens. It is a fate that Bethany mourns, because while she got screwed over, her sister was rewarded with fame, riches, and the life that Bethany wanted to share with her. She often wonders how things might have turned out, if the expedition had gone differently, but she knows there's no changing anything. This is the lot the Maker has set out for her. She's a Grey Warden for life, like it or not, but she doesn't let that stop her from blaming it on her sister. It will take her a long time to overcome this resentment, but in the meantime, she is very cold toward Marian. She writes frequently, though her letters are rather passive-aggressive...

abilities/powers:
Bethany is a mage! So she can do all kinds of wacky shit, such as using the Force, throwing fireballs at people, and some other cool tricks. She can also heal a little bit.

Additionally, Bethany is a Grey Warden, which doesn't grant her much in the way of sparklypoo magical powers, but it does allow her to kill Archdemons and sense darkspawn and other wardens.
