I spent almost four hours waiting in the financial aid office today. Now, usually to pay one's fees at this particular dumpy little community college, one would go to the book store. However, because of my wonky academic / financial aid probation because of my low GPA from like five or six years ago, I'm required to wait until after grades have been posted, go to financial aid so they can verify I met my grade and attendance requirements, then they allot my aid to pay my next terms' fees. Grades were posted yesterday (straight A's for me, baby). So, I went in today and sat there for three and half hours. Not because the computers were down or they were short staffed, simply because (as experience has taught me) the administrative offices of this college are woefully inept.
Yes, that's an annoyance. When I was finally seen a quarter 'til seven, the advisor rushed me through. I asked her what steps I had to take to pay for my courses with my grants. She pushed and few buttons and informed me it was paid. Then she noticed something amiss. One of the elective I'd chosen to round out my schedule to full-time (a condition of receiving my grants) doesn't qualify to be paid for by my grant so it's marked as being 'temporarily' paid. As it turns out, because I was in and out of school and acquired many credits from several places which didn't transfer between one and other, I'm technically also a student who is considered to be at 150% credit. Ergo, because of that, the federal grants I receive can only be used for courses the
directly apply to my major. Not my really real major like what I'm going to be studying at university, but rather the remainder of my requirements for my AA-transfer degree.
Okay, sure, not so bad. Here's the problem: I only have eight courses left to take. However, four of them are math courses that I can't together. Two of those are remedial courses I have to take before I can even dream of registering for a college-level math course. So I'm looking at four more terms of school (another
year) just to cover those. Now, I have four other courses I need to take. Only those eight courses will be paid for by my grants and only if I'm enrolled full time. The remaining eight courses I need are:
➤ Intro to Public Speaking (GEC communications requirement)
➤ Elementary Algebra (remedial math course #1)
➤ Intermediate Algebra (remedial math course #2)
➤ College Algebra or Math for Liberal Arts Majors I (GEC math requirement)
➤ College Geometry or Math for Liberal Arts Majors II (GEC math requirement)
➤ Intro to Astronomy or Intro to Geology (GEC natural science requirement)
➤ Intro to Theatre (GEC humanities requirement)
➤ Intro to Religion (GEC humanities requirement)
For the Fall term I'm currently scheduled for Elementary Algebra, Intro to Public Speaking, Intro to Theatre, and a foreign language course. I now have to wait until the 10th when fees are due for people to be bumped out of the sciences courses I'm looking at in the right time slot to ensure (a) my grant will pay for the course since I didn't take a loan and (b) I actually am enrolled full-time to receive the grant. This basically means I'm going to have two courses next term for which my grant money will pay. And then only one class for the following two terms. All my glee about getting a lot of grant money is suddenly gone since I'm going to either have to cut to half-time (which would affect my grants) or take out loans again.
Though, with such a large amount of my grant money going unused, I might be able to drop to half time and still get enough to cover my educational expenses. It's far too late for me to be thinking about these things and after the awesomely bad day I had, it's just giving me a headache. /sigh
In an unrelated note: several of my icons aren't displaying properly. That's just peachy LJ. If it's not one simple fucking thing, it's another. DreamWidth is looking more and more appealing as a permanent home for my infrequent complaining about boring shit no-one cares about every day.
