Linting improvements

Currently disabling linter warnings, trimming attributes may be wise e.g. file_prefix and target should typically be the same variable

Some linter warnings may be irrelevant to this project, and these specific warnings should be removed as unhelpful. These decisions should be documented and added to the .pylintrc.
