2021 Launch Projects! Team FireSpace worked with T-Mobile, AI2, and the Department of Natural Resources to enhance the safety of wildland firefighters in the field by continuing the development of tools and applications that provide shared situational awareness, hazard marking, and location tracking. The app and hardware device provide firefighters the ability to mark hazards and gives supervisors real-time location data on their teams. The device leverages T-Mobile’s IoT network and can switch to long-range radio in low-signal areas. Well done to Hernan F. Herrera Polanco, Marcus Choi, and Natalia Stepanova!

2021 Launch Projects! The Equi-Track team worked T-Mobile @techexperience to develop a wearable tracking device on horses to help recreational horse owners monitor their horses’ locations and activities during and after emergency situations. Equi-Track is a piece of leather tack that transfers location and activity data to a correlating mobile app. Equi-Track gives owners peace-of-mind in daily riding and unexpected emergencies. Well done, April Zhao, Haiyang Yu, Hua Lo, and Shixin Frank Qin!

2021 Launch Projects! Weather conditions are one of many inputs used to predict wildfire likelihood. Current remote weather stations are large and expensive, and field observers have to manually retrieve data. Without them, data recording is done by pen-and-paper to record weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind-speed, and wind-direction. The WeatherBox team is working with @allen_ai and the @waDNR to develop a light-weight, low-cost, weather monitoring device, that can transmit weather sensor data in low-cell-signal areas using the LoRa Mesh Network. Congratulations, Germaine Ng, Xuefei Chen, Thomas Shen.

When medical students, and residents are training for orthopedic surgeries, they rely on the use of textbooks and cadavers for practice. However, a key limitation in practicing is that they cannot see the underlying tissue. Leveraging the power of the Microsoft HoloLens, Team AR-Tho developed an augmented reality training platform that overlays virtual anatomy onto physical body molds and allows medical residents and students to practice procedures repeatedly in an immersive and low-risk environment. Congrats to Ross Todrzak, Shannon Truong, Wesley Muthemba, and Yue Wu!

2021 Launch Projects! Team Corgo (Dongbin Bai, Guanting Li, Michael Cross, Yeon Hee Rho) developed a system geared towards providing a data-driven approach to drive greener, more efficient airport and airline operation. One contributor of excess pollution is Auxiliary Power Units, which provide power to parked cargo and passenger planes, are unnecessarily left on after the plan is connected to ground power. The team created an IoT device and data dashboard that can detect, monitor, and quantify APU usage in airport cargo areas using microphones and machine learning. APU use data is a critical input to drive the development of effective interventions and policies to reduce the carbon footprint of airline services.

2021 Launch Projects! In partnership with @fetchrobotics and @kinovarobotics, the team created a robotic retrieval system for stockrooms. This system is a proof-of-concept integrating a mobile robot and manipulator arms to work together on tasks to extend the throughput of equipment or supplies. The system can be extended to additional use cases such as library book stocking, food tray assembly, and delivery in assisted living facilities. Congrats to Annan Li, Daniel Azúa, James Muir, Sulaiman Al Akbari, and Yifei Fang.

👉2021 Launch Projects! The model monitoring team worked with the @microsoft Azure team to develop cloud-based tools that can help machine learning engineers improve both the performance and energy consumption of their ML models. They created a dashboard to detect and visualize when models degrade, and it can alert users to retrain their models, helping to prevent not only unnecessary cost, but other significant implications resulting from incorrect predictions.
